Microsoft is extending its free Windows 10 upgrade offer even to those who pirated Windows 7 or Windows 8, executive Terry Myerson reveals in a new interview with Reuters.

"We are upgrading all qualified PCs, genuine and non-genuine, to Windows 10," he said.

A Microsoft representative later confirmed Myerson's comments, adding that the company hopes to "re-engage" with software pirates.

"Anyone with a qualified device can upgrade to Windows 10, including those with pirated copies of Windows," the representative told The Verge. "We believe customers over time will realize the value of properly licensing Windows and we will make it easy for them to move to legitimate copies."

As was previously announced, for the first twelve months following Windows 10's launch, PCs running Windows 7 and 8 will be eligible for a free upgrade to the new OS.

This week, Microsoft announced that Windows 10 will launch this summer, though the technology giant has not yet pinned down a specific release date. Microsoft also revealed that it's working with Chinese Internet giant Tencent to bring the massively popular MOBA League of Legends to Windows 10.

Windows 10 features a new Xbox gaming app, which will not require Xbox Live Gold. Meanwhile, another marquee gaming feature for Windows 10 is that it will allow Xbox One games to stream to PCs and tablets running the new OS. In addition, Windows 10 supports cross-platform play, starting with Fable Legends.

<< LINK REMOVED >> They're offering upgrades for free to Windows 7 and 8(.1) users who aren't pirates as well. Still, this upgrade idea has me a little on edge.

Microsoft rose from the ashes of the nuclear fire. Their war to exterminate mankind has raged for decades, but the final battle would not be fought in the future it would be fought here, in our present. Tonight....

MS didn't get rich by giving away free copies of Windows. They still plan on getting rich from Windows 10 and that is what makes free so scary. They'll get their money one way or another. As long as you live in their world you're their btich.

<< LINK REMOVED >> "Windows Store"

Apple, Google and Amazon are making billions off their users, and not from sales of their opperating systems. Microsoft wants a peice of the pie. And since no one wanted to buy windows store (I mean, windows 8) they have now decided to repackage it and give it away for free.

I had a pirated copy of Windows XP Pro in high school and early college. But then I realized that I was an adult, with a job, and that I could afford to get nice things legally.

maybe if the price for a full install copy of windows over the years wasn't ridiculous people would not have pirated it. all mircosoft did was discourage people from building their own rigs for years even if you were building budget it was $200+ extra for the OS. Linux is still kicking and its free so $200+ is unnecessary

they also know that most pirated copies of windows have the store disabled so MS cant check the license

It seems too good to be true.. There have to be a catch! It sounds like they are moving toward a subscription service like Office 365. And when they do, I will revert to an older version (8.1) or switch to Mac.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Its strange that you consider Linux too complicated and than use it for web hosting. If you left off at the first sentence I would have assumed you're a basic user who doesn't know how to install an OS and the complicated statement would have made sense. But basic users don't do web hosting because that is too complicated and you do so this makes it perplexing.

"We believe customers over time will realize the value of properly licensing Windows and we will make it easy for them to move to legitimate copies." - So a. the O.S. is so good pirates will feel "guilty" Or b. the O.S. will have built in measures which block 'activator' key bypasses?

Curious.

Now I'm even more worried. I wonder at what cost this "free" upgrade will be available.

They are allowing you to have "Windows Store 10" for free, while still being able to charge every single manufacturer full price. It's so simple it's genius.

They're desperate to get their walled garden set-up with their app store, so its in their interest to get as many copies of win 10 out there as possible.

If it goes well, they may never sell a consumer copy of an OS again, and just use the revenue stream from the store and issue new versions as updates.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Exactly. No one wanted to buy Windows Store 8, so now they make it more like everyone's favorite win 7, and give it away for free. It is truly diabolical, and downright genius.

Yeah of course, you don't have to use the store, - but like the metro component of 8 - it will be there.
