E3 2014: Sony Confirms First Original TV Show for PlayStation
[UPDATE] Sony confirms hour-long drama "Powers," based on the graphic novel.
[UPDATE] Tonight during Sony's E3 press conference, Sony confirmed that the upcoming Powers TV show will debut on PlayStation platforms this December. Production on the series is currently underway, though casting details were not made available. Every PSN user in the United States can watch the first episode for free, while PS Plus subscribers can see the entire series without paying anything extra.
The original story is below.
At E3 2013 last summer, Sony announced that Sony Pictures was developing original programming for PlayStation, though it wasn't clear what form this would take. Now, Deadline reports that the first show developed for PlayStation consoles is an hour-long drama called Powers.
Based on the graphic novel by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming, Powers has been gestating for a long time now, Deadline says. It's even been through several incarnations at Sons of Anarchy network FX.
Powers combines the genres of superhero fantasy, crime noir, and police procedural and is said to span around 10 episodes. The people that make up the world have superhuman abilities and "all of those powers are just another catalyst for mayhem and murder."
More specifically, Powers follows detective Christian Walker, who is charged with protecting humans and investigating cases involving super-human men and women known as "powers."
A launch date for Powers was not announced. Deadline describes the series as "of premium cable quality."
Meanwhile, Sony competitor Microsoft is currently working on multiple shows for Xbox, including a Halo program produced by Steven Spielberg and a documentary series about Atari's famously failed video game E.T. The Extra Terrestrial.
Microsoft is also working on a tie-in show for Xbox One game Quantum Break and a show based on this summer's World Cup.
