Now Playing: GameSpot's Best Of The Year 2017 - #8: Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice is a game that forces you out of your comfort zone, and for all the right reasons. Presenting a troubled young woman's tempestuous journey of self-discovery and redemption through her eyes, developer Ninja Theory's "indie-AAA" experiment takes a lot of risks when telling its harrowing, introspective story about the often lonely struggles of suffering from past trauma.

In doing so, Hellblade offers one of the year's most subversive narrative-driven action-adventure games, serving as a window into the challenging experience of living with a mental illness. If there's one sentiment that it conveys, it's empathy.

On her journey through a long-abandoned Nordic land, a Pict warrior named Senua is confronted with relics from her past--both corporeal and spiritual. As she explores the region and learns of its history, she experiences visions that recall the warmth from lost loved ones, while also reflecting on the darker aspects of her guilt-ridden past. As she solves perspective-bending puzzles, and fights with feral tribesmen, Senua is pushed to her mental and physical limits.

No Caption Provided

Ninja Theory's talent for detailed performance capture and inventive visuals are put to great use in Hellblade. Many story interludes feature live actors and these moments blend in with the in-game visuals in a way that illustrates a surreal quality to Senua's skewed, and often turbulent perspective. This is especially apparent in Hellblade's brilliant sound design with the use of binaural audio (audio recorded with two mics, creating a 3D audio effect). Senua's conflicting inner-voices plant seeds of doubt into herself--and you in turn--jumping between tones of mockery for struggling to overcome obstacles, to a voice of reassurance when Senua feels vulnerable.

Finding out what's truly real isn't the end goal in Hellblade. The tangible and metaphysical aspects of Senua's perspective are all shaped by her unique psychosis--presenting a world where reality and her visions are one and the same. In doing so, Hellblade firmly presents itself as a game that respects its lead character and her experiences, while also expressing empathy for the complexity of mental illness.

In Ninja Theory's harrowing action-adventure, it isn't so much about helping its lead character overcome her demons and cure her of her troubles--but rather, it's about seeing her accept these issues as a part of who she is. In the eternal and ever-human challenge of coming to grips with who you are, Hellblade shows us--through the lasting connections Senua has with her loved ones--that you are not alone in the struggle. By its conclusion, Ninja Theory's spellbinding jaunt through a troubled young woman's experience ultimately proves to be one of the most heartfelt and uplifting experiences of the year.

When games like Nier and Hellblade are at the bottom of the top 10 list you know gaming has been good this year :P . So many good games.

my favourite platform (PC) is getting less and less relevant games. I mean, it has more quantity with the biggest exclusives library, but nothing relevant, all based on f2p, mobas and the recent battle royale hypetrain. Wich is sad as "my platform" used to be the most important in videogames scene imo. This year best games were mostly console exclusives. Yeah I´m not that fanboy to ignore it. My top 10 list:

1- Zelda BOTW (Nintendo switch) * Exclusive

2- Mario Odyssey (Nintendo switch) * Exclusive

3- Persona 5 (PlayStation 4) * Exclusive

4- Horizon Zero Dawn (PlayStation 4) * Exclusive

5- Evil Within 2 (PS4,PC,Xbox)

6- Nioh (PS4,PC)

7- Northgard (PC) * Exclusive

8- Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (Nintendo Switch) * Exclusive

9- Sonic Mania (PS4,PC,Xbox,NSwitch)

10- Gravity Rush 2 (PlayStation 4) *Exclusive

I hope we get a 2018 as good as 2017, wich was superb! And I hope PC gets relevant exclusives again... missing the old Quake/DukeNukem/MDK/Black&White days when PC had exclusives pushing the boundaries... sick of this early access/indie/f2p/moba scene.

@manu_pt: I dont understand your definition of relevant, you arent making any sense. For example PUGB is the biggest game right now on any platform by far and it isnt just a fad, theres an xbox version but its dog shit on console. You are also completely ignoring Divinity Original Sin 2 and Total War: Warhammer 2. The lineup this year on pc was amazing, I dont care if a lot of the games were on one console or the other... I just care about the line up on pc.

