Forza Horizon Dev's New Game Sounds Completely Different

And now for something completely different.

Playground Games, the independent UK studio behind the Forza Horizon racing series, is starting a new project that sounds pretty much completely different. Playground has now confirmed that it is working on a AAA open-world action role-playing game.

Development on this project is being done out of a new 17,365 square-foot studio space that Playground recently purchased in Leamington Spa near its original studio. The game developer will refurbish the space and work out of its first two floors.

No Caption Provided

According to GI.biz, Playground hired Star Wars: Battlefront II senior producer Sean Eyestone to become the team's production director on the new game. Before DICE, Eyestone worked at Kojima Productions for more than five years, contributing to titles like Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and Ground Zeroes.

Some of the other new hires at Playground include Will Kennedy (former designer for GTA V studio Rockstar North) and Juan Fernandez di Simon (senior designer on Ninja Theory's Hellblade). The developer's jobs site lists a number of other open positions for the open-world RPG, including creative director and narrative director.

According to GI.biz, Playground's new office will house more than 200 people who will work exclusively on the new RPG. This will bring the company's total headcount to more than 400, making it one of the bigger development studios in the UK and world.

Playground created the Forza Horizon series, which debuted in 2012 for Xbox 360. The studio also made 2014's Forza Horizon 2 and 2016's Forza Horizon 3. No release date has been set for Playground's new RPG, nor do we know anything about it.

They dropped the ball with FH3. I think some time must past before FH4, that's for sure. But hiring A PRODUCDER... to kick things off - meaning Playground Games doesn't have own vision for this next project. Meaning - > just another service-product-game.

@g4m1ngon: Explain how they dropped the ball with FH3.

If you would have said T10 and FM7, I'd agree.

@leblnk: FH3 smells like DiRT3 from first minutes - voices are annoying. Game says "go do things, entertain yourself" instead of magic that FH2 did to me - like its hypnosis intro, game gave me WOW moments like on count. World is bald and flat in FH3 vs. FH2. Childish DLC's. Direction is absolutely all over the place. Well.. this is my thought, and this is why me and mates didn't bought FH3 this time.

@nsignific Yeah, FH4 is not scheduled for launch yet.

FH3 was released just a year ago so it's better to delay FH4 a little longer. But honestly, more than FH4, I am looking forward to this open-world RPG. I LOVE open-world games!

BTW Destiny 2's next update is just around the corner!

I guess no FH4 on schedule, then? Not really complaining, maybe the series needs a break.

I wonder if Playground is one of the studios that MS is targeting as a potential purchase in order to increase 1st party output

@pspearman: I hope rather than buying studios they will cultivate them and prove that they can still foster game development from within, because so far it looks like EA in slow mo

@girlusocrazy: They did say they planned to open more themselves, that only gets you so far though. Even Sony bought the vast majority of their studios.

I must be the only one willing to take a educated guess here so I just call it now that this game is a Fable reboot.

It's going to be a High Fantasy open world action RPG with some online multiplayer element.

Obviously it will be a Xbox exclusive.

@oneligas: Playground isn't owned by Microsoft so they're free to make it multiplatform if they wish to.

@derangel: Yet, all of Playground games are only the Forza Horizon series (only on Xbox) and the timing of when they started working on this project was not too long after Lionhead Studios shutdown. But really Phil Spencer would have to be asleep at the wheel if this game isn't an Xbox exclusive.

@oneligas: I wouldn't be surprised if MS decided to publish and fund the game for Playground, but that all depends on what Playground wants to do. If Playground decided they wanted to make it for more than just MS platforms then there isn't much MS can do outside of offer more money.

@oneligas: That's because Microsoft outsourced Forza Horizon to them. That doesn't mean they automatically have a preference to develop for Xbox, it just means MS owns the IP and doesn't want it on competitor systems. Sony could just as easily outsource one of their exclusives to this studio.

@domiddian: In the video game business there aren't a lot of developers who make one exclusive series (Playground has only ever made Forza Horizon games) and then make their next major game multiplatform without sullying the existing business arrangement around that exclusivity and right now the unofficial rumors say FH4 (in Japan) is coming in 2018.

