First Wave of Xbox One/PC Cross-Buy Limited to In-Game Items, DLC

"We will continue to listen to our fans and evaluate what's best for each individual game."

Earlier this year, Microsoft announced a new cross-buy feature for Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs. At the time, it was believed that it would work similarly to what we've seen elsewhere, including PlayStation systems, where you could get access to full games across multiple devices. But now, Microsoft has confirmed that cross-buy for Xbox One/PC is limited--for now at least--to in-game items and DLC.

"Cross-buy for games like Fable Legends and Gigantic refers to in-game purchases and downloadable content that can be accessed whether you are playing on Xbox One or Windows 10," a Microsoft representative said in a statement to GameSpot, first reported on by Kotaku.

Looking to the future, Microsoft stressed that all cross-buy plans will be formulated on a game-by-game basis.

"As we bring more titles to Windows 10 and Xbox One and enable rich cross-device scenarios, we will continue to listen to our fans and evaluate what's best for each individual game."

The Xbox One/PC cross-buy feature was announced at the Game Developers Conference in March. It is made possible by way of Microsoft's Windows Universal App Platform. To demonstrate how easy this is to use, Microsoft said Shovel Knight developer Yacht Club Games was able to port the game to Xbox One in a single day using the platform.

With Windows 10's launch last week, Microsoft took things further in the PC gaming space. The operating system features an all-new Xbox gaming app and allows for Xbox One-to-PC streaming. Windows 10 also has Cortana integration and a new browser called Edge.

These are just some of the changes; be sure to read CNET's full review for everything you need to know.

Until you make native pc versions, we've got nothing to talk about.

Sincerely,

A PC gamer.

(Of course I mean the main line franchises, don't even start with me about Fable)

Nope but love how you assume. But the differences are negligible, that and for some reason only you PC snobs seem to notice and nit-pick about. But you keep paying 7 times more to game on a platform that lasts half as long.

@lithus: PC is aready at 2k and 4k resolution so by the time consoles hiy 1080P 60 fps and render as details as PC. Pc will be playing at 8k resolution. So yes dream on peasant. Also the only game you can't tell the difference between consoles and PC at same resolution is due to shitty consoles port instead maximize for PC. Sony and Microsoft purposely paid DEV team to do this to push sales of consoles. Go and google it.

I have ps4 and Xbox One also.

1st off, you don't own both consoles or you wouldn't be calling anyone a peasant. That's old PC snob rhetoric. Lastly, not every PC gamer is capable of running at those resolutions. Nice try tho.

@charlievo: If you own both consoles you shouldn't be name calling then. You should know the value and worth of consoles, just because someone doesn't go out and spend 1k+ to game doesn't mean they are considered peasants; such a stupid immature word young people use to show their so called value in today's society.

@tyronefonsworth:

Um no. GS did a recent test with Farcry 4. They had the 3 platforms set up to see if gamers could tell the difference between a PS4, an X1 and the "mighty PC". Guess what...67% guessed wrong. Heck, law of odds dictates at least a 50/50.

Bottom line...consoles aren't as inferior as the master race would have you believe. Not every PC is built the same and definitely not all are running on Ultra settings. Most are at console standards anyway. So they can shove that peasant garbage.

@lithus: I don't doubt that the numbers are that high. that "experiment" was admittedly not scientific. I bet if you narrowed down that group to simply those who have pc rigs many more would have gotten it right. Have you ever considered the another possible explanation is the fact that the very games themselves are developed with the consoles in mind? Of course you aren't going to able to tell a huge difference watching compressed video over the internet. I wonder how many people actually went to the trouble of downloading that pure, uncompressed footage. I wonder still how many people even have the higher res monitors to see the difference with respect to that. Of course that can't even be compared can it? I get them all right, I know that much. It comes down to you believing what you will and me doing the same. Nothing we say to each other is going to change that. I'm happy with my pc even if it is the simple minor improvements to graphics and a solid 60 fps at all times. I do hate that the baseline is so low that people find it difficult to tell the difference between the three systems. I don't think it proves your point though, rather, I believe it supports mine. Consoles are the lowest common denominator and generally hold back enhancements in visual fidelity. Just like they did for the prior years before these "next-gen machines." When it comes down to brass tacks, there is simply no way that a machine with 1.6 ghz AMD netbook equivalent processor and an under clocked equivalent of an AMD mid-range graphics card can keep up with the latest and greatest of pc tech. However, the products themselves can be bastardized in order to make the differences as small as possible.