@TerrorRizzing: @PCGameboy this has turned on a platform war by that user "PCGameboy". I never said consoles were better than PC in every department. People can´t respect other opinions because of the plastic box where they play videogames. Actually I´ve seen this guy PCgameboy on most Digital Foundry videos always spreading a hate towards playstation4 and Xbox. If you want a friendly advice, try to find something useful to do with your life. I don´t think spending all day on gamespot, youtube or forums arguing that PC is the best will make any good for your life goals pal. Remember my words. Don´t end up being depressed at home wasting the time of your life on such subjects. Is useless. But you do what you want with your life, I will just quit from this conversation because it is going nowhere. I´m not a fanboy of anything, I have all platforms and I like all of them, just spoke about a personal opinion that´s all. PC is less relevant right now TO ME. If might not be to you and I respect it 100%, but no platform wars please, won´t go on that. Cya.

@TerrorRizzing: While i do like some of those games mentioned, PC has tons of excellent exclusives that can be argued to be up there as well like Divinity Original Sin 2, Total Warhammer 2, and more. Relevant is subjective, so i don't even know why you use the word. PC is bigger than ever before, and is growing rapidly, the only reason to even buy a console imo is for their exclusives, but then again PC has all XBox exclusives, and P3&4 exclusives through PSNow, and tons of PS4 console exclusives like Nioh, Neir, Ni No Kuni 2, and a lot more.

The biggest most diverse library of games, free online, cheaper games, more devices to use, open platform for full control of experiences whether it be through hardware or software, graphic options, control options, more competitive with Esports, and not controlled by one company where everything comes down to them, or the developers, but instead you get to choose your own experience, and many different services to buy games form.

PC gaming hardware market is worth 30 billion far more than the consoles, it earned 442% more software revenue than consoles in 2016, Steam surpassed its record with most concurrent users at 17 million, and surpassed XBL monthly concurrent users months ago, and most likely passed PSN by now. The platform look to get even bigger with Volta coming out next year, and games form even Japan now coming onto PC looks to broaden the library even more. No consoles has as much of diverse genres of games as PC. Sorry, if you are arguing that PC gaming id dying, or isn't relevant, you couldn't be more wrong. It's more relevant than it has ever been.

@pcgameboy: Ahahah you dont play the best PS4 exclusives on ps now, not even in your dreams dude. you have killzone and knack, congratulations ahah what a liar you are kid. pure fanboy xD

you talk like pc does everything that we do on a console ps4 ahah damage control much. all you play are the reskinned multiplats, while a console user plays all of those aswell plus the exclusives. Uncharted 4, The last Guardian, Lost Legacy, ghost of tsushima, God of War, Day´s Gone, Detroit, Kingdom Hearts 3, GT Sport, Persona 5, Horizon Zero Dawn, Red Dead Redemption 2, Super Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade, Zelda BOTW, Kirby, Spider Man, Detroit, Yakuza 0 and Yakuza 6, Yoshi, Bayonetta, Gravity Rush 2, The last of us 2 etc etc etc etc!!! enjoy your Wildlands or your call of duty on PC! no one cares! just don lie and pretend you play everything that is relevant on pc because that is simply false ahah yoiur platform is based on league of legends, dota, cs and pubg. the best triple a exclusives are on consoles not pc. pc only has the multiplats., thats not enough to me sorry. Mr Fanboy :D

@castlewhisper: Only fanboy here is you.. You clearly don't know jack about PC.. They add more games to PSNow every month, and we can get exclusives added at any moment. We do have tons of PS3 exlcusives as well like Uncharted 1-3, Infamous 1&2, Killzones, Sly Ratchet, Last of Us, and tons more..

The PC does do everything the PS4 does, and better.. The ONLY thing you can argue for the PS4 is the few exclusives that PC doesn't have which i can do the same for PC. Your whole argument proves that without exclusives, the consoles would be worthless, which is true.. Well except maybe the Switch since you can take games anywhere..

