Game Of Thrones Creators Working On New Star Wars Movie Series

So long, Westeros.

Who needs a vacation? While Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are currently wrapping up the end of the epic HBO series, they already have their next project lined up, and it's a massive one. The duo will write and produce a series of Star Wars films.

The news comes from Lucasfilm, which says in a press release that the films the duo are developing will be separate from the current Skywalker saga and the trilogy of movies that Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is working on. "David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today," Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy says. "Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting."

No Caption Provided

For their part, Benioff and Weiss are excited about trading Westeros for space. "In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we've been dreaming of it ever since," the duo says in a statement. "We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete."

Game of Thrones is currently in production on its final season. No release dates have been set for these new Star Wars movie, but clearly, Benioff and Weiss will start their work on the films once they've wrapped filming on the HBO series. What remains in question is what becomes of Confederate, the previously announced series from the duo that was developing as their follow-up series on the network. When asked about the status of the series, HBO tells GameSpot, "We don't have any additional information at this time." Upon being first announced, the series--which is set in a world where the southern states actually seceded from the Union and slavery remained legal--was met with a very negative reaction.

This can only be a good thing, considering the current direction of Star Wars. These two can only do better than Rian Johnson's catastrophe.

Rian Johnson has never made anything worth remembering. Game of Thrones, meanwhile, is one of an elite few shows that highlight the pinnacle of the golden age of television.

It's baffling that people don't want to have an educated and intelligent discussion about the Confederacy and the Civil War but rather censor all evidence that it occurred, and one could argue that American symbols are just as racist as, if more so, than Confederate symbols, since many "racist" things happened under the American flag, as well.

@Mickeyminime: *sigh* I wish. Or KotoR 3. Or even a modern game that isn't an MMO using KotoR's formula.

@Pac1Man: I guarantee you it was people being racist in response to even the slightest hint that there was a social justice message in the movie. White nationalism is out of control.

Oh dear god.

I am excited about the prospect of this series but seriously Kathleen! Don’t you pay attention to anything. Hire George Martin who actually wrote GoT and not these 2 for-TV writers. The last season of GoT is trash compared to the previous ones. Rushed and unfinished.

@P00DGE: pretty good, yes, if a little disjointed compared to the first 6 seasons where character took an age to mature. But starting final season with the invasion is probably where they wanted to end up so understandable.

@halicarnassis: Writing for Film and TV is very different than writing a novel. Very few novelists make good screenwriters. Besides there's now way George Martin could ever stay on deadline.

@ThePope2k6: I agree both genres are different to write for - I think Matthew Reilly has the skill to write for both. GRRM is in the same box as Patrick Rothfuss when it comes to meeting deadlines. You just can't rush genius can you :)

would be cool if they developed the stories for the other side of the jedi, that is all the other major counsel members and their battles and rise to jedi master. completely separate means no cameos and nothing to do with the SW saga.

@j3diknightdave: They wasted maul in the rebels cartoon. Could of had an amazing live action rematch in an Obi Wan Kenobi movie but not possible now. The stunt guy Ray Park who played Darth Maul is even the right age now to have done something like that between Revenge & A New Hope.

Han Solo comes out at the end of may, then dec 2019 is Ep9, and that's it for awhile. The third but as of now unannounced anthology film which only exists as rumors (Obi Wan?) will probably not happen. I also think Rian Johnson's trilogy won't see a starting release until 2021, 2020 if they start filming this year...maybe. And the game of thrones guys... let's say they start around the same time as Rian Johnson, let's run with a 2021 release, Rians trilogy could release the same way the current batch are...every second year so 2021-2023-2025. Game of thrones could release theirs 2022-2024-2026. By that time it's been about 7 years since ep 9, they announce Ep 10,11,12 starting 2030 which is enough time between saga films as that puts a total of 11 years between 9 and 10. Anyway this all just opinion, I could be wrong but i'll end my rant with, I liked The Last Jedi, i'm looking forward to Rian's own trilogy and intrigued by the game of throne guys coming into the Star Wars family.

Sick of hearing of Game of Thrones and sick of hearing of Star Wars.. People are too much like sheep these days, it's like they don't have their own brain and consider critics to be gods that know all. It's not like people don't have their own taste in films or anything right?.. oh wait.

No sorry, i forgot.. only IMDB scores and such matter to anyone..

@perfect_chao: I find it really silly that you just think people only like Game of Thrones and Star Wars because they are told to... by critics? You have a superiority complex man. You aren't better or smarter than most people. Believe it or not, people actually like these things because it appeals to them, not because a critic told them to.

@perfect_chao: don't be daft.all you need to do is check any comment section of anything star wars related and you will see the average joe can see past critics and will let you know what they really think. Ironicly it's people like you who are the sheep that post the exact same stuff as if it's edgy.thing is most people realise that unless they make there own movies then they will just have to make do with what is avalible and get on with it and watch what they can enjoy and hopefully can be pleasantly surprised now and again.

Terrible, these guys are no talent hacks. Why would they put Rain Johnson in charge after a lot of people hated The Last Jedi. I mean The Last Jedi was so bad that Rain Johnson keeps going out of his way to defend the movie on his social media accounts.

I still remember that some time after The Revenge of the Sith, "it was said" (probably rumors at first) that a TV series for Star Wars would finally see the light of the day. Here we are so many years later with this official news.

That's what Star Wars always lacked of, in my opinion. A proper long term TV series set in the Star Wars universe (and away from the Skywalker saga, and maybe even away from its time period). For me, the best Star Wars stories outside of the all-time classic original Trilogy of movies are found within the Expended Universe of novels and even some games (KOTOR1, KOTOR2, The Force Unleashed, Shadows of the Empire, and some of the main three Chapters' respective story telling in the Old Republic campaigns).

If, finally, Star Wars can get a Star Trek-'esque' treatment on TV that will last at least 4 or 5 years then I do feel that it can only be for the best of the Star Wars name in general. Especially after the abomination that was The Last Jedi, and the flop that I totally feel the Han Solo movie will end up be. The only decent movie that came out of the Disney acquisition was Rogue One. And as soon as we go away from the Skywalker saga the much better the stories can be. The Skywalker saga ended with a movie called The Return of the Jedi, it was good closure and we really didn't need anything else, especially not set 30 freakin' years later with paper-thin info for the huge gap in between.

Overall, I say hell yeah, bring that Star Wars series on. I wouldn't say that we all "need" or "want" it. But ironically, I do think that Star Wars itself needs it for its own sake now more than ever before. And I mean... it's from the Game of Thrones guys. I'm sure and I hope that it will all surprise us for the best. Heck I'm even ready for a MUCH grittier approach on the franchise. Give us the REAL face of a conflict between the light and the dark, doesn't even need to be Jedi and Sith. Give me the political backstabbing and infiltration and espionage stories, give me the corruption and redemption stories. Give it all, and make it a piece of art. In all honesty I'm not sure if I'm actually "ready" for a Star Wars series, but deep down inside me especially after Episode 8 the one thing I want the most right now is to completely forget that it actually happened and to stay as far away as possible from that saga that never needed continuity in the first place.
