Full List of Xbox One Backwards Compatible Games (So Far)

There will be "hundreds" by the time the service launches in full this fall.

With the introduction of Gears of War 1 and Shadow Complex today for Xbox One backwards compatibility and plans for more Gears games in the future, the list of supported games has risen to more than two dozen. The service is available now only for Xbox One Preview Program members (available by invite only), but when it rolls out publicly this fall, there will be "hundreds" of available titles.

No Caption Provided

While Microsoft has not yet published the final list (it's only August, after all), we have already learned close to 30 of the games that will be available.

Check out the list below, but be aware that the list is subject to change. Be sure to bookmark this page, as we'll keep updating it throughout the year.

Don't see your favorite game here? Head to the Xbox Feedback website and let Microsoft know what game you want to see added to the list. The most-requested game right now is Call of Duty: Black Ops II--which Snoop Dogg might have something to say about.

The Xbox One outsold the PlayStation 4 during the week of E3, something that Microsoft thinks is at least partially attributable to backwards compatibility.

No Fable, Dead Rising, Blue Dragon, Tales of Vesperia, or anything else that people might actually want. I would like Culdcept, Phantasy Star Universe, and Operation Darkness to start.

@exedeath: Because backwards compatibility is only being tested rightnow with a select of games. Backwards compatibility coming out for every one this fall. As MS stated that the company who own those games you mentioned would have to approve for them to be downloadable on Xbox one. Rightnow they are letting us vote on what games we want to see in the Xbox forums.

@exedeath: We can't even get the light of PSO2, I really doubt we'd see PSU even get approval from how Sega has been lately with us about the series.

@exedeath: Vesperia isn't feasable and won't happen. Namco lost money with that game by releasing it exclusively on 360 in the states.

@kirito500: That don't rule it out in any way since BC conversion cost Namco nothing and approving it may mean more sales over time.

@virtuasega: Here's the wikipedia definition of backward compatibility.

"In telecommunications and computing, a product or technology is backward compatible (BC)[1] or downward compatible if it can work with input generated by or meant to an older product or technology such as a legacy system.[2] If products designed for the new standard can receive, read, view or play older standards or formats, then the product is said to be backward-compatible; examples of such a standard include data formats and communication protocols. Modifications to a system that do not allow backward compatibility are sometimes called "breaking changes.""

No mention of requiring a physical disc being inserted into a gaming console. This is backward compatibility, MS is doing it, Sony isn't. Deal with it and stop making yourself look stupid.

@virtuasega: Except there is no such thing as "true" backwards compatibility. This is as much backwards compatible as any solution you think is "true".

@dlCHIEF58: 7Ummm...yes there is. The original ps3 had it, you could play any and all ps2 and ps1 games in it, or at least 99.99% of them. What MS is doing is a joke and is just here as a bullet point for them to "one up" the competition. Roughly 25 games to date out of a backlog of probably thousands...lol, that's not BC kid.

@virtuasega: No that is your narrow definition of backwards compatibility that you are using as a basis for a fanboy argument, which is hardware based and later software based on the PS3. This is every bit a true backwards compatibility as the software emulation that was on the later PS3s.

Limited titles? HELLO, this is in BETA so only a few titles are being tested at this time. Permission is needed since Microsoft has to redistribute the titles with the Virtual Machine/emulation wrapper on a system they were never licensed to be released on to begin with. The games need to be downloaded to the hard drive because the One (and the PS4 FYI) were never designed to run ANY games from a disc, only from the hard drive.

And I'm no kid, would't be a bit surprised if I was old enough to be your grandfather you little snot.

@dlCHIEF58: No matter what your old, dumbass says this isn't BC, again just the fact that 99% of the 360s games won't work is proof enough. They'll add a few titles each month for awhile, and just like they did with "BC" on the 360 they'll stop way before all games are available. Oh and BOTH machines were designed for disc playback, its why it was so simple for MS to add that feature after that horrible e3 showing they had. It's just like the one couldn't function without kinnect lol, keep believing the lies. Just because you're old doesn't mean your not retarded, always remember that.

@illage2: Except for the fact the One (and PS4 as well for that matter) are not designed to run ANY games from the BluRay drive, so it is necessary to do it this way. And your specific definition of backwards compatibility is wrong.

@alucardmorgurth: I also realized that with my physical games. Ever since I owned my 360 since launch I've stacked about 160+, maybe even more games in my closet.. Don't even get me started on Digital games... Just hoping I'll be able to enjoy a majority down the line. But won't bother me TOO much since I still have my 360

Ghostbusters: The Video Game

Jet Set Radio Future (Yeah I know it's an original)

Grand Theft Auto IV

All these others are pretty stupid except for Perfect Dark. (The XBLA version)

Maybe Mass Effect, but I'm still holding out for the HD remaster of the trilogy I keep hearing rumored.

@alexk1088: I was not aware they ever took them away, as Gears 3 was always to be run on dedicated servers and the BC version would run on those same servers (since it is after all the same game).

I think the best way to play all those old games is buying an old consoles to play those games. I think they are very cheap now, you can buy again through second-hand shop or from someone. So that you don't need to wait for them to make it compatible for Xbox One or any remaster as you said to PS4.

@jkrebs76: The Viva Pinata "sequel" isn't actually a sequel but rather a GOTY version of the first game. New content, reworkings, etc. I found that out the hard way years ago when I purchased it which explains why it wasn't called Viva Pinata 2.

To answer your question about what is Viva Pinata, here's a very short 22 second video link with Bill Gates explaining what they were making with Viva Pinata:

Bill Gates says Viva Pinata is for young girls.

@Gravity_Slave: How many times did you type this? Three times? Isn't that annoying? I've been using bold as hundreds of others here with no problems at all. Typing in all caps is not the same thing and I know the difference. I've been using bold since the 1990's on the internet and since 2005 on Gamespot.com.
