Microsoft is extending its free Windows 10 upgrade offer even to those who pirated Windows 7 or Windows 8, executive Terry Myerson reveals in a new interview with Reuters.

No Caption Provided

"We are upgrading all qualified PCs, genuine and non-genuine, to Windows 10," he said.

A Microsoft representative later confirmed Myerson's comments, adding that the company hopes to "re-engage" with software pirates.

"Anyone with a qualified device can upgrade to Windows 10, including those with pirated copies of Windows," the representative told The Verge. "We believe customers over time will realize the value of properly licensing Windows and we will make it easy for them to move to legitimate copies."

As was previously announced, for the first twelve months following Windows 10's launch, PCs running Windows 7 and 8 will be eligible for a free upgrade to the new OS.

This week, Microsoft announced that Windows 10 will launch this summer, though the technology giant has not yet pinned down a specific release date. Microsoft also revealed that it's working with Chinese Internet giant Tencent to bring the massively popular MOBA League of Legends to Windows 10.

Windows 10 features a new Xbox gaming app, which will not require Xbox Live Gold. Meanwhile, another marquee gaming feature for Windows 10 is that it will allow Xbox One games to stream to PCs and tablets running the new OS. In addition, Windows 10 supports cross-platform play, starting with Fable Legends.

I wonder if people will finally stop complaining and accept that this version of Windows will be far better than the last. I see a lot of people holding huge grudges against Microsoft but for what reason. I can't find one.

I honestly can't wait for Windows 10. It brings great things for everyone, even gamers this time around.

However, after saying that I think they will finally get it right with windows 10

Yes 10 will be better than 8. It can't get worse than that POS.

This is great for all the people who suddenly have their Windows installation tell them that it's not genuine and they have to re-enter their product key, and they can't do so because the product key has worn off of the sticker on the bottom of their computer. Now they can be genuine without worrying about their damn product key.

I deal with it on a regular basis, sometimes due to file system errors, but usually because I have to reload a customer's computer due to a bad hard drive. If I can't read the old drive, and the sticker is worn, then they're f'ed, because I can't retrieve the product key.

I've also seen computers with legitimate product keys that don't work because the OEM decided to block them (it's usually HP).

Windows 8 computers contain the product keys in the BIOS now, so that's not a problem anymore.

Hohoo, pretty good move...my guesses are:

1. They'd like to get more potential clients for their app store

2. They will stop supporting win 7 soon altogether and they want their infrastructure with as many win 10s as possible...for marketing and technical reasons

lol...if they want it so much, why haven't they offered windows 8.1 upgrade to pirates too? :p Or the windows 7 to 8 upgrades?

For years they had no problems having XPs, 7s and 8s coexisting, but now they want a huge leap forward. And besides, if you look below in the comment section, you will see lots of suspicion and paranoia.

So save your condescension for other people

I don't know... I know there are people that enjoy the new look and functionality of Windows 8 and stuff, but I still don't really want to change from windows 7 since it works exactly as intended and is rarely a hassle to use. I wouldn't want to upgrade only to regret it. Why is it free? I doubt helping pirates get back on the 'right path' is the reason. Would they have offered it for free if the product was actually as good as Windows 7?

So.... if someone doesn't have a previous version of Windows, they can't get Win10 for free? If you have a pirated copy, you CAN get it for free?

Being that it's an "upgrade" I'm guessing that's how it's working. Guess those old pirated copies of Windows will be flying around the net in the near future.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Microsoft makes almost all it's money through corporations. That's why it must be so careful not to shut you down when it's fairly certain you have pirated software. They instead flash a warning asking employees to call them.

Imagine an entire corporation being shut out of it's computers because of a mistake.

You do realize that a pirated copy of windows is just a real copy of windows without a legitimate code typed in.

Lol, I feel everyone is paranoid and suspicious.

I think there are three reasons why it's free:

1. There was a huge amount of negativity surrounding Windows 8. This hurt MS's reputation, and they need the company to compensate Win 8 users and restore good faith.

2. People now have options. It used to be that your only options were to either use Windows, or you pay $3,000 for a Mac. Now, we have cheaper Macs, Android and iOS, Chrome OS, etc.. it's not a monopoly with no substitutes anymore.

3. The world is moving into the Android model of generating revenues through services. They will try to make money from movie sales, app sales, and the app store.

As for pirates, it's simple. The know they're not going to make any money from those people, so they're not really losing money anyway. Second, they can actually make money from pirates in the way described above. Third, they need to migrate as many people as possible to Windows 10. They don't want to keep supporting legacy operating systems.

This is good as there is a positive to offering it to pirates. Since most pirated copies are very rarely kept up to date, they help to keep viruses and malware spreading. By allowing those copies to be upgraded, they are also getting the latest updates helping prevent the spread of malicious programs (this includes DDOS attacks, which require many comprised computers). I'm sure Microsoft is doing it for ways to monetize from the pirates, but at least something good will come to everyone else.

That's not exactly true...most pirated copies are actually up to date, because Windows Update doesn't distinguish between pirated and non pirated copies...

The only ones not up to date are systems that have their updates turned off and they never ran it, or run it very rarely

Otherwise it's much better than 8, and better than 8.1.

No problems with games so far. They warn me to upgrade to windows xp but once I ignore that I've had no trouble..

I'm using 10 on my desktop right now. I prefer 8 for the most part (and I'm one of the few people who recognizes that 8 is superior to 7 in most ways). It's definitely not (currently) an improvement over 7 when it comes to the layout.

<< LINK REMOVED >> That depends, if Windows 10 is well-received enough, then some percentage of pirates might be willing to buy legitimate licenses if pushed to do so.

Whatever revenue that generates might outweigh the revenue from pirates who occasionally wander over to the Windows 10 app store and buy things.

I doubt there's a way for MS to really trap pirates in that walled garden, the door isn't going to close behind them, they'll still have the option of downgrading back to 7 or 8

Makes sense. They've billing this as "the last Windows" which means it's going to be more of a service platform. Selling a person an OS once doesn't compare to giving them the OS & taking monthly or annual sub dollars for Office, cloud storage and all sorts of other services.
