Galactic Civilizations III revealed for 64-bit PCs

Next chapter in strategy game franchise from Stardock to feature multiplayer, "vastly improved visuals," and overhauled ship-builder.

Stardock today announced Galactic Civilizations III, a sequel to 2006's Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords. The new game is in development exclusively for 64-bit PCs. No release date was been announced.

Galactic Civilizations III, a turn-based strategy game, will include new features like multiplayer, "political intrigue," and "vastly improved visuals." New terrain elements like black holes, a "completely overhauled" ship builder, and a new resource system are also included.

"The move to 64-bit architecture heralds a new era of game development at Stardock," Stardock vice president Derek Paxton in a statement. "The technology allows players to experience a level of graphical detail and on-screen activity unprecedented in large-scale strategy PC games. It dramatically increases the size and scope of the maps, and opens the door for modders to add a virtually unlimited amount of new content to the game."

Players can join the Galactic Civilizations III Founder's program today at $40 to receive beta access through the game's website. Meanwhile, the $100 Founder's Elite Edition gives players all future DLC and expansions when they are released, as well as alpha access, their name in the credits, and the ability to name a star that will appear in-game.

The announcement of Galactic Civilizations III comes as Stardock celebrates its 20th anniversary. The company was founded by Brad Wardell in his college dorm room and has since released games like Sins of a Solar Empire and various non-game software like Start8.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Maybe you haven't heard but they are making a new Homeworld.

Gearbox got the IP and (thankfully) they did something smart with it, they reached out to ex-homeworld developers who were making a new space game called "Hardware: Shipbreakers" and they are allowing them to use the Homeworld IP for their game so now we are getting a new homeworld brand game from some of the original homeworld developers.

You can see a very early video from Homeworld: Shipbreakers here:

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Not only that, the 32-bit and 64-bit OS's are identical in price. It makes no sense to buy a 32-bit OS if you're a PC gamer.

I hope they took some inspiration from Distant Worlds if they add new features. GalCiv2 was awesome but could have been a little more complx, Distant Worlds was complex but I always felt disconnected with individual planets.

Aw, I thought it was the Civilization game only in space with different planets, planet conquering, and space battles. Like this is what happens after a Science Victory. That would be sick. Oh well maybe this game is good too.

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri was what happened after a Space Victory in Civilization; heh.

Only bad news is there is no release date, which means it's probably a fair way off.

Can't wait until we get to see the new visuals, the map, get an idea about the tech tree, see the shipbuilder and all the other things that made GalCiv2 so good.

Extremely good news! Stardock is one of those companies that releases a game then keeps working on it. making it better even years later. It's one of the very few companies that I *might* actually pre-order from.

Hell Yeah! I have been getting my space sim fix from Sins but it lacked the depth of the GC series, now I can only hope that we get some of those awesome space battles added to the GC series thus getting the perfect game.

I was very impressed by GalCiv 2- it's a worthy successor to the Master of Orion series. Hopefully GalCiv 3 won't be like MoO3.
