Former Sega employee reveals Sega Pluto prototype

Unreleased machine is a Sega Saturn with Netlink modem built into the device; still in working order.

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

An alleged former Sega employee under the online handle "Super Magnetic" has posted pictures of an unreleased Sega console on the Assembler Games forum.

The post states that the device is called the Sega Pluto, which is a Sega Saturn console with a Netlink modem built into the system. The system weighs in at 2.8kg and has two controller ports, a flip-top drive bay, and a cart slot. The machine has the Sega Saturn logo on top of it, which could infer that the device was to be marketed as a new SKU for the Sega Saturn.

According to the forum member, there are only two known prototypes of the hardware in existence. The device the forum member is currently holding is in working order and can play NTSC US Sega Saturn games. The Netlink modem was compatible with a number of Sega Saturn titles like Saturn Bomberman and Virtual-On.

The saddest thing about this is that Sega had such a ridiculous fanbase at the time and unlike Sony, they had a solid identity as a game designer not just hardware company, much like Nintendo. They managed to take many more chances than Nintendo but somehow managed to make all the wrong moves at all the wrong times. I felt their brilliance to be WAY beyond Nintendo's (Miyamoto being the exception there, even Sega couldn't trump him). Microsoft, from a hardware standpoint sort of filled Sega's void but not quite in the way that they should have. I wonder what would have happened had they made a few of their decisions differently (i.e. not adding a better color palette to the Mega/Sega CD, releasing the 32x rather than just having fans wait for Saturn, not releasing the Saturn 4 months early and screwing over retailers, et al)

What I would give to have Sega take the place of Microsoft next-gen.. We really all should have bought Dreamcasts.. Screw EA.

@Shewgenja It still bugs me that DC was the most successful video game console launch in history to that point and STILL managed to remain an underdog and took less time than the Saturn to be abandoned. If many people had gotten to play it as I was lucky enough to have experienced it, maybe it would have had the support that the PS2 got.

@MaskRisen So, let's see, you want Sega to bring back a machine they announced they were discontinuing making games for 12 years ago? Wouldn't you rather they produced something new that could recapture their previous glory? :)

@OldKye @topherlee94 @MaskRisen Ok point taken. I really loved my DC. I just think that gaming has evolved so much since then. We can now download games more advanced than DC stuff some of which are HD versions of DC games.

Haha, I actually got a Saturn a little while ago. All the guy needs is to get an Action Replay so he can break the region lock.

@dalua360 @Saketume Sega has a long history of releasing hardware that's well before it's time... and also before anyone wants to buy it lol.

Take the Sega Game Gear for example it came out with the first Gameboy(the one that had blurred black and white graphics and needed 6 battery's). The Sega Game Gear had full color and the same graphics as their full sized system but they just couldn't sell the thing.

So basically everything Sega made is cool but buggy and not well sold and people like to collect/gawk at it since it's out of the consul business now.(it's kinda like finding a steam car made by ford or something)

@Killer6b9 Considering they grossly mis-manage their software titles, I wouldn't hold out much hope for any Sega console succeeding in today's market.

Longing for the glory days never got anyone anywhere.

I used to own a modded Saturn (played North American and Japanese titles) and I really got a ton of play out of that console.. easily spent hundreds of hours on Virtua Fighter 2, not to mention countless other hours spent playing the other games.

That Pluto is going to be worth a damn fortune one day, if it isn't already.

Even better I wish they would come out with a Sega Legacy console that could play Genesis, 32x, Sega CD, Saturn, Dreamcast, and then Just BluRay and DVD for good measure all with an HDMI our and high speed Broadband modem. just a dream.

@PlayStation4k Part of me thinks the same but then I realize how far gaming has evolved since. That genie cannot be placed back in its bottle either. IMHO Sega should instead mine their legacy as third party content and enhance their older titles on existing hardware, as well as take chances to create new IPs. Looks to me like they are taking some queues from Capcom on remaking Castle of Illusion. Everything I loved about my Saturn has oddly enough, been surpassed by my X-Boxes. I'd rather get their best regardless of the hardware its on and not have to choose between them and Nintendo, Sony or MS.

I wish the companies would re-release them as collector editions just like they came back in the day. I'd re-buy a Saturn, Genesis with Sega CD and 32X, and Dreamcast. It'd be fun to have a brand new version to get me a few more years out of them.

Dude! I want one! My Saturn is still is in working order, but it's burned through a memory cart and the disc drive bay is starting to act funky. Then again, can I count on my xbox + ps3 to work 15 years from now though? Not likely

@Tzap 15 years from now, both your Xbox and PS3 will be broken and unusable, meanwhile the Sega consoles from 15 years ago will still be in good shape.

Hmm do they have batteries in them? Leaking internal clock batteries has been the death of many old motherboards. Maybe I should check on my Dreamcast and PS2.

SEGA has also developed their own version of UMD called "POD" "Portable Orbi Disc" disc. The format will act as the ROMs for most RingWide/Sega Pod retail games. They use the redbooking of HDDVD and GD-ROM.

The discs will carry 32GBs single layer and 64GB dual layer.

Due to lower budgets and lower development costs, games will retail for $30-45(built in DLC wil vary).

The hybrid's main CPU will like Saturn and Dreamcast before, RISC SH ARM32 based. The SH-12 "Sakura" is produced in house in Japan by Hitachi/Renasas. Due to the 2011 Tsunami, the SH-12's first prototype CPU suffered a minor shortage in Early 2012. The CPU is similar to Intel Power i7 Sandy Bridge E, but budgetary and lower cost, lower wattage and lower fabrication and will use 16GBs of GDDR4. RingEdge 2 is ARM64 based with 6 cores and uses 12GBs of GDDR5 RAM.

The main GPU will be closer to that in power and performance to the Nvidia GeForce 580 GTX.

RingEdge 2's main GPU is a dual GeForce 580 which is designed to run similar to a maxed out 640 GTX. The main difference between Sega Pod/Ring Wide and RE2 is that the tablet console will average the graphical performance of a 560 GTX.

The Dreamcast was just too advanced for the times, and now a days, that's what people want. I too wish Sega would once again join the console market. I'm sure whatever they'd present would be much better than the what I've seen and heard so far.

@atlanticmoon Not just the Dreamcast, but all of their consoles were advanced. Look at the Game Gear. It took Nintendo until 2003 with the GBA SP before they finally caught up to the technology. They had the Nomad, which allowed you to play Genesis games on the go, basically what Sony is now doing with the Vita.

I miss Sega consoles, I would really get a new Sega console if they released one, if only their games were as good as they used to be.
