Former Epic Games producer opening 2K studio

Rod Fergusson launching Bay Area studio for 2K Games with an "exciting project."

Former Epic Games producer Rod Fergusson, who most recently joined the 2K Games-owned Irrational Games to help finish March's BioShock: Infinite, is launching a new 2K studio, he announced today on Twitter.

Fergusson's studio will be the second non-sports game outfit that 2K Games operates in the area. 2K Marin, which released The Bureau: XCOM Declassified in August, is based in Novato, California.

It is not clear what the announcement of Fergusson's new studio means, if anything, for 2K Marin.

A representative for the publisher told GameSpot, "We are happy to confirm that Rod is heading up a new development studio, but alas, we have no further announcements to share at this time."

NBA 2K series developer Visual Concepts, a division of 2K Sports, is also based on Novato, California.

Fergusson left Irrational Games in April, weeks after BioShock Infinite was released, saying at the time that he was "looking forward to the next chapter in my life and career."

Good for him. I hope this "exciting new project" is another System Shock. Anything that 2K Marin makes is high-quality... except for The Bureau: XCOM Declassified. That game both shocked the hell out of me (quality-wise) and made me cringe.

I wonder what the future will be for 2k Marin. The bureau has failed, but it is hardly a supris, given how many years in development it has been, and how many times the core concept has been changed. Also, if articles are to be believed the final result is partly 2k game fault,. for a lot of time and resources was wasted due to not enough supervision and poorly organised work.

Will 2k Marin get another chance? Even if it does, probably it won't be a chance with Xcom franchise.

man how depressing. one of my favorite franchises gears of war has gone too crap. it seems that every big developer that worked on it is gone. How sad I will miss gears it was so unique and fun and took alot of skill compared to other games

@Paul2005

Yeah, everyone jumped ship and then it gets handed to another studio. A lot of good franchises have been doing that recently, it's a shame.

Let's just hope people like Rod are able to make new games that are as good.

That statue of Booker DeWitt looks more like a 50's-60's movie star (Cary Grant for example) than the box cover, which more resembles a Nathan Drake/Matthew Fox combo. I like them both (they're both well made and generic in a way), just couldn't avoid remarking about the difference in appearance.

Excellent comparison, I was sure it looked like somebody. Yes, Cary Grant seems to be an obvious inspiration for this statue.

Funny how this guy was able to quickly find work after Leaving Epic games, but Cliff Bleszinski is still in limbo.

@ChiefFreeman Geez. She looks fine save for the occasional over use of eyeliner that nearly every girl makes the mistake of from time to time.

@Gamerno6666 Why would 2K purchase the System Shock brand when the Bioshock brand they made is more profitable? But I do hope for a futuristic Looking Glass style game.

@Gamerno6666 Made by (lightning) Rod Ferguson? That *would* be an (electric) shock.
