GameFly Introduces New Subscription Plans, Including A Movies-Only Option
The mail-order video game and movie rental service now has budget plans and a new Elite tier membership.
GameFly is evolving in 2021 to offer more subscription plans for both video games and 4K Blu-rays. In addition to the standard subscription--which is still the same price--GameFly has now added Budget and Elite tiers as well as a plan dedicated to movies. The new subscription plans are live now, and you can still get a free 30-day trial to see if you like the service before committing. GameFly offers game rentals for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch as well as PS4 and Xbox One. Here's a quick overview of the new plan options:
- Budget: $8.95 per month, rent one disc at a time, excludes new releases
- Elite: $29.95 per month, rent two discs at a time, includes new releases and 4K Blu-rays
- Movies-only: Four subscription plans ranging from $8.95 to $18.95 per month
The Budget plan is cost-effective at $8.95 per month ($5/month for the first three months), but it does come with a couple of significant limitations. With the Budget plan, you won't have access to new games until four months after release and movie rentals are limited to DVD and standard Blu-ray. The Budget plan also only allows you to rent one game/movie at a time.
The Elite plan is quite pricey at $29.95 per month ($18/month for the first three months), but it gives you by far the most flexibility and options. By default, the Elite plan lets you rent two games/movies at a time, including brand-new game releases and 4K Blu-rays. You can lock in your reservations a week in advance for new releases, as opposed to the six-week requirement for the standard plan. The Elite plan also grants 24-hour early access to GameFly sales. Last year, we saw numerous very good sales on pre-owned games at GameFly, so this is a decent perk.
Movies-only subscription plans are available at four different pricing tiers. The standard one-disc rental membership costs $8.95 per month ($5/month for the first three months) and includes brand-new releases but is limited to standard Blu-rays and DVDs. The Elite one-disc plan is $13.95 per month ($8/month the first three months) and adds 4K Blu-ray rentals. The two-disc standard and Elite plans have the same perks as the one-disc memberships but at a higher cost: $13.95 per month for standard and $18.95 per month for Elite.
With some new games priced at $70 this generation, GameFly may be a viable option for some, especially when it comes to new releases for PS5 and Xbox Series X.
