Game That Draws Real Blood Suspended by Kickstarter

"Blood Sport," a system where taking in-game damage draws real-world blood, gets shut down by Kickstarter.

When you lose blood in the game, you also lose it in real life. That's the concept for Blood Sport, a new gaming project that was seeking funds on Kickstarter before the crowdfunding site suspended it.

The concept is relatively simple. Every time your character took damage in a game, any game, the system would draw blood into a sterilized donation bag similar to the standard blood bank experience.

Here's how it works. When you take damage in a game like Call of Duty, the controller rumbles. All Blood Sport's creators did was re-route this signal, using an Arduino Board, to determine how much blood is drawn. The process would stop when you reach the set blood donation quantity.

The system factors in your age, weight, and preexisting medical conditions, too.

Blood Sport's creators were hoping to take the system across Canada, with gaming gatherings that effectively double as blood donation events.

"We are simply creating the gaming hardware that will allow us to get gamers thinking about more important issues while still doing what they love," the team said. "From there, we'll partner with the appropriate organizations in both the gaming and medical communities to bring it all to life."

Blood Sport was aiming to begin a tour of Canada on March 17, timed with the release of Battlefield Hardline in an effort to drum up hype. The project's creators were also hoping to get celebrities such as PewDiePie, Seth Rogen, Snoop Dog, and Conan O'Brien to play Blood Sport.

The project was created by just two people, Taran Chadha and Jamie Umpherson, who are working on Blood Sport in their spare time.

In terms of safety, the Blood Sport team says all tests were conducted alongside medical professionals. And while Blood Sport's system should know when to stop drawing blood, in the event that there is a problem, a medical technician standing by would step in, the creators say.

It is unclear why Blood Sport, which launched on Kickstarter November 18 and gathered close to CA$4,000 ($3,500) of its CA$250,000 goal, was suspended just this week. The game's creators could not be reached, and a Kickstarter represented declined to comment when approached by CNET.

We'll continue to monitor this story as it unfolds.

Despite being just about the most retarded thing I've ever seen in gaming, it'll eventually get made and there will be a steady supply of idiots willing to try it out.

This is precisely what Darwin was on about ...

I understand where they are coming from, basically trying to make blood donation a more intersting experience by having interaction. But when you win by donating LESS blood and try to make other people donate MORE than you... Well then the morals are a bit off. You should win by donating blood the fastest or whatever.

And to imagine I was ever worried about letting friends use my game controllers because they might have sticky lemonade and chips hands... when swapping these bloodsport controllers might actually give you AIDS!

It sounds like it would run afoul of FDA requirements for medical device approval. That'd be one reason why Kickstarter would remove the funding page...

Not to sure if this is a good idea, i think more people would donate blood this way, but high levels of adreneline, and iregular spouts of blood lol im not if thats the right way to take blood? Um also the main problem which is what if thie device gets in the wrong hands? You can see it now at parties people going to far playing mk etc drinking and before you know it some idiot has died and the games will be blamed, we all know that would probably happen.

When I read the title, I imagined a game that would cut you when you take damage in-game. Admittedly, I was disappointed when I read how it actually works.

If you participate in this "game", you don't want to donate your own blood. Instead, you want to make other people to lose theirs.

That's wrong and promoting violence.

omg, i can't take these comments seriously, because it feels like inly half the people read the whole article head-to-toe, or at least don't get it. It's a blood-drive thing; no "lol rest in pieces noobs" or "omg what if sum1 dies" or whatever. I'm interpreting it as: putting "blood donating" and "fun" together, with some "what if-". Simple as that.

Also, if they really did just change the "vibrating controller" function to do the "take blood" function, I'm half-guessing that the blood taken depends on how much/long the controller would vibrate?? Like, I doubt if someone playing Mortal Kombat while doing this would suddenly lose a ton of blood instantly, because they get a FATALITY and their neck-blood is spewing everywhere. Or something. Like, say the would-be remote vibrates for 3 seconds while getting that fatality. Now, say in...i dunno...some first-person-shooter of your choice, the would-be remote vibrates for 3 seconds once something explodes nearby. I think this would just take the same amount if blood as the MK fatality would. Now, i may be wrong, because clearly this article doesn't describe ALL the little details, but that's what i'm guessing.

Which, personally, i think this is all PRETTY interesting. I wonder why it got suspended though...
