Now Playing: GS News Update: Free Battle Royale Game Coming From LawBreakers Dev

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

Boss Key Productions, the studio founded by Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski and developer of LawBreakers, has revealed Radical Heights, a "free *X-TREME Early Access* battle royale shooter," and it's out now on Steam Early Access.

Like most battle royale games, Radical Heights tasks contestants with surviving against other players, but adds its own twist on the formula by inviting players to use vehicles to give themselves the advantage. On top of that, you can collect cash and deposit it in the bank, to use later on regardless of whether you win or lose the match.

"Partake in high-stakes battle royale gunplay in a sunny SoCal dome as contestants drive-by on BMX bikes or stalk other contestants from the shadows in search for weapons and prizes," reads the game's Steam page. "But also cash that you can bank--win or lose! Whether you spend that cash on righteous customization in your personal prize room or pull it from an ATM to purchase weapons early in the next game--building a wealth of cash is as important as taking down the competition in this irreverent 80s-themed action game show where everyone wants to be rich and famous."

According to Boss Key, it has "some really unique twists we want to put in the Battle Royale genre," so launching in Early Access is its way to "share those high level ideas with our community quickly." The studio plans to have Radical Heights in Early Access "for about a year."

"This gives us time to solidify the foundation of the game with our community, build out additional features, and develop a solid understanding of what works, what doesn't, and flesh out a full release content plan based on what we think is right for the game," it explained.

Looking ahead, Boss Key plans to introduce "new weapons, gadgets, customization, vehicles, game show events, game modes, and eventually a Daily/Weekly Challenges system."

On April 5, Boss Key production addressed the current state of LawBreakers, admitting that it had "failed to find enough of an audience to generate the funds necessary to keep it sustaine in the manner [it] had originally planned for and anticipated." Regardless of this, the studio indicated it was committed to giving the game "the second life it deserves." Alongside evolving LawBreakers, Boss Key said it was working on something new, which evidently is Radical Heights.

LawBreakers publisher Nexon said in an earnings report that some of the game's struggles may have been at least partially due to the overwhelming success of PUBG, one of the most popular titles in the battle royale genre.

"The timing of its launch turned out to be unfortunate, specifically the blockbuster PC online game PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds came out right about the same time, making the market environment very tough for first-person shooters in general and for LawBreakers," the company said.

ive watched some gameplay, this has clearly been rushed past a basic prototype to release and classed as early access.

im giving this a thumbs up. it has missing textures on some buildings and plenty of glitches but the gameplay is fun. the humor is good and its a cross between smash tv/running man.

and the bmx bikes and ramps in the lobby area.

So if this fails, will they say they couldn't overcome the popularity of Fortnite or whatever comes in between?

I bought Lawbreakers and I actually enjoyed it.

But making an appeal the other day to the customers who bought Lawbreakers saying that while support will be continued for Lawbreakers they are focusing on other efforts and new ventures....to spit out a Battle Royale game just because it's what is hot is kind of disrespectful.

Lawbreakers going FTP may have increased the population but now it's obvious where their focus is.

So, um, dude... Bro.

We need to talk.

Remember how last time, you showed up late to the party, but still all gung-ho and trash-talking like Daikatana 2 or something? Yeah, that.

This immediately comes off as "that, again."

(Guess we're just not gonna bother with shadows or lighting, etc, "because 80s.")

<sigh>... Well, I'll install it and post feedback on your forums, like last time. For old times' sake and whatnot... But don't expect me to pay for your Uber ride home this time.

@Pyrosa: You are confused, Cliffy had nothing to do with Daikatana...that was John Romero of Doom/Quake fame (not Unreal). You aren't even at the right party dude!!!! LMFAO!

Are you bankrupt and you have a severe lack of ideas and innovation for the gaming industry? Just develop a battle royal game! You can launch it for free because you can get your money on cosmetics microtransaction! -_-

If anything, after watching the trailer I am less excited to try it out than I was when i clicked on the article. good thing its going to be free to play, because i doubt anyone would pay up front for that. I get the need to rush to market while there are still only a few battle royales because the genre will probably be saturated by the end of the year, but seriously this looks EARLY access. Whoever made that trailer isn't doing the game any favors.

Cliff Bleszinski doesn’t want to admit he can’t create original content, but he can’t. He got lucky with gears of war and kept riding that. Then he saw overwatch and said “I can make that.”

He just hops on bandwagons. Such an overrated developer.

I mean I have nothing against companies making games in genres that are already being done. Competition and innovating on existing ideas are all well and good after all. But first LawBreakers and now this. It just seems like the company doesn't know how to do anything but jump on bandwagons.

lol...

I read this article in that 90s kids commercial SoCal skater's voice that was trying to sell you the latest toy, with the over use of buzz words like "righteous" and "radical"

I hope if you get like a multikill or something like that in the game the announcer goes "GNARLY DUDE!"

Remember when World of Warcraft came out and monopolized the MMO market? Remember when every other company immediately tried to make their own "WoW Killer" MMO, and all of them failed completely resulting in the deaths of numerous studios and a graveyard of dead games? And all those companies were too stupid to understand that once something new is explosively popular and establishes a genre, you can't just throw your "Me too" game into the ring and expect it to succeed?

Oh look, it's happening again.

Lol, otherwise, agreed. These companies need something to differentiate themselves. Can't say if the retro and bikes theme will be that difference.....

@m4a5: It worked with Fortnite because Fortnite was very fast to the party (they basically pivoted an existing game instead of making a new one from the ground up so they got it to market much much faster than any of the now-announced copycats) and Fortnite, unlike Pubg, was free, so it sucked in all the people who didn't want to pay for an early access game.

It's too late for anyone else now. It's a 2 party system for battle royale games.

ROFL! This company never meets a trend they don't like. They should switch to Me Too Games. All they do is copy trends and create an inferior version. I hear their super secret project is a competitve card game based on the 90's Friends sitcom. Early access soon!

I saw this coming from a mile away and it hit the person behind me. He's just following trends and maybe he's just late to the party. If you pull up a search bar I can guarantee that you can find a lot of battle royal type of games already out, early access or close to releasing. Whatever happens I'm pretty sure Epic Games will take him back.