@domiddian: lol...it will be an X exclusive....no question at all....they likely won't explicitly say it until we know more and people start to get interested....that's marketing 101....get the non-X users interested by not telling them it's an X-exclusive and then when their interest is high.....reel 'em in.

@Daelusca: No, that is not how it works at all. They're not talking platforms because they haven't even announced the game yet. All they've said is that they're working on a game and hiring for it.

@Daelusca: Nah, I don't think so. If they don't have any ties to Microsoft, I can't see them shutting out two thirds of the console market. Helluva lot of juicy profits to be had there. That's business 101.

@Daelusca: Microsoft only pay their bills whilst they are producing the Forza Horizon series and only for the Forza Horizon series. This new game is their own IP. I tell you what, when this games gets announced across multiple platforms, I'll be sure to come back to this article and take a giant shit in your hat :-D

@Daelusca: So as a builder, someone might contract me to build an extension on their house. They pay me for it, which allows me to cover my costs, pay my bills and generate profit. What I do with that money after I have been paid is not the homeowners business. It doesn't stop me from using that capital to go and build an extension on someone else's house. As I said, Microsoft pay this dev for Forza Horizon, what this dev does outside of Forza Horizon is not Microsoft's business.

Now, please... Go learn how outsourcing works.

@domiddian: lol....you're talking to me about business....that's amusing :) If someone pays 100% of your revenue, you are basically their employee...call yourself a consultant all you want....1 source of income = employee. This is def an X exclusive....and even you might be coming to understand that....or that dense is really, well, dense :)

@Daelusca: Go look at Insomniac Games before 2012. An independent dev who produced exclusively for Playstation consoles (in other words had 100% of their revenue paid by Sony) and yet still went and made multi-platform games.

You hear that? It's the sound of your argument falling apart.

@domiddian: Sweet lord you are dunce.....a quick search....Insomniac's first game was made for something called a Panasonic 3DO...exclusively....the system was a failure, the game was a failure....the company almost went bankrupt....they switched over to create for Playstation....follow along l'il fella as we are now up to developing games for multiple consoles, which you said above they did not do....is that fake news or you just don't do research before posting? Sony threw them a lifeline....back when it was only Sony and Nintendo......X did not exist yet.....and Sony owned all the IPs....Insomniac had no money to dev/ own there own IP, so Sony bankrolled them and bought all their IPs....as soon as the had the money, they went...and X didn't poach their IP. MS is pretty good like that....but all this underscores the whole point....if you CANNOT bankroll yourself, you need a pubs money......and I am betting, with money you don't have, that MS is the bankroll....

First of all, don't assume you know the first thing about me. Second, you just admitted that you don't know for sure that MS is bank rolling this project.

Numb nuts, LMAO.

@domiddian: lol.....one of the distinctions between intelligent people and the masses is that yes, by your writings I definitely "know the first thing about" you......most definitely....you can generally tell education level, maybe even field of study......general understanding of age, type of "career", rough income levels as well as an idea of net worth.....do I know if you like Big Macs or Whoppers, no; but the more important stuff is def there.

@Daelusca: In all my years on this site, I don’t think I have ever come across such a first-class-fúck-you-stupid-moron as you.

Your initial argument: MS pays “100% of Playgrounds bills” so this game will be exclusive to Xbox.

My argument: Sony were “paying 100% of Insomniac’s bills” up until 2012 and yet Insomniac still made multi-platform games for other systems later on.

Whether they were third party before and produced something for the 3DO is completely irrelevant. Panasonic were not still “paying their bills” during their exclusivity towards Sony systems.

You do know Playground games is an independent developer--just like Insomniac--right? They can go multi-platform if they wish. They are not tied to Microsoft in the same way that Insomniac are not tied to Sony.

You are literally too fucking dumb to debate this with.

@domiddian: lol.....what I can guarantee is that nowhere in your life have you ever formally "debated" anyone....not a skill you possess. What I said throughout is that if the indi has no bankroll they will need a pub to make a AAA or anything close.....why Insomniac had to sell all their IPs to Sony for 15 years until they got enough bank to make the games they wanted to make....tthis game will be an exclusive....iif you can't afford an X, I could start a crowdfund for you.....all gamers should own all consoles....even the po' ones :)
