Fortnite Is Leaving Early Access But Save The World Won't Be Free

The original Fortnite mode is keeping its premium price tag.

Fans have been waiting for Fortnite: Save The World to become free-to-play like its battle royale counterpart for years. Epic Games has said that it would come soon at multiple points, but now we know it's not happening as all Fortnite modes finally exit Early Access.

"Today we’re bringing Save the World out of Early Access and have decided that it will remain a premium experience rather than going free-to-play," Epic Games said in a post on their official site. "Development of new content will slow down after this official release, but the adventure doesn’t end here for Save the World."

Epic Games went on to say that the Early Access label will be removed from the battle royale and creative game modes in Fortnite as well. Save the World, Fortnite's horde mode that came before the incredibly popular battle royale, will no longer support new cosmetics from the battle royale mode starting sometime in the "coming months" according to Epic.

The North Carolina-based developer also announced a new seasonal structure for Save the World called ventures. They are new "season-long excursions that take place in a seasonal zone with new and unique modifiers to tackle." The post was light on specific details but it seems like Save the World is getting another progression system that's separate from other Fortnite modes.

Save the World's narrative events will also be separate from the battle royale mode in the future.

"Conquering the challenges in Ventures will earn you seasonal experience which impacts the level of difficulty you encounter, weapons you find, and the seasonal rewards that you earn," the studio wrote. "Reaching higher seasonal Ventures levels unlocks Supercharger materials that can raise the level of items in your main collection -- beyond their current cap."

Fortnite players have been waiting for Save the World to become free-to-play since 2018 but that's no longer the case. Fans will have to stick with the shooter's free content or spend $20 on a new bundle for access to the mode horde action.
