Galactic Civilizations III revealed for 64-bit PCs

Next chapter in strategy game franchise from Stardock to feature multiplayer, "vastly improved visuals," and overhauled ship-builder.

Stardock today announced Galactic Civilizations III, a sequel to 2006's Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords. The new game is in development exclusively for 64-bit PCs. No release date was been announced.

Galactic Civilizations III, a turn-based strategy game, will include new features like multiplayer, "political intrigue," and "vastly improved visuals." New terrain elements like black holes, a "completely overhauled" ship builder, and a new resource system are also included.

"The move to 64-bit architecture heralds a new era of game development at Stardock," Stardock vice president Derek Paxton in a statement. "The technology allows players to experience a level of graphical detail and on-screen activity unprecedented in large-scale strategy PC games. It dramatically increases the size and scope of the maps, and opens the door for modders to add a virtually unlimited amount of new content to the game."

Players can join the Galactic Civilizations III Founder's program today at $40 to receive beta access through the game's website. Meanwhile, the $100 Founder's Elite Edition gives players all future DLC and expansions when they are released, as well as alpha access, their name in the credits, and the ability to name a star that will appear in-game.

The announcement of Galactic Civilizations III comes as Stardock celebrates its 20th anniversary. The company was founded by Brad Wardell in his college dorm room and has since released games like Sins of a Solar Empire and various non-game software like Start8.

Been waiting for this one so long.

By the way, it's just me that has problems with the audio?

<< LINK REMOVED >> Maybe you haven't heard but they are making a new Homeworld.

Gearbox got the IP and (thankfully) they did something smart with it, they reached out to ex-homeworld developers who were making a new space game called "Hardware: Shipbreakers" and they are allowing them to use the Homeworld IP for their game so now we are getting a new homeworld brand game from some of the original homeworld developers.

You can see a very early video from Homeworld: Shipbreakers here:

<< LINK REMOVED >> Steam survey says 75% of users have 64 bit operating systems, so not really.

Avatar image for XIntoTheBlue

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Not only that, the 32-bit and 64-bit OS's are identical in price. It makes no sense to buy a 32-bit OS if you're a PC gamer.

Looks interesting.Think I'll catch up with its predecessors first.

I hope they took some inspiration from Distant Worlds if they add new features. GalCiv2 was awesome but could have been a little more complx, Distant Worlds was complex but I always felt disconnected with individual planets.

Aw, I thought it was the Civilization game only in space with different planets, planet conquering, and space battles. Like this is what happens after a Science Victory. That would be sick. Oh well maybe this game is good too.

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri was what happened after a Space Victory in Civilization; heh.

Avatar image for adrianjarca

<< LINK REMOVED >> Well Galactic Civ is basically Civ in space only much much better and deeper. Gameplay is 80% similar.

Avatar image for AngelsongCA

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I'll have to try it then.

Shit! Where's my wallet!?

Only bad news is there is no release date, which means it's probably a fair way off.

Can't wait until we get to see the new visuals, the map, get an idea about the tech tree, see the shipbuilder and all the other things that made GalCiv2 so good.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I think Brad is done with release dates after the War of Magic release flop.

Avatar image for jadaski1

If they include a campaign mode, I'm in.

Avatar image for adrianjarca

<< LINK REMOVED >> They will but you may or may not understand what's going on unless you've played the previous games.

Extremely good news! Stardock is one of those companies that releases a game then keeps working on it. making it better even years later. It's one of the very few companies that I *might* actually pre-order from.

Avatar image for smoker1993

<< LINK REMOVED >> After the catastrophe that was Rome 2 i said i will never pre-order again.

But f that i'm buying this before launch so i can get to beta.

Avatar image for Chibiabos

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Stardock had a disastrous release of War of Magic ... but made things right by giving pre-orderers and early buyers two free expansions (Fallen Enchantress and Legendary Heroes).

damn that big ship is OP

Avatar image for XIntoTheBlue

<< LINK REMOVED >> You can use this reasoning for any game, really. Don't want to pay full price? Just wait a while and it'll get cheaper. It's inevitable.

Avatar image for Zloth2

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Excuse hell, I'm getting forced into it! With all the Steam/Amazon/Humble Bundle/GOG sales it's hard to clear the board enough to buy a game before it goes on sale.

Avatar image for XIntoTheBlue

Oh hell yes! I've been hoping for another GalCiv game for years! StarDock is also an amazing company, and the potential for this game is sure to be there.

Avatar image for sigmact

i hate to admit i never heard of this game before

Avatar image for eas022

<< LINK REMOVED >> same here. i hope there's a miranda look alike. no space game is complete without dat ass

Avatar image for adrianjarca

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Facepallm.

This is a tbs, like civilization only in space.

Avatar image for Kabals

<< LINK REMOVED >> Are you a PC gamer?

Avatar image for Zloth2

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Well it has been quite a few years since GC2 came out.

Avatar image for sigmact

i hate to admit this but, whats this game?

Say what?! I cannot understand ..what we have seen already looked mindblowing in the first place! :O

Avatar image for orbit991

<< LINK REMOVED >> The whole point of that is to help support a small developer not about it being a "deal".

cant wait, love sins and this will be awesome!

Avatar image for luciann

Avatar image for Krauklis

Hell Yeah! I have been getting my space sim fix from Sins but it lacked the depth of the GC series, now I can only hope that we get some of those awesome space battles added to the GC series thus getting the perfect game.

Avatar image for gbeck1

Definitely will get this, may be a long wait though

Avatar image for Maize84

Finally! I have been looking up news about this game every other week for the last few years. :D

Avatar image for JLCrogue

Awesome! I can't wait for this game to come out! I think I might give them $100...

Avatar image for GAMERALL

Fantastic news. Also another nail in the 32-Bit PC coffin...!

Avatar image for bouchart

I was very impressed by GalCiv 2- it's a worthy successor to the Master of Orion series. Hopefully GalCiv 3 won't be like MoO3.

Avatar image for Mozuckint

What a day it's been.

Absolutely wonderful news! In my veins Stardock!
