Game of Thrones Prequel Series Being Discussed, HBO Boss Says

"It's still kind of preliminary, ongoing talks."

[UPDATE] HBO boss Casey Bloys made more comments about a Game of Thrones prequel in an interview with The Wrap.

"We've talked very, very kind of high-level, like, 'Oh, that would be interesting, a prequel would be interesting, are there areas that make more sense?' But we haven't--no one has put pen to paper--yet," Bloys said. "It's still pretty early on."

"It's such a great world and it's such a great property, we'd be crazy not to at least explore the idea of some sort of prequel or whatever you want to call it," he went on to say. "So, we are thinking about it, talking about it, but nothing really of note to report just yet."

The original story is below.

With Game of Thrones expected to wrap up after its eighth season, fans of the series might be wondering what could come after that. There have been talks of possible spinoffs, including a prequel series. Now, HBO boss Casey Bloys has commented on the status of a prequel project.

Asked by Entertainment Weekly if talks with author George R.R. Martin have yielded a specific idea that could eventually get made, Bloys confirmed talks were ongoing. However, he didn't get into specifics.

"I would say it's still kind of preliminary, ongoing talks," he said. "There are areas we are exploring but I wouldn't point to any one and say, 'This is what we're going to do.'"

Also in the interview, Bloys was asked if the final hours of Game of Thrones could be shown in theaters. He teased in response, "I want everything I can get for HBO, let me put it that way."

In September, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss said they likely won't be part of a potential prequel series, though they expect the franchise to live on.

That was not the first time the subject of a Game of Thrones spinoff came up. Benioff and Weiss said in July that the franchise is so rich and deep that there are countless storytelling opportunities.

"One of the great things about what [Martin] did is he didn't just build a story; he built a world with so many characters and such a rich, detailed history behind it," the pair explained. "There are a lot of different ways you could go with it; we just really haven't had time to really think through the details of it because we're so focused on getting the show made."

Game of Thrones Season 7 will premiere later than usual; rather than April, it'll instead debut sometime during the summer of 2017. It'll be shorter than past seasons, too, running only seven episodes. The first Season 7 teaser was released during San Diego Comic-Con and can be seen here.

In other news about Season 7, HBO has confirmed that Harry Potter actor Jim Broadbent will play a "significant" role in the season.

I hate prequels but I can stomach a GoT one only if its no where near current timeline. I don't want to see a young ned or robert or the mad king.

@soarlozer: Imagine them trying to make some of the characters look younger than they were the current show started. It won't work too well and recasting wouldn't be practical either.

No thanks. Keep it moving. I love Game of Thrones, and now I love Westworld too. More new series based on completely different subject matter please. Don't pander to fans. Some people's fandom makes it hard for them to tell when to let something go so it doesn't get ran into the ground. HBO is too cool for prequels. Let AMC **** with that BS.

@PS2fweak: What? You don't want a crossover between GoT and WW?

@PS2fweak: Disagree with the sentiment about prequels. Better Call Saul is probably the best show airing on AMC right now.

I'd love to see anything with Game of Thrones in the theme. Robert's Rebellion, Egg, or eventhe Rise of Valyria, the war with Ghis. Anything. I was told by peopel on Facebook who love Game of Thrones to check out Allfather Saga, by C.K. Sheldon. That was a Game of Thrones wet dream. 3 books recently published that have main characters in the future on a planet with dragons, talking about Tryion and Game of Thrones inside the most awesome story. It gets wild by book 2. A whole world.
As for any Game of Thrones shows, I'm all for anythign really. Even if they had one on the First Men fighting the children, I would watch it. I still want to read Winds of Winter, whenever that comes out as promised by George R.R.Martin. In the meantime I might re-read Allfather Saga. That series was that good.

Please George, finish the book!

As much as I love the show, I do not like prequels, and I have had my share with game of thrones for several years now. I need a change. Expanse and Stranger Things are doing it for me now, but for the die hard fans, I am happy for them that they might get another show, but don't expect as many views as GOT, because people get tired over time.

This is a no-brainer. There's still a ton of story to tell before the first book or the first episode of the series.

The smart thing to do would be to cover the "Tales of Dunk and Egg" three books set 90 years before a song of ice and fire. Or The two prequel books about house targaryen.

...because legions of subs will be dropping like flies.

Westworld is good, but like The Hobbit, it's too little source material spread over too many episodes.

I hope they leave it alone when the story is done......GOT is great but nothing good will come from going back to tell how Ned Stark came to power or Robert Barathian's war against the mad king or friggin how Tywin came to power or to go back even further and do ancient legend......what we have is great, I'm good with it, when the story is done I'll be okay with it's end.....

@SexyJazzCat: Same here, I would love to see more of the world building,. So many stories are out there to be made and the world is rich enough. That's why I started on Allfather Saga when other Game of Thrones fanatics pointed me to it. Has maps too and is new with 3 books.

I would even watch the Rise of Khal Drogo, or maybe the Rise of Volantis, after Valyria fell - and tellign the story of hwo they tried to recreate the Valyrian Empire after it fell. How cool would that be?

Or you could do something new. Sandman would be much better as an adult animated series.

@Pyrosa: I'm constantly afraid when I hear about the live action one they've been "working on" for like a decade. Even Joseph Gordon-Levitt dropped out like two iterations ago
