Game Of Thrones Star Reflects On His Time On The Show

Jaime Lannister actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau speaks about why he's glade the show ended when it did.

HBO's Game of Thrones wrapped up its eighth and final season in 2019, bringing about an end to the very popular fantasy show. The franchise is living on with a spin-off TV show and of course another book from author George R.R. Martin. But the main show is finished.

Actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has now reflected on the legacy of the TV show as part of the wider TV landscape. He told Collider that it's probably too soon to have the discussion about how Game of Thrones has impacted TV, but he said he's happy to have been part a part of it. He enjoyed playing Jaime Lannister over the years, but he's glad Game of Thrones ended when it did.

"I had such a great time on that show. It was quite amazing that you go back to something for so long, and I was never bored or like, 'Oh, now I've gotta go back to this?' Because of the nature of the story, the story changed," he said. "My character was such a great character, and he was always on a new journey, so I'm gonna miss that. I miss it."

"I miss my friends and I miss the crew. But at the same time, it's also a relief that it's over because it was time to move on. You don't wanna overstay your welcome."

While fans might have been divided on the final season, it was a gigantic success for HBO. The final season averaged a breathtaking 44.2 million viewers per episode.

Coster-Waldau's latest project is the crime movie The Silencing, which is available to stream now.

I guess everybody who wanted to watch the show,he/she did already so i wont spoil anything.

I never read the books...did his character really needed to lose one hand that early?

Also,i hoped Jamie would learn to lead the sword with other hand at some point(he took some lessons here and there). I know,i reality it would took years, even decades to adapt but heck, this is a fantasy story...alot stranger things happened.

I am one of those who thinks that the great show overall (some seasons was better, some average at best) was almost irreperable damaged by the rushed last season.

I tend to buy a full season collection of great shows at some point but the last season ruined my wish to consider GoT.

From a monthly watch through to never watching it a single time since it ended, and Ive tried!

I cant really think of any other cultural phenomenon that disappeared so quick.

Arya needed to take the show out behind Winterfell and put it out of its misery.

How is this worthy of a news article? It's the same thing every actor of every show says.

I feel for the creators, as George R. R. Martin cannot seem to finish his series. He pumped out the first few books with in a 4 yr time span, 4th taking more years then the first three and 5th more then the 4th and so on. It has been almost a decade since dance of dragons and the last book in the series coming of spring has not even been penned yet. As a fan of the first three, long before the show started, the end to the series seemed near the first three books. I am as surprised as the show creators that he cannot, seem to find an end to it all.

While the end of the show may resemble the end to the books, everything went off the rails once the show creators had no road map with books taking 6yrs to a decade and him announcing, oh there will be another book added to the series...... padding that is not welcome in the books or the TV show. I thought DwD was entertaining but like hearing a story from your Mom that just keeps going on and on. When GoT tv show started they thought the series would end in 5 books and be well within the shows life..... oh well.

Still, the show was epic and welcome for its time (too much nudity for no reason for me, it made the gravity of the books less), not every property will pump out just perfectly like harry potter, or other YAF and this show proves it. Hell who knows the Game of Thrones books may end with this all being a dream by Bob Newhart.

I'm not sure "divided" is the right term for people's feelings about the last season... Unless you mean divided as in if you take a cheese slicer and slicer a single slice of cheese from a full size cheese you have technically divided the cheese in two... I'd say fans are pretty close to unanimous in their disappointment.

Real shame that show. Everything was amazing about it except the writing towards the end there lol. Great casting. Great acting. Great visuals. Great music. All very top notch. Even great writing... At first lol. It really does feel like it went down like this.

Season 1... The best...

Season 2... The second best...

Season 3 and 4 are not as good but still pretty kool...

And then awww crap.

And then awwwwww craaaappp.

Whatever though lol. Technically most of the show was good enough haha.