Reskinned? We get the BEST multiplatform versions of games, higher quality, ACTUAL native 4K unlike most games for Xbox X, higher framerates than 30fps (which 99% of XBX, and PS4Pro games are), mods support for those games. If that counts as "reskinned", then i totally prefer those versions. lol

Here are some exlcusives:

Starcraft series, World of Warcraft, TotalWarhammer series, Dawn of War series, Age of Empires series, Quake Champions, Civilization series, Heroes of Storm, LoL, Dota 2, Guild Wars 2, Penumbra, Planet Coaster, S.T.A.L.K.E.R series, System Shock 2 (and Remake), older Xcom series than Enemy Within, Wildstar, RollerCoaster Typhoon series, Company of Heroes, Shogun 2, Routine, and many, many more. Indies adds even more.

There are tons of high rated exclusives on PC as well, just because you aren't into them doesn't mean they aren't good, or that nobody plays them..

I mean on the PS4 good luck playing all older titles from last gen without PSNow, and even then the selection isn't that big.. Let's be real here, PC is bigger than ever, and if you think power is the only thing that PC has over console you are wrong.

1. Cheaper games.

2. Much bigger and more diverse library of genres/games. (and better backward compatibility)

3. More options for graphics/controller/input devices.

4. More mod support

5. Total customization for both software, and hardware.

6. Better framerates, and control over it.

7. FREE online.

8. More productivity tools for work, and video/audio design

9. Ability to self repair hardware/software

10, Better streaming software.

11 More choices over where to play games, or who to buy games from.

12. And most importantly of all the ability to not be in a closed ecosystem where everything is up to one company, and the developers.. We get to choose our own experience, while you get stuck with whatever Microsoft wants on Xbox.. Sure we have Windows 10, but with gaming we have total control. Battlefield 1 is not getting enhanced on Xbox X.. We don't have these kind of problems..

Cheating is on all platforms, though PC is worse but getting better with perma bans being implemented in games. Competitive gaming is mostly all on PC, with Esports the majority of the time on a PC. The only thing i can give the consoles is easy plug in and play, and size.... Yeah... thats about it... A PC can be as cheaper, and as expensive as you want it to be.. While on consoles you are stuck with 2 choices.. Honestly without exclusives, there would be no reason to buy one, except for casual gamers who can't do something as simple as building a PC.

@pcgameboy: As I write this I just read PS4 beat every records this november holiday on US, the most sold console ever in 1 month period. Also I just read PC market is going down and less pc hardware was sold this year, same with computers. There is the link, remove the spaces:

notebookcheck . net/PC-market-expected-to-drop-2-7-percent-by-year-s-end. 267526. 0 . html

PC is dropping, the only thing that keeps PC numbers is China, because they can´t buy consoles, PC is all they have. If they could buy consoles pc numbers would be even worse. Most pc gamers are laptop users that play league of legends or dota, and that´s all. Enjoy your warhammer and dota while we play red dead redemption 2 and the last of us 2. Fanboy and liar you are. Triggered as f, the most insecure kid on the web.

@castlewhisper: That is not the PC gaming hardware market, that is the normal hardware PC market, non-PC gaming hardware market has been dropping, but Gaming PC hardware market is worth 30 billion, FAR more than the console market.

http://www.pcgamer.com/pc-gaming-hardware-market-breaches-30-billion-for-the-first-time/

PC gaming is far more than just from China, its massive even without the, but its not like China somehow doesn't count as gamers. lol Still bigger either way. You ignore all the other points i made as well. PC gaming is bigger than consoles, and is growing, with Volta coming next year it will be even bigger.

Red Dead Redemption 2 will come to PC, GTAV sold insane nukmbers on PC and is still one of the most played games on Steam, unless Rockstar hates money, they will release it on PC, so thinking that is just silly. I will enjoy my Total Warhammer, and many other exclusives i mentioned. Not insecure, or "triggered", just pointing out your terrible arguments.

