Forza Horizon 3, the newest entry in Microsoft's long-running racing series, has sold more than 2.5 million copies, the company announced today.

In an Xbox Wire post, Microsoft added that, as of December 2016, the entire Forza franchise passed $1 billion in retail sales. This is a big number, but it is nowhere near Microsoft's Halo series, which has pulled in more than $5 billion in revenue as of November 2015.

Microsoft shared a number of other Forza stats for 2016. First, more than 14 million people were "involved in the Forza community" on Xbox One and Windows 10 during the year. Additionally, Microsoft claims the Forza series--spanning Forza 5, Forza 6, and Forza Horizon 3--is the best-selling racing series for this generation of consoles. Finally, Microsoft said more than three million people joined the Forza "online racing community" every month.

Microsoft ended its note by teasing that the company "can't wait for you to see what 2017 will bring." That might be a reference to Forza 7, which was unofficially revealed at the end of 2016.

Forza Horizon 3 was released for Xbox One and PC, which was a first for the racing series. Looking ahead, all future mainline Forza games will be made for console and PC.
