While we have to wait a little longer for full reviews, the first social media reactions to the Ryan Reynolds video game movie Free Guy have arrived, providing a first glimpse at the critical reception to the long-delayed film. A number of people who saw the movie and shared their reactions said it contains some special secrets and surprises, so you'll want to be careful to avoid spoilers.

Steve Weintraub of Collider said, "It's a fun and feel good movie that had me smiling beginning to end. Also, the movie has a surprise or two that legit made my jaw drop. See it as soon as you can so you can avoid spoilers."

Free Guy follows the story of an NPC in a video game, Reynolds' Guy, who one day realizes the nature of their existence and teams up with some friends to literally change the game. Jodie Comer and Joe Keery also star, while Taika Waititi plays the villain. The movie was expected to debut much sooner, but Disney/Fox delayed the movie to August 13 due in part to the pandemic.

The film is directed by Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum, Stranger Things) from a script by Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn.

"One of the freshest-feeling, genuinely funny, and surprisingly moving big-budget adventure movies in years," Joel Meares said.

"Free Guy is the most fun I’ve had watching a movie all year. Wildly entertaining & hilarious from beginning to end. It deserves to be seen on the big screen, not only for the spectacular visuals but for the plethora of surprises throughout. It’s Truman Show meets Ready Player One," Scott Menzel said.