@pcgameboy: games are cheaper on console nowadays due to allkeyshop and grey market and PSN sales. Also ps now is a junk, it doesnt have new games added, all lies. ps now isnt even possible on many countries on europe. It only has the old ps4 exclusives and not all of them. You only mentioned strategy games, thats all you have on your irrelevant platform. playing league of legends and cs go all day just like steamstats tell us. Always the same games. You dont get any award winning AAA game, only ubisoft crap. We dont care about those games. have fun with your nerd platform ahah

@pcgameboy: Wow you went full PC elitist fanboy over there pal! I don´t have patience for that sorry! I never said PC was bad, I even said it had the biggest library and the best possibilities! But you treating PC like it had everything a console has and thats is simply NOT TRUE. Not right now in 2017 pal. Consoles were never as relevant as they are right now! But I will leave it at this. No way I´m gonna be on such "platform war". Whatever pal

@pcgameboy: You didn´t state any facts bud, you forced stuff to go on your way. Your speech means PC can do anything the new consoles can, and that is completly false. It may have been right in the last 10 years as the PS3/Xbox360 generation was prolly one of the worst for the consoles with few relevant exclusives. But the game changed. You can check the PS4 sale numbers beating every videogames historical records, and there is a reason for that. The reason is games. PS4 is the console with the biggest exclusives library ever in its lie cycle. 119 exclusives in 4 years is completly madness. Not even gameboy and Genesis had that.

But you will keep saying you play all of them on PSnow or steam anyway... and as I said I don´t like platform wars, specifically with the guys from my platform (PC). They are the most difficult ones to discuss with. And btw I´ve seen you on many digital foundry videos saying the same thing over and over wich means you are insecure about something. You don´t get my respect sorry. You can say what you want, I love PCs more than anything since Commodore Amiga (yes I´m old), but console gaming was never as relevant as it is right now on 2017. Anyone denying that, knows little about gaming. Now I´m defo out of this debate. Good luck trying to be secure on 2018 as so many console exclusives will be released. I guess you will freak out and spam more on DF videos and gamespot trying to convince everyone that you play all those titles on PC.

PC is great, is the best platform, but it doesn´t offer all the experiences a true gamer wants in 2017/2018. This is being objective.

@manu_pt: The PC gaming hardware market is worth 30 billion, it completely dwarfs the console market.. By a lot.. https://www.tweaktown.com/news/55607/pc-generated-442-more-revenue-consoles-2016/index.html

The PS4 does have some exclusives, but many of those in the list are indie games too, which when comparing exclusives with indie on PC, it dwarfs it their too. Yes, the PS4 is selling well, but its not putting a dent in PC gaming.. The only thing you can even talk about is exclusives, when PC is better in many ways than just power. I will just copy/paste what i sent above.

Here are just a few of the many exclusives on PC since you keep acting like it doesn't have any..

Yes consoles are relevant, but they aren't more relevant than PC... I can list tons of reasons besides power that make people move to PC.. It has exclusives too that console players miss out on.. If you like PS4 thats fine too, but trying to act as if PC isn't relevant is just silly.

@TerrorRizzing: Pubg success is also due to China.. they can´t use consoles there, they can´t play battlefield and their call of duty is a modified version of the old call of duty, with modded maps and weapons from black ops, modern warfare etc.

All Chinese people can do is play PC and of course Pubg was a massive hit there. According to steamstats 66,4% of PubG sales are from China. That explains a lot.

Also by relevant, I meant exactly what Castle said. Games that use your hardware potential to the max! When Quake was out on 1996 I had to buy a new vodoo GFX. When Crysis was out in 2007 I had to buy a new Nvidia GT8. In the past PC had a LOT of exclusives that would never work on any console and that really pushed the boundaries and made it to Goty awards. Now everyone loves Minecraft, League of Legends or Black Squad. That kind of games don´t appeal to me, being honest. Is just my opinion. I compare those games to mobile android gaming. Fast food massively online played and loads of micro transactions. That´s not what I want PC to become, altho it is already, sadly.

Had hopes on Star Citizen but seems they won´t go anywhere, now with Crytek suing them aswell..

@manu_pt: what are you going on about, there are consoles in China and its not that hard to get crappy games like call of duty... there just isnt that much interest in games like that. Weve also seen that pubg doesnt work very well on console at all. Crysis never had the impact of something like Diablo, World of Warcraft, Wolfenstein, half life, counter strike, league of legends, Baldurs Gate, Command And Conquer, Everquest etc... just stop.

