Now Playing: Remnant: From the Ashes Gameplay

Following the 50 manager layoffs from earlier this month, GameStop has laid off over 100 additional employees. These latest job cuts hit multiple divisions throughout the company, ranging from corporate to Game Informer magazine.

"As part of the previously announced GameStop Reboot initiative to transform our business for the future and improve our financial performance, we can confirm a workforce reduction was implemented impacting more than 120 corporate staff positions, representing approximately 14% of our total associate base at our company headquarters as well as at some other offices," GameStop wrote in a statement to GameSpot.

The Reboot initiative was implemented after GameStop failed to sell itself in 2018, though the company has continued to struggle in the growing digital gaming market. The company has put a greater emphasis on used games and pop culture collectibles sales, but both seem to only be slowing GameStop's descent, not stopping it.

"While these changes are difficult, they were necessary to reduce costs and better align the organization with our efforts to optimize the business to meet our future objectives and success factors," the statement concluded. "We recognize that this is a difficult day for our company and particularly for those associates impacted. We appreciate their dedication and service to GameStop and are committed to supporting them during this time of transition."

Unfortunately for several members of the Game Informer staff, the layoffs impacted them as well. Of the 19 full-time members on the editorial team, seven have announced on Twitter that they have been laid off--managing editor Matt Bertz, senior editor Imran Khan, senior associate editor Kyle Hilliard, senior associate editor Jeff Marchiafava, associate editor Suriel Vazquez, associate editor Elise Favis, and associate editor Javy Gwaltney. If you're looking for talented writers and editors to join your staff, consider reaching out. All seven deserve to continue doing what they did for Game Informer.

"I am trying to get things right with my people," Game Informer editor-in-chief Andy McNamara tweeted. "I love Game Informer, its people and its readers more than any corporation could, and I will address all the issues when I can, but for now I need to focus on my GI family."

Game Informer can go under and Gamestop employees will still pester you into ordering a subscription to it.

They'll never lay off Kimberly, though...'Cause of reasons... Notice how they always let her get 1st pick of any leads. Notice how she covers Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077...the two biggest games.

I am surprised Gameinformer has lasted this long as being a magazine. I seen a lot of videogame magazines like GMR, EGM, OPM, PSM Gamepro, Nintendo Power just shutdown over the years. Gameinformer, I really don't see making it toward the end of the year. I wouldn't be surprised if Gameinformer gets shutdown by the end of 2019. Gamestop, I haven't bought anything from them since I got Ni No Kuni 2 Day One Edition for $20 during their Power Pro Day sale. That's probably the only good thing about that Power Up Rewards card as I never thought it would actually pay to have it.

@pillarrocks: I don't know what they're like these days, haven't had a sub in a while, but years ago they were a pretty good mag. They may have been the last decent gaming publication, had some decent writers and the fanboying was kept to a minimum since their parent company was more than happy to sell you anything. I still have my September 2007 issue, with the Borderlands reveal.

I enjoyed Gameinformer back in 2002, the magazine had alot of content. Now it's pretty thin and my subscription ends in November so probably won't renew it.

My younger brother still picks up Game Informer whenever he stops by a Gamespot which is kind of off and on. I kinda think that's neat from a nostalgia perspective (By way of reference, he's 43 so that should tell you how long he's been keeping up with it.).

@thepyrethatburn: Nice! I'd probably still visit my GS, actually had some cool people working there, but it's been closed awhile. There's one across town, although I usually only make the drive if it's a deal I can't get elsewhere.

I love shopping at GS & loved shopping online when their game prices were rock bottom & especially when they had a sale on top of that. I still love GS, but I dislike it when the employees are in your face trying to sell PowerUps, reserves, guarantees on items & the likes. What a way to turn off your customers and I have purposely not gone into their store because I don't want to be harassed & they lost a few sales because of this!!! I have never traded anything in at GS, since I just sell my stuff on Ebay & Craigslist and get the most money I can back for it. I will be sad if GS closes down & they need to close down a few stores, as they have too many of them. There are 3 of them within a 10 mile radius where I am at & there is no need for me to be jumping to all 3 areas, when I can just go to one.

