Now Playing: Venom - Teaser Trailer

The first trailer for Venom has arrived. The movie focuses on the character taken from Marvel's Spider-Man comics, an alien symbiote who takes over a photographer named Eddie Brock. Tom Hardy plays Brock, and the movie hits theaters in October.

The trailer doesn't give much away, but it feels more like a dark sci-fi thriller than comic book movie. It shows Hardy waking up in a hospital, presumably after Venom has taken over his body. There's the discovery of some sort of alien ship, a hint of the powers that Venom has given Brock, and while we don't seen Venom himself, there is a quick shot of the gooey black matter that forms the creature. Check it out above, and head over to our Venom trailer 1 or trailer 2 breakdown for much more.

The trailer follows the first poster, which was revealed yesterday. Venom releases on October 5, 2018, and also stars Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, and Woody Harrelson. Zombieland's Ruben Fleischer is directing.

Although Sony made a deal with Disney in 2015 to allow Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the former studio still retains the overall movie rights to characters from the comics. In terms of other Spidey spin-offs, Venom will be followed by Silver & Black. That movie will focus on Silver Sable and the Black Cat and is currently set for a February 8, 2019 release.

In related news, Sony recently released a trailer for a new animated Spider-Man movie titled Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse. This one focuses on Miles Morales, who started life in the Ultimate Universe but has since crossed over into various other Marvel comic realities.

"First Trailer For Venom Doesn't Feel Like A Comic Book Movie " Funny how that's only an issue when it's convenient. Funny how nobody cared that the Nolan films or Logan had nothing to do with the experience of comic books. Even some of the more recent MCU films have thrown comic books and accuracy away for mainstream appeal and childish jokes.

@rglgathrawn: logan is passed off the comic book series old man logan

gotta keep an open mind about seeing this, cant have any expectations.

I'm worried that the first 1.5 hrs of the movie will be boring filler, then only during the last 10 minutes there will be true Venom form.

Better not be Agent Venom

Cause that is garbage.

So you want me to watch an watch an ad?

In the 15+ seconds I would have wasted watching that ad, I went to youtube and started watching it there.

Keep up the good work GS.

@JSusie: If you want to watch an ad, it's not really an ad.

Every game, tv show, movie, news article etc. is an ad of something

@JSusie: Its funny you say that, i actually stopped watching videos on Gamespot's site altogether about a year ago.

Dumb trailer. Looked like a generic action/thriller.

Eddie Brock is a big guy.

@ferval100: For you.

Avatar image for pumpkinmancer

@Metallicwolf29: sometimes Venom wasn't a bad guy.

Regardless if it's great or terrible, I'll still be watching it because I love Venom. Tom Hardy is a plus, and he'll be magnitudes better at it than Topher Grace ever was. Now...I'm just curious how they're going to tell his origin story considering the entire reason Venom was created - a villain to Spider-Man - will not be there.

A no show for Venom though. Too bad they didn't showed the transformed thing. Maybe it will happened just in the end with the whole movie pushing Eddie to struggle with it from the inside. I like this approach from Sony/Marvel on focusing on villains.

@ChldsPlay: It's not a MCU movie I know that but still Sony bought Venom from Marvel. Obviously the logo at the start of trailer means something :)

Interesting. Will be good to see them mix it up a little more in terms of style, genre and tone.

I hope that when the Symbiote get over Tom Hardy he gets really big and ripped, i don't want no slimy Venom like the one in Spider man 3. The teaser is kind of a let down because all the things shown in it have nothing to do specifically with VENOM except for the canister with the symbiote inside, all the footage look like a generic thriller and action movie, at first i thought it was a fan made teaser lolll.

I like tom hardy i hope the movie is good and not stain on his career, I think is role in "taboo" on fx was great

Tom Hardy could be a good Venom. He looked jacked playing Bane. Still not having any glimpse of him is off putting. I'm a big fan of Venom but with no attachment to Spidey they are going to have their work cut out for them.

Avatar image for PrpleTrtleBuBum

@shade8nj: Just imagine Venom sounding like Bane

It doesn't feel like the movie has been in production for very long at all, guess more work will be in post production but October seems a bit soon.

@aross2004: Very nice...

Avatar image for furiouswk

wow an action movie trailer that isn't aimed at 13yr olds!! FINALLY

Loved it. Hopefully it's rated R

Avatar image for ProjektInsanity

@furiouswk: Agreed. Looks like an actual movie. Very interested.

Avatar image for shadowwarrior4

@furiouswk: sorry but sorny is aiming at comic fans under 21

Avatar image for uninspiredcup

Meh trailer, but Tom Hardy, so i'll watch.

Avatar image for RedWave247

Oh neat, Venom apparently ties in with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2.

What? I'm not the only one who thought that canister looked exactly like the TCRI canister?

Yeah, this movie looks like hot garbage. Guarantee it'll bomb worse than Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Avatar image for PSYCHOV3N0M

@RedWave247: Isn't it TGRI???

Avatar image for RedWave247

@PSYCHOV3N0M: Crap, you're right. I should've looked it up to be sure instead of going totally by memory. Thanks.

Avatar image for vfighter

@RedWave247: Can I borrow your time machine?

Avatar image for RedWave247

@vfighter: You don't want to see the future. Emperor Trump just declared war against the country of California.

Avatar image for ProjektInsanity

@RedWave247: HAHA! Nice.

You know, I thought I couldn't be more underwhelmed for this movie...

But this trailer is just so boring. It's trying way to hard to be moody and melodramatic, the action shots they showed all seem like run of the mill action scenes (generic car chase for example...), and seeing Tom Hardy doesn't get me hyped about Venom. You know what might get someone hyped for Venom? VENOM! Why are they even making this?

And honestly, a lot of it reminds me about the most recent Fantastic Four movie...

Avatar image for JustPlainLucas

@baron_machina: Well... it is a teaser.

Avatar image for baron_machina

@JustPlainLucas: Teaser or not, it's still a trailer. It's supposed to give people a preview of the movie and give them something to be excited about. Plus it's about long as a regular trailer and mostly comprised of footage, yet all of it is brooding narration and generic action shots. The new Hellboy hasn't even gotten a teaser, yet they showed off how he would look in the movie. With so many people already skeptical about this movie, this was Sony's chance to try and show that Venom might be able to stand on its own. But with it coming out this year, I have pretty much no hope or interest in this, even less so after this trailer.