@TerrorRizzing: Ok pal, as I still couldn´t explain myself in a way that you understand, we will do this in a different way:

Tell me how many triple A PC exclusives released in 2017 that use advanced 3d engines with the lastest available technologies and features that we can find on a GTX1070/GTX1080/GTX1080ti, from Async to DX12, volumetric lightning, 4k native textures, 4k assetts and Dynamic diopetry. Then go back to 2016 and tell me how many once again. And tell me how many are planned for 2018, apart from Star Citizen wich sadly won´t make it to full version and got sued today by Crytek anyway (I have a lot of money on that game :( )

You will notice that you can´t name a single one or maybe you have a bit more knowledge than me on the matter and you can find 1 or 2... wich are not relevant because if they were I would know them for sure. And that´s when you will realize and understand my point of view!

Note: Divinity is an AMAZING game. Not on my top10 but that´s personal opinion, nothing else. Is still amazing but northgard is better to me. And my opinion about the lack of triple A PC exclusives still applies.

@manu_pt: why would they have to do that for a game to be relevant? The average pc gamer has something like a 1050ti, that's what they have to target. The masses have voted with their wallets, they dont want to spend hundreds of dollars every year upgrading. This is how PC gaming ended up on a huge downturn when they tried to create that trend.

@TerrorRizzing: China doesn´t allow consoles..... I guess you live on denial. And will you keep talking about warcraft and diablo etc? Please just stop, we talked about games that push PC limits. Not strategy or moba games that anyone can play on a laptop dude. You clearly didn´t get the idea I guess. No one is talking about that kind of games, Pc always had them thankfully. We talking about the other type of exclusive games that PC simply lacks now.

@TerrorRizzing: Dinity 1 was way better than the 2nd one. Warhammer seriously? How many more warhammers? lmao. Pubg is a big hit yes, but I guess is not for everyone, I personally hate it. And is still a demo. Also it doesn´t push the hardware boundaries of anything wich I think manu supposed to refer. When he talked about crysis, quake, etc. When those games released in that stime they put a lot of work on the most demanding graphics cards. Pubg is an unoptimizaed piece of crap, doesn´t push the boundaries of anything.

I totally agree with him. 99% of PC exclusives now are f2p, mobas or shooters running on light engines as the valve one. And that´s bad. Really bad.

@castlewhisper: Divinity 1 is better than the second one??? Well congrats you are one of the 0.000000001% of people that think that. lol It didn't even score as well with critics as the second one. Doesn't matter how many Warhammers there are, Total Warhammer 2 sold, and scored very well. lol You are a terrible troll.

@pcgameboy:

Divinity 2 is nothing special, turn based rpg just like many others. Chrono Trigger from SNES rapes divinity in all ways. Also Divinity is not an exclusive, the first one released on PS4 aswell and the second one has release date for 12th January 2018 on PSN. Is irrelevant to talk about that game, I don´t consider timed exclusives as exclusives.

Anyway, warhammer and divinity are games that run on a laptop. You didn´t get the idea still, so I give up.

@castlewhisper: sounds like you are just trolling. PC gaming isn't about trying to push hardware as far as it can go (almost nobody even had a video card when quake came out), its about an open platform where big hits just drop out of nowhere. Total War: Warhammer 2 and Divinity original sin 2 are both fantastic games.

Game was incredible! Amazing acting, narrative, and sound design. Combat could of been better, but it was really well done, and proved you don't need big AAA $60 games for a AAA experience Melina Juergens did a fantastic job even though she was never an actor, but a designer. Very impressed.

GOTY should partially take in account gamers choices or its not GOTY at all, it used to be like that. The way you do it now only distances yourselves from gamers in my opinion.

@Godlikan: except the people most invested in "GOTY" will just vote for a single player story driven game on a Sony console.

This was a game that I got this year that I didn't get with much excitement, but I really enjoyed it. I know people mostly applaud its theme and how it executed it, but I really liked the gameplay aspect of it and where the game brings you in terms of setting. Yes, it is linear, but it had more variety than I expected. I played it after it was revealed that 'it's not really permadeath', but I was still worried about dying.

