The long-awaited PlayStation TV device will make its debut in North America on October 14, Sony announced at Gamescom today. It will launch in PAL territories on November 14.

Sony revealed the PAL date during its Gamescom press conference, while the North American date came shortly thereafter on Twitter. The company revealed buyers will receive three free digital games, but didn't specify which games these will be. We also don't know if North American buyers will be entitled to the same deal; we've followed up with Sony and will report back with anything we learn.

PlayStation TV is the former Vita TV, which launched in Japan last year. (You can see an unboxing video of one below.) The device can play "many" PlayStation Vita games in addition to digital PlayStation 1 and PlayStation Portable games. Through Remote Play, it can be used to stream PlayStation 4 games from one PS4 console in your home onto a separate television that the PlayStation TV is connected to. The device also provides access to certain entertainment content through the PlayStation Network, and will be getting support for the PlayStation Now streaming service.

Both the PS3's DualShock 3 and PS4's DualShock 4 can be used with the PlayStation TV, which will, as announced at E3, retail for $100 in the US and €99 in Europe. A bundle that includes a DualShock 3, an 8GB memory card, a USB cable, and a copy of The Lego Movie Videogame will also be available for $140.

If you're interested in the PlayStation TV, which aspect of it are you most looking forward to using? Let us know in the comments.

My office monitor just made a new preorder friend.

This is so much better than an android micro console to me.

My big question is can you take it to a hotel and connect to the internet and remote play from there? On business trips that would be my biggest concern... I currently do this with the Vita but if I can take this with me connect it to my hotel TV... I would by day one.

<< LINK REMOVED >> On Amazon, the description specifically mentions local wi-fi but seeing as PlayStation TV is a glorified Vita, I would think so. At any rate, I hope so - I don't mind a bit of latency if I can get a virtual second PS4 for $100

Can you play every game that you buy off PSN on there?

So essentially I get a another ps4 to use in my house. Awesome. I hope by "certain entertainment content" they mean netflix, Hulu, blurays etc. I can get rid of the Blu Ray player in my bedroom.

Frankly, just like the Wii U, I have no idea what the heck is this PS TV. Is it a TV or is it a console?

This thing isn't going to do well. Not in the U.S. anyway. I will purchase one to be able to play "most" Vita games on my TV. The only thing I can picture myself using it for.

Avatar image for lrdfancypants

Why? This is so much better than the other micro consoles out today?

Android games that don't work well with controller or vita games, ps4 stream, ps now ( if sub is made it will make this awesome ), netflix, hulu, rent movies, music unlimited.

This blows all the micro consoles on market away IMO and in the case of overall ecosystem stretches sony farther entrenched.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I will probably get one as I have some very specific uses for it, although it may not see heavy use. Yes overall I admit most people probably won't be interested. I might wait for a sale though, unless there is a free games offer that is good.

If Sony improves their selection of apps outside the US, I would be interested.

now if they combined this and the non local co-op , so that two people in the same house can play on separate TVs I would be all in

<< LINK REMOVED >> i wish it could do what your saying plus add in the share play feature, so i could buy one , hook it up to second tv in my house, and invite my wife to join me in a multiplayer bf4 game..... man that would be an awesome thing, im not buying two consoles and two games just for that. not gonna happen.

Avatar image for drd7of14

@alldaelong It's still going to be splitscreen with the PS4, if locally it has splitscreen. It just allows you to do whatever you can do locally, over the network(internet) with a PS4 connecting to another PS4. It's awesome! But it doesn't seem to be unlike Remote Play with the VITA. If they say otherwise, then awesome!

This is speculation of course, but if they didn't have splitscreen for certain games, then how would they effectively do it? Maybe if developers patched in changes to the display, so that you see only your screen. But the limitations of performance would still be effected. The connected PS4 isn't processing the game, just the PS4 that is running the game. If this is done differently, I will be surprised.

Still awesome! But a PS TV wouldn't be able to do this unless PS NOW was streaming PS4 games, which would multiply the lag drastically. And I doubt it, cause NOW lets you access specific games, not access a PS4's features entirely. In the sense of Remote Play, the Playstation TV already does this, and so does the VITA.

Just don't know how they could do it with separate T.V.s, without duplicating the image no matter what. Also, I assume only one PS4 could connect at once, but MAYBE multiple users from one PS4 can log into another PS4. And that is a big Maybe. I doubt it.

MIGHT be interested. I like that it can play Vita, PSP, and digital PS1 titles. $100 is a good price.

Hmm, too bad it isn't going to be powerful to run PS2 games as well (otherwise I don't know why they would not mention them). But, I guess I can play those on the PS3 anyway.

Avatar image for drd7of14
drd7of14

<< LINK REMOVED >> I think it is powerful enough, just not supported. I wouldn't be surprised if the VITA/PS TV got PS2 classic support, of the limited selection they currently have, in the future.

It would be great if I could insert my old Playstation game discs, not so that they can be run and played by the system but so that Sony can see that I own them. That way if the game is in their online store I should be able to download it for free.

Avatar image for RicanV

<< LINK REMOVED >> That's a great idea. Inserting a disc just to check the license. It's a shame that this generation isn't backwards compatible physically.

<< LINK REMOVED >> You don't download Now games. You just stream them.

Something like what you said could be exploited into making Sony give people free games. Not only that, streaming is expensive in itself, so they would gain nothing from you having a free game.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> it's Both, before the name change Vita TV, runs on the same Architecture as Vita, which is why Sony said, you can download and play. PS1 PSP and Vita games on the device, and you can stream PS4 games as well..

It's basically a Vita that connects to your TV,

Avatar image for spacecadet25

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Good point, but I hate the loss of backwards compatibility for games I already own. I won't consider buying them again unless they are like $1 to $3 dollars.

Avatar image for Staranime010

<< LINK REMOVED >>, Sony already said you can download digital Vita games on PlayStation TV , which means you can own them. besides that the device itself runs on the same Architecture as Vita.

That's why, it was called Vita TV in Japan

Avatar image for spacecadet25

Hmm, the name of the product is sure confusing, I thought this was a device that streams television programs or has a t.v. service, not a way to play Vita games on t.v. They should have kept the "Vita TV" name intact, at least that name told you what the product was.

Avatar image for elheber

<< LINK REMOVED >> It wirelessly streams from your PS4, so that you could run one PS4 for two TVs in separate rooms of your house. It also plays select Vita games, PSP, PS3, PS2, and PS1 games via PlayStation Now.

Avatar image for drd7of14

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Yeah, that is a mistaken inclusion. They did say in the way past, that they planned on having Playstation Now support select PS3/PS2/PS1 games, but we have only thus far seen PS3 games during the Beta. Although, performance-wise, if it can handle PS3 games, I'm pretty sure PS2/PS1 games will be easy. They should also consider PSP games into the mix.
