Full Sega Genesis / Mega Drive Mini Games List Confirmed, Includes Some Super-Rare Titles

SEEEEGGAAAAA.

After releasing information in waves over the past few weeks, Sega has finally revealed the final games list of its Mega Drive / Genesis Mini console. Among the last 12 titles to be revealed are a couple of welcome surprises, including Tetris and Darius. Here's a look at what to expect when it launches later this year.

Darius never actually came to the original console--it's a brand-new port, specifically for the Mega Drive / Genesis Mini. The original console's version of Tetris, meanwhile, is exceedingly rare, with only three physical copies available in the wild. Both games will be pre-installed on the new Mini console.

Now Playing: The History of Sonic Games

The other games revealed today are Road Rash II, Strider, Virtua Fighter 2, Alisia Dragoon, Columns, Dynamite Headdy, Kid Chameleon, Monster World IV, Light Crusader, and Eternal Champions. They bring the final count up to 42 games, with other big titles like Earthworm Jim and Sonic the Hedgehog also included.

The Mega Drive Mini / Genesis Mini releases worldwide on September 19, costing $80 / £70 / AU $140. It's based on the Model 1 version of the original console, except approximately 55% smaller. The box contains the console, a power adapter, two replica three-button USB controllers, one USB to micro-USB power cable, and one HDMI lead. Fore more details on how to buy it, check out our Genesis Mini pre-order guide.

The game ports that are on the Genesis Mini were handled by M2, a team that is well known for its work on emulation and re-releases. M2 previously worked on Sega Ages and Sega 3D Classics Collection.

Releasing Mini versions of classic consoles has become something of a trend recently. Nintendo led the way with the NES Classic and the SNES Classic, both of which were received well by critics and went on to be hot commercial items. Sony followed suit with the PlayStation Classic, which wasn't received as warmly.

They should not have left out Virtua Racing.

and Virtua Fighter 2 should not been included, that game is a 2D abomination. Since this is all emulation, they should have just stuck in Virtua Fighter (32X version).

@c_smithii: Sega Mega Drive collection on PC has Virtua Fighter 2.

If you own a PC, there's no real reason to get this. Get the Sega Mega Drive collection on Steam. Cheaper, more games, and you can side-load other games.

@CyberEarth: There's still no ( Ristar ) in that collection that was a hidden gem back in the days that Sega did and many people didn't even know exist.

@CyberEarth: This is being targeted at a different audience, a nostalgia play where the physical form is just as important to aging Gen X'ers as the games included.

@zmanbarzel: The only thing that is physical is the console. All the games are virtual. The only "different" audience this is targeting are the people that don't own a PC or are unaware of the collection on Steam. If you are unaware, then you're just ignorant (it's the literal definition). And if you don't own a PC... well... uhh... probably the same.

You can run the Sega Collection on a potato made 10 years ago. Oh - and you can also side-load additional games. It's also CHEAPER.

Which to get?!? Hrmm...

@CyberEarth: "The only thing that is physical is the console."

Right, which is the main draw of this. The same can be said for the NES and SNES Classics, and they sold like hotcakes.

The people this is targeting — the same people that Nintendo targeted with its retro consoles — DON'T CARE that many of the same games are available on PC or on other platforms. They want that splash of nostalgia from their childhoods. Hell, most of them won't play the thing beyond plugging it in and trying all the games once.

@zmanbarzel: The difference is that Nintendo games are limited. There's no (legal) Nintendo platform on PC. There is for Sega, and they've marketed the PC collection.

Many of the games on the NES/SNES consoles also weren't released on Wii/U/Switch backlog library, either. Again, Nintendo is just a more limited format.

@CyberEarth: You're completely missing the point. This has nothing to do with which collection has more value or is more convenient. Of COURSE PC is better for this sort of thing. That's irrelevant.

This is about having the actual physical thing. That classic Sega controller in your hands. That old school feel. It's pure nostalgia. Yes, it's kind of illogical, but that's the point. It's for them. Not you.

Some really good games I’m there that are worth full price now, like Wonder Boy 4 and Toe Jan & Earl and Castle of Illusion (can’t believe they pulled THAT off!) and Kid Chameleon. Probably Landstalker

Though I’m still disappointed by some clunkers.Dynamite Heady and Comix Zone...

Shining Force 2 is much better than 1, Shinobi 2 is much better than 3.

Ecco The dolphin is much better on SEGAcd and it makes me sad how little love that system gets.

And it should ship with 6 button controllers, considering the games that need them.

But still, a hell of a lot of great games.

If you really loot at it the Sega classic console has actually more than 42 games because Mega Man®: The Wily Wars has 3 games in it, the first 3 megaman games release for the NES done in a remake for the total of 44 games. I can't belive they didn't include ( Ristar ) that game was one of those hidden gems done by Sega. It was a beautiful game that most people don't even know it even existed for the Sega Genesis

Can't they just release this as a game on current consoles/pc instead of making you have ANOTHER box to plug into your tv?

@Vodoo: Besides what Cyber said, the lower retail price expected for a retail disc for current consoles would mean its budget would be less. You would say goodbye to all the third-party games as Konami and Capcom could make more money selling their games on their own on the various digital storefronts.

@CyberEarth: I'm console-only. I have the Sega Classics, but they don't offer Mega Drive. That's why I said Altered Beast sucks now compared to how I remember it.

I just think it would be better to release this on ONE console disc compared to hardware. If anything, they should do a Dreamcast, not a Genesis.

@Vodoo: They released Sega Classics on PS4/Xbox as well. So the only reason to get the retro physical console is if you own neither major console of this generation OR a PC...

I remember I use to LOVE playing Altered Beast back then. It was the game I bought the system for. Now it feels very clunky to play.

I think they should've included the OG Mortal Kombat, with Fatalities, because it was a signature game for the console. It was literally a reason to have the Genesis over the SNES. Though it would probably cost more than Sega wants to license it.

Lunar The Silver Star was on Sega CD (re-released on PS1 as Lunar: Silver Star Story), and BoF 3 was on PS1.

No NHLPA Hockey 92?? Dang! Fingers crossed the 'keys' will be served on golden platter to the modding community just in the PS Classic... Would be really great to install some 32X and Sega CD titles. This starting set list is very very strong though.

Nice, yet the controllers should be the 6 button versions seeing as there are some fighting games that basically require 6 buttons. Pretty lame to include those games and not include the controllers you need to properly play them.

@plind12: would be nice but the original genesis was 3 button, with the 6 button offered later in its life with sega mk versions onward offering 6 button. The start button then gives your the total 6 with no pause. Oh, there is no better satisfaction then comparing the blister on the tip of your thumb with that of your foe setting beside you, to see who has the meanest one. Totally do-able and fond memories.

I'm glad to see them going for a nice mix of well known classics and rarer less rereleased games like Alisia Dragoon and Megaman The Wily Wars. I love having the full Sonic collection as part of SEGA+Mega Drive Classics Collection on Steam, but I also like some lesser known games to be thrown in, everyone mentioning sports games makes me want Powerball in there, still my fav sports game on the system :D. I'd be on the fence if it was just the same content from other collections but with the mix in there I will probably be trying to get one of these.

EDIT:

Also throwing in a nice new port of a shmup like Darius helps my decision.

I chose the SNES as a kid in the console war, and had parents who wouldn't get me both.

For a guy like me, this is a great list to check out what I missed. Which I will obviously be doing once this thing drops!