Also, they are slick now & raised the prices on all their used games & then pretend they have a sale to lower it a few bucks, far above the original low price they had originally. As a result I won't be buying many games from them right now as many can be had cheaper on Ebay and delivered to my door. Their PowerUps are useless now & I won't be buying that again. I have not bought anything in such a long time from them, but if some of the prices drop I may buy a few more games just because they are cheap enough and I probably won't even play those games much. I still have a stack full of games from them that I have not even touched yet.

The ignorant hatred here is so thick, you could cut with a knife. I've shopped at GameStop for years, not had the first issue. I understand that things depreciate, it's what happens. I also know in terms of trades, Best Buy isn't going to do any better. If they don't have a wrapped copy of my game, I simply don't buy it.

Something else to think about. GameStop goes belly up, where will you (unless it's a mom & pop type place) that has anywhere close to their selection of used games. Where will you besides Best Buy to trade in a game for credit to save money? You people can be ignorant and dance on their grave all you like. But if GameStop goes down, the video game industry is impacted negatively.

@MkScorpion4400:

Eh, they offer so little on trade-ins that I don't even think it's worth doing anymore. I can't remember the last time I traded a game in. And if the game's even remotely recent, it's not worth buying used just to knock off a whole $5.

Buying and selling used games just isn't the deal it used to be.

Knew the writing was on the wall for Game Informer, when I got filled out a survey about GS's PUR program. Which asked if removing the GI subscription from the Power Up Rewards Pro tier would change that. Kinda surprised the magazine has managed to last this long, when every other gaming mag shuttered 5-10 years ago. Wouldn't be surprised if they completely shutdown the magazine by the end of the year.

But with these layoffs, sounds like Gamestop has one foot in the grave already. They're trying to cut the higher paid positions(Regional managers, District managers, Senior editors on GI) to save money. When every other company that has gone under tried that and failed.

It brings me sexual gratification to know that one of the worst companies with terrible practices is being hit hard.

I kinda hope they file for bankruptcy and shut down. I don't know why we even support GS anyway considering they charge more than anywhere else and offer you absolute shit when wanting to trade or cash in.

@Person4: Not defending this place since I feel like I might catch some kind of disease whenever I walk in but its your own fault if you let yourself get ripped off when there’s been better alternatives for ages now..i.e., Craigslist.

@Person4: ehh I got Ni No Kuni 2 Collector's, Hitman 2 Collector's and Call Of Duty Black Ops 4 Mystery Box Edition from Gamestop for $120 altogether. Nowhere else could I have found that deal. It was also giving new copies of SNK Heroines for Switch and Kirby Battle Royale for $10 each during the summer sale.

Sure some stores and employees use terrible customer service practices but if you're ready for it and know how to deal with it then you can still get some of the best deals in gaming every now and then. It going away is actually going to be pretty bad for physical media as a whole.

I have no experience of this store what with living in England but have heard nothing but bad things about the company. I imagine that they are the equivalent of GAME stores over here who also have the policy of lying to people, attempting to sell "insurance" on new games (and not honouring it when required to do so), selling bad stock to the unknowing (parents at Christmas time for example) enrolling people into loyalty schemes that provide nothing but 50p off a full priced game at the most etc.

I have symapthy for staff who have no say in these unscrupulous business practices and are losing their jobs but it is clear that the best thing for everyone is for this dinosaur to go into liquidation.

@gotrekfabian: It's kind of like EA. Some of the hatred is well-deserved but some of it is overblown. Having dealt with other places, Gamestop's buyback/used game selling policies weren't really any worse than places like Entertainmart.

Overall, even if I weren't slowly getting out of gaming, I still wouldn't shed too many tears. Physical media had it's day but that day is over. Gamestop's demise will probably be the final push needed for console gaming to finally join PC gaming in a digital-only medium.

I was in a GS the other day. I noticed the section where they normally put all the used games was now filled with "new" games...despite being opened and just as scuffed up as the used games in the bargain bin.

That used copy of God of War I got the other week? Looks pristine. $20.

Methinks GS is deserving everything they're getting.

I feel no sadness at the collapse of Gamestop.

Before someone bewails my lack of concern for their out of work employees, has any of them given any concern for the way they have cheated, tricked, sold open box games as new, and otherwise conned their customers.
