Free-to-play video game studio Kabam today released a brand new Lord of the Rings game called Legends of Middle-earth. The role-playing and character collection game is available today to download for free through iTunes and Google Play.

You begin your journey In Legends of Middle-earth by choosing to play as a Dwarf, Elf, Human, or Hobbit. The wise wizard Gandalf (really, who else?) guides you through the tutorial, which only takes a few minutes to complete.

After that, you set out on a quest where you'll team up with characters from across the Lord of the Rings universe such as Aragorn, Boromir, Legolas, and Frodo to help you "annihilate forces of evil." Every character (there are more than 100 in all) has its own unique abilities, meaning players will need to make calculated decisions before they head into battle.

Legends of Middle-earth's 3D visuals are better than I expected, and you'll even get to visit places like Rohan, Gondor, and Mordor through upcoming expansion packs.

Since it's a free-to-play game, Legends of Middle-earth has microtransactions. Currency comes in the form of Mithril, and you can buy allotments for anywhere from $5 to $100. You can spend this currency on a range of things, including Ent-draughts (restores energy) and Lembas Bread (restores stamina), among others.

Legends of Middle-earth is Kabam's third Lord of the Rings game, following The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-earth and The Hobbit: Armies of the Third Age.

If you're looking for a Lord of the Rings console game, the newest one is Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, which was generally well-received upon release late last month.
