Free Resident Evil 7 DLC Chapter Arrives This Spring

Paid DLC is also on the way.

Not long after the game itself debuts, Capcom plans to offer a free piece of Resident Evil 7 DLC sometime this spring.

According to Japanese publication Famitsu (as translated by Gematsu), the DLC is called Not a Hero. It's described as a short story scenario separate from that of the main game's protagonist, Ethan. Further details were not revealed.

Capcom has already revealed other DLC for the game, including the preorder bonus Survival Pack that unlocks in-game items and an additional difficulty mode right from the start. A season pass is also on the way with additional, more meaningful content. A Steam page for it states two volumes of something called Banned Footage (which come to PS4 first) and another story episode are on the way, though specifics remains unknown.

Resident Evil 7 launches for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on January 24.

I dont get it, why the hate? Whats the difference between this and the hundreds of other season pass games this decade, including everyone's loved witcher 3 and what about paying for fake cash in everyone's loved GTA V, and what about Fallout 4 or rise of the tomb raider, battlefield 1, call of duty, and the hundreds of other season passes? Stop hating hypocrites.

@masscrack: Livestreamers who have gotten the game early have discovered the game doesn't end properly. That last bit of story DLC is the true final chapter.

@Barighm: "the game doesn't end properly" this could mean many things.

The demo hinted at multiple outcomes so maybe there are different endings with some feeling incomplete.

Perhaps there is an intentional ambiguous ending for a sequel?

Definitely possible dlc is the conclusion but if so hopefully it is the free dlc. And honestly I wouldn't hate this. With the way games get leaked, like you said with people already streaming the game, this could be a way for developers to prevent people from spoiling games pre-release. It's unlikely for dlc to leak early.

Edit: I also wouldnt be surprised if there is a day 1 patch to rectify the supposed abrupt ending. Again think about the demo. It went through various stages where the initial demo's conclusion is much different than the final demo's conclusion. Could be another way of combating prerelease leaks and spoilers.

Sounds like so much is being held back. Might as well wait for a GOTY release.

@Dumper1: Capscum copying Bungie with their sell their game in bits and pieces but still charge full RRP for the disc, talk about a rip-off, I'll give this one a pass.

@sticktaler36: Never said Bungie were the ones to do it first but they certainly made a very hot trend of it with selling a game with such little content then asking for £30-40 more to get stuff that should come with disc.

Then when they get rid of that module look at how bad the Taken King was, literally a whole year with fxck all content to work with the first few months were good but boy did it get old, I give credit for Destiny first year but I don't give them credit for charging £80 in total to experience it all.

@sticktaler36: Actually, you're not getting the full game. People who have gotten it early and livestreamed have shown the game ends abruptly without a proper conclusion. That bit of story DLC will be the actual final chapter.

That's what I've been told anyway.

@Barighm: Yeah and after the first viewing of BvS people were on social media making claims that it was the best superhero movie ever. Can't always believe everything you hear.

Not saying you are wrong, it certainly wouldn't surprise me, but you can't always trust everything you see and hear.

@aross2004: Well Alan Wake did it.

On the other hand for horror movies/games/plays in general it's often a thematic choice to end abruptly, so it might not be that bad if Ethan gets out of the mansion only to see that there are only monsters there now. Especially if there are bad and good endings involved

@Dumper1:

Pretty much my same thoughts on the subject. Wait for reviews and whatnot, it'll be $20 eventually, it's not like I don't have quite a few other games to take care of / catch up on in the meantime.

Capcom really takes the success of this version of Resident Evil seriously!

The marketting is great for it and I do think it'll be the biggest RE success since RE2.

They took care to release a GREAT demo which showcase good elements but is NOT part of the game so we don't spoil a part of the main game!

There's good Ad campaign all over, they planned a first free DLC to show people and tease them into their season pass to get more, everything is there!

Is the good old Capcom back again after all this time?

@silv3rst0rm: I doubt it, they seem to have rebranded themselves as a purveyor of DLC to nickel and dime their consumers to death.

If you remember RE2, you remember there were secrets, modes, and costumes you didn't have to pay for in order to unlock, it was assumed that once a customer bought the game they were entitled to the full experience.

@maltnut: I mean, was DLC even a thing when RE2 was released?

Keep in mind that the demo for RE7 did have a handful of secrets to uncover, some of which will provide you with unique in-game items at the time of release, so if they were to keep that going in the main game, which I don't see why they wouldn't, you can expect to have a good amount of unlockable goodies. Not to say that there won't be microtransactions, but they could be limited to only aesthetics. And judging from the article, the DLC that is coming is separate from the main story, not anything that was held back from the main campaign.

I myself enjoyed the hell out of the demo, and am more than willing to give them a shot again.

@sticktaler36: The price is a little outdated, and publishers definitely feel the same (they think we should be paying $90; think it's a coincidence that DLC/Passes tend to add up to about $90 - $100?); however, it doesn't matte because Steam sales bring the prices way down real quick, so people expect THE DISCOUNT numbers to be the true "real" price.

Doesn't matter to me, though. As far as I'm concerned, games like Gears looked great and played amazingly, so there is no need for games with $100 million budgets.

@silv3rst0rm: Capcom has always been great! Founded in 1979, and doing their thing at a very high level since the early 80's when the video game industry badly needed it, that type of longevity is no fluke...true staying power!! They were legendary (with Street Fighter, Mega Man, Final Fight etc.) before many of todays top video game devs were even a thought. I get that there have been highs & lows with Capcom games, but that's life...coming back time-and-time-and-time again is the key and they've ALWAYS found a way.

RE7 is gunna be a SMASH!...and I agree with u it'll be like the legendary RE2 release of 1998. I remember it very well bcuz I bought it on the first day it came out and it delivered on every level possible, what a game & time that was! :D :D :D

@markey4eva: Sorry, but I can't share your optimism, at least not with that logic. Current talent and policy dictates success more than reputation, and Capcom was great when they had top talent and a habit for creating the best action games. A lot of that talent is gone now, and they're struggling financially despite still releasing some good games every now and again. They're trying to play the DLC fest card, but their way of doing it feels more intrusive than what the rest of the industry is doing.

Hard to say about RE7's success. It's been well hyped, but keep in mind Capcom is trying to create a franchise with CoD levels of success and this is still a horror game, so anything less than 10 million units sold will likely be considered a failure to them.

@Barighm: Nah man Capcom's only mistep with DLC is with SFV. CoD success is in a class of its own, like GTA & Halo etc. Capcom doesn't aim for the numbers those franchises rack up. They know what audience RE appeals to and they listen to their loyal RE fans. They simply do enough when it matters most. RE5 which released in 2009, is to this day not only the best selling RE of all time, but also the best selling Capcom game of all time...pretty good considering that RE was 13yrs old when RE5 dropped.

And back when people were complaining that RE was played out & getting stale with too many zombie entries, Capcom flipped the script and gifted us with the legendary RE4...a genius move! RE7 will do better than good you'll see, a sure success! The script is about to be flipped once again when it matters most bcuz people these days are complaining all over the place that RE has become too action heavy...just like the complaining going on pre-RE4.

My point is simple. The RE franchise would not be in it's 21st year of existence if 1. it didn't sell well enough, and 2. if it didn't have a VERY talented crew working on it. Yes you're right that some of Capcom's talent is no longer there, but that's natural after 37+ years in the business. RE7 will remind us all that "enough" of Capcom's talent remains intact to put out AAA horror masterpieces like no other, and to be relevant in such a competitive business as the gaming industry.

We all know RE definitely needs a a successful reinvention. On Jan 24th watch the reinvention happen again!...when it matters most.