@Welverin: exactly. linear games kick open-world games' butt in terms of tension and gameplay. i always prefer a linear game over an open-world game, it's just a better quality in my opinion.

the last real open-world games i played were Witcher Wild Hunt and Horizon and while both were good, tension in these games fades quickly and is only apparant in certain missions. and they both have very tedious elements like worthless collectibles. those games also have very little replayability, because once you restart you get that feeling of "i have to do all that again? no thanks". i knew before buying Horizon that it is probably not for me, yet i had vacation time and one week before Hellblade was released :)

@Welverin: I didn't really use it as a way of saying it's a caveat. It was more like, 'people say it's linear, but'. If I really thought it being linear was an issue, I'd say that. That said, there are games that are too linear. Ryse and The Order come to mind despite their environments being decent, so I wish I could explore more of it.

Then there are games that show you an environment but limit you as to where you can go, like Battlefield games (although Battlefield 1 alleviated that a bit), Call of Duty Advanced Warfighter, and I hear the recent Battlefront does it too.

Where a game shows you a place, and yet tells you to go back to the mission or else you fail if you walk toward it. Your comment tells me that you're more into story-focused linear games rather than the myriad of open world games that keep coming out.

Maybe I'm just reading too much into it, but either way, you did misunderstand my comment, granted I was being pretty vague.

@NTM23: Just saying something like "Yes, it is linear, but" implies they're inferior, whether that's your intent or not.

There are enough people who believe that those of us who don't shouldn't be giving it credence in any fashion.

To your later point I enjoy both styles of games, but for years now there's been a growing trend of non-linear games being perceived as superior, those replacing linear games entirely would be bad.

@Welverin: Well, now you know, I wasn't calling them inferior. Most of my favorite games are linear. I don't have an issue with it, but I've heard people complain about it being linear, so I was saying, to one's issue with it, there's variety that makes up for it if linearity is an issue to you. I was implying that some may not like the linearity of it but there are things that make up for it, not referring to myself.

Everyone has their own opinions. I don't feel like that was a huge thing to delve into detail about though so I didn't, so yes I can see why you have that assumption. Also, yes, by your comment I gathered what you were saying. Anyway, you don't need to respond to this, I just wanted to be clear. I don't have an issue with linearity, but realistically, some do.

I should say, I'm not really concerned with open world vs. linear games though, I just want good single player games. I don't want more and more games to just become online focused. When it comes to open world and linear, both can be great and both can be bad. Most of my favorite games are linear, but at least three open world games do make it in the list of what I'd consider favorite (granted, I have a large list of favorite games).

@NTM23:I must say that the first 2 quests towards the bosses are a bit 'boring'. Right until you understand the puzzles and the sidestories. Once you've defeated the boss it gets so much more exciting. The story is so intriguing, the darkness reminded me even of dahaka at some point in prince of persia. And after you've played the story there is still room for curiosity. You have your own thoughts about the story yet you don't know what really happened. Storyline = Great, Combat = Great, Puzzles = good but hard yet i think we do not remember how hard games used to be. I love to see hellblade made it on the list!

This list seem to contain games nobody will remember next year. I played Nier earlier this year, for example, and had already forgotten about that drab and dull game had not GS brought it up on their list.... Most memorable games? Tsk.

@henrythefifth: "Best" doesn't always equate to "memorable." We have had plenty of great stuff that are most likely under the rubble of Pompeii now.

I don't understand how Hellblade got 8th spot with a score of 8 over Nier Automata( Gamespot awarded it a 9).

@realityshift:

Review Scores: 1 person. That's why they don't matter.

This stuff: The entire GS editorial team, most likely.

A good game, but a great cinematic experience. I wish the gameplay was a bit tighter and not as repetitive. But the combat was satisfying, though perhaps a bit on the easy side. Some of the puzzle bits did get repetitive after a while and they did drag on a bit, but overall I was very pleased with this game.

It is the story and the representation of mental illness that makes this one of the games I will definitely remember for a long time. I know it does not portray how it is like for someone with mental illness 100% correctly, but it gives you a hint on how it can be like to suffer from it. The confusion, the constant voices whispering in your ear and the sheer madness of it all. Combine that with a truly dark and somber take on Norse mythology and some of the best acting in a game ever and you get a story like no other.

This game is why I love linear story focused single player games, no other medium can immersive you in a story like such games. Is it my favorite game of the year? no probably not. But it is on my list for sure.
