Gamescom: Nintendo Switch Gets Surprise Hotline Miami Collection Release Today

Nintendo's Switch has become an indie game powerhouse and, today, a couple of the best action games in recent memory will be available for the console and handheld hybrid. Hotline Miami and Hotline Miami 2 are both playable on Switch today, August 19, packed together as Hotline Miami Collection. The news was revealed during Gamescom, as part of Nintendo's indie showcase stream.

The Collection was previously available for PS4 and PC, but this marks the first time that Hotline Miami and its sequel, Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, have been available on a Nintendo platform. Another beloved indie game, Superhot, also releases on Switch today.

Developed by Dennaton Games and published by Devolver Digital, Hotline Miami was first released in 2012 and garnered widespread praise for its high-octane action, a fantastic soundtrack, and its satisfying gameplay. It tasked players with battling through a series off kill rooms, where a single stray bullet or opportunistic punch would result in death. Because of the fragility of the main character, it felt more like a puzzle game where the player was using their weapons, environmental objects, and considered movements to stay alive.

In GameSpot's Hotline Miami review Danny O'Dwyer described it as "a discotheque of death that's very hard to walk away from, and a fantastic twitch shooter with a confident sense of style."

Its sequel followed in 2015 and was also well received. "In almost every way, Hotline Miami 2 is a marked improvement on an already tremendous formula," O'Dwyer said in the review. "This is a game that had me pumping my fists and laughing with joy throughout my time with it, and I was left despondent by the time it drew to a close. A gutsy, refined game that isn't scared to force you into corners and watch you battle out of them, as well as an audiovisual joy that marries graphics, music, and gameplay so well that even the pause screen is a work of art."