@skiggy34: all I pointed out was both consoles now have and in some respects are doing the same stuff and with the same features now (am I right in thinking apple products interact only with other apple stuff?, up to a point, so makes sense sony does it with there's, after all they just want more money - do that buy this, another stand alone reason there is more windows laptops out there then sonys z3 and tablets/laptops) - both getting a tv sub "cut the cord" service at some point ........

whats next for both expect vr and holo lens ? all that stuff you wrote bro was pulling points in from now where I'm not interested who copied who , now both have the same features where's it gonna go next?

@skiggy34: pssst, skiggy, fyi, xbl was well after both dc and playstation online...

Not only did the ps2 do voice chat before there was an xbox, it also did skype... a d "trophies" are far from being something the xbox did first.

It is clear you never has a ps anything..., you are far more likely to have cut your teeth in video gaming on minecraft for xb360....

Do you even consider what you post or do you go full fanboy all the time?

@Flyin3lvl: dc was, msft was actually the compang sega contracted to make it happen... much like early xbl, it was a hot mess, but it was online none the less. Techically, other forms of online existed on even earlier consoles, but they are so drastically different.

@Flyin3lvl: First of all, that's cross-buy between Sony systems, not Sony and PC. Second of all, PS4 doesn't have backwards compatibility...Sony themselves said it.

@ExoticCharm: yes they did themselves says "not backwards nor will it be"" - ps4 was built with vr not ps3 ...... when they stated and clearly stated ""not backwards"" I also kept the ps3 , I don't have an issues switching a hd cable from the back of the ps4 and into the ps3 ...... not such a big deal

@ExoticCharm: Why the hell would I want to play PS3 games on my PS4 ? Only mental people would do that. You are in a new generation of consoles, you move on. If you don't have the cash for purchasing the PS4, well wait till you get some. It's not like the PS3 has stopped selling or the PS3 games have all vanished. If anything, this is one of the best times to be a PS3 gamer. Games are on discount along with the console itself. I have not sold my PS3 yet.

@starjay009: Well....it gives you the option to part exchange your old console for a new one. You get a next gen machine for less money and until you start building up your new game library you still have something to play. It's pretty obvious really.

@lil_ze76: throwing out a ps3? Fat chance... still the best all in one media console on the market for media playback.... ps3 is still worth something, and far too useful in any home with humans in it.

@starjay009: What if people new to uncharted wants to jump in from the begining? what if people love a game like fallout 3 and he doesnt want to connect the dusty ps3 back into the tv. What if you give crap about a game when it came out for example fallout 4, you love it on your console and then want to play the last 2 games to see what you missed. Thats why. But i dont have to worry about this, i play on my PC. We dont have backward compatibility problems. For example i didnt liked mass effect 1 and didnt care about 2 or 3. now i can buy the 3 games for $13 dlls.

@Flyin3lvl: Cross play limited to Vita, Windows 10 already has a greater install base than the number of Vita's sold.

Remote play is limited to Sony devices, that barely sell as is. Windows 10 is a free upgrade that can be used on devices most already own.

PS Now is backward compatibility but comes at a premium cost, dollar wise and internet bandwidth wise.

Sony's media player literally just got released.

Media player is the only thing there that doesn't benefit Sony financially. I'm sure it's part of the reason it took so long to be added.

Not to say Microsoft isn't in it for the money, but all these added features come to me without any cost or increased investment, which I like.

@steve_g: Cross-play actually exists between PS3 and PS4 as well as PC and PS3 and PC and PS4. As far as I know there is no Vita and PC cross-play.

No.Did i care enough to comment about it? Sure. However you decide to look at it, it safe to say that you are bad at semantics buddy.

@eternaldragoonx: Because it's a single game, cross buy should get you a copy on each platform, this way if they do a cross buy paid game and only DLC is transferable, you'd need to buy 2 copies.

Gigantic and Fable Legends are both free to play so what other purchases could be carried across. The games are FREE. I believe Killer Instinct and Minecraft purchases on the xbox one will carry over to windows 10 also. Maybe Pinball FX2 as well. Here's hoping anyway.
