First PlayStation 5 Details Revealed: PS5 Specs, PSVR Support, PS4 Backwards Compatibility, And More

Next-gen has been revealed a little bit early...kinda.

While its release is still far out, the PlayStation 5 is real. In an uncharacteristic step, Sony has revealed a variety of information about its upcoming next-generation system. In an interview with Wired, PlayStation 4 lead system architect Mark Cerny spoke about working on the PS4's successor, which at this point doesn't officially have a name but will presumably fall in line with Sony's past consoles and be called the PlayStation 5. Cerny revealed details about PSVR support, backwards compatibility, cross-gen game releases, specs, and much more. Some key details--such as a specific price and release date--are still unknown, but Sony reaffirmed during a recent investor's call that the system is still at least more than a year away.

In the Wired interview, Cerny confirmed the next-gen PlayStation is partially based on PS4 architecture, which means that it is backwards compatible. Cerny also revealed that it is not an all-digital device, and will accept physical discs. Wired's article describes the transition from PS4 to PS5, as indicated by Cerny, as a "gentle one," adding that numerous games will be released for both PS4 and the next-gen console. The description of a gentle transition indicates that the PS5 will be an iteration on the PS4, instead of being drastically different the way the PS3 was from its predecessor.

Now Playing: Sony Talks PS5 Specs, Backwards Compatibility, 8K, And More - GS News Update

Housed in the console will be an AMD chip that has a CPU based on the third-generation Ryzen. It'll have eight cores of the seven-nanometer Zen 2 microchip. Although the console will support 8K, displaying at this resolution will be dependant on TVs catching up.

The graphics, meanwhile, will be driven by a custom version of Radeon's Navi line. This graphics chip will support ray tracing, something which is starting to become popular in movies and video games. Although it is traditionally thought of as a lighting technique, Cerny says that there are implications beyond creating realistic environments.

"If you wanted to run tests to see if the player can hear certain audio sources or if the enemies can hear the players' footsteps, ray tracing is useful for that," he explained. "It's all the same thing as taking a ray through the environment."

In fact, audio is one the main improvements Cerny is keen to talk about. The AMD chip will enable 3D audio, and this, according to Cerny, is key to immersing players deeper. This naturally led to discussions of PlayStation VR, and while Cerny didn't confirm whether a new version of Sony's headset will be released, the existing one will be supported.

"I won't go into the details of our VR strategy ... beyond saying that VR is very important to us and that the current PSVR headset is compatible with the new console," he confirmed.

Another key leap the next PlayStation will make comes through its hard drive. According to Cerny, developers let Sony know that what they want solid-state drives in the new hardware, as opposed to the slower equivalents used in current consoles. These SSDs are relatively prevalent now in laptops, and what Sony is bringing to the next PlayStation is described as being specialized for the hardware.

Cerny demonstrated the change an SSD introduces to gaming by comparing a load sequence from Insomniac's Spider-Man on a standard PS4 Pro and a dev kit of the next-gen PlayStation. On the former, it was around 15 seconds, while on the latter it was 0.8 seconds. This, Cerny added, has implications on how the world can be rendered too, which in turn impacts how quickly Spidey can move through the world. On the new hardware, the camera moves through the city much quicker, as the hardware is capable of keeping up with rendering requirements.

Discussing the SSD, Cerny said "the raw read speed is important, but so are the details of the I/O [input-output] mechanisms and the software stack that we put on top of them. I got a PlayStation 4 Pro and then I put in a SSD that cost as much as the PlayStation 4 Pro—it might be one-third faster."

The shared architecture between PS4 and PS5, naturally, creates the path for games being developed on the former to appear on the latter. One such game is Death Stranding, which is developed by Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima and the Kojima Productions team. In the interview, Cerny was asked how Death Stranding fits into Sony's PS5 plans to have cross-generation releases, and reportedly smiled, before a spokesperson merely repeated the game would come to PS4. Obviously, this isn't a clear indication of what Sony's plans are, but could perhaps be a tease, given the context.

Cerny didn't provide any details on any of the services or a broader overview of PlayStation's vision for the next-generation of gaming, instead focusing on the nitty-gritty of its hardware. It is currently unclear when the console will be fully unveiled. Traditionally, Sony would has debuted its new PlayStations at E3, but the company will not have its usual press conference this year. This leaves PlayStation Experience, one of its new Nintendo Direct-like State of Play streams, or a standalone PS5 announcement event as possibilities--that is assuming it plans to reveal the PlayStation 5 this year.

It is also unclear when Sony plans to launch the PS5. In May 2018, Sony's head of PlayStation, John Kodera, said the new PlayStation was three years off. "We will use the next three years to prepare the next step," he said, "to crouch down so that we can jump higher in the future."

Although PS5's price was not broached in the interview, an additional piece of the conversation was subsequently shared on Twitter. In that, Cerny described the system's cost as "appealing to gamers in light of its advanced feature set."

While Sony's plans are still largely unclear, Microsoft's are starting to come into focus. The company is set to have an E3 press conference this year, and head of Xbox Phil Spencer said it is going to go "as big at E3 as we've ever been." In 2018, Microsoft confirmed that a new Xbox was in development, and it is expected that we'll see this next-generation console at E3 2019. More immediately, it has been suggested that an all-digital Xbox One S will be announced soon. As the name indicates, this new console would not accept physical discs and designed around downloading and streaming.

In theory I think they'll make more buttons. Holding your controller, you'll notice your triggers can be used by one finger. This is nice because they can add one more button, you can use the end of your finger to press making 3 triggers for your first finger. I play many games using Raiju soft pull, while being able to press the inside trigger easily, without having much trouble using the other trigger as well. Using your middle finger for one extra soft pull and your ring finger and pinky to grip the controller around the bottom, there'll be one more button there to play with. That's a total of 5 side buttons on each side, for 10 total buttons you can press while moving the joysticks. I think there'll be a D-Pad (directional pad), that'll be used in some games for menus or however developers need to use them. The 4 additional buttons will be added, putting them 2 on each side of the controller near the Start and Select buttons I think they'll be a little smaller too. Then the space where the 4 traditional Triangle, Square, Circle and Cross buttons , will be filled with a touch pad or the like. That can be used for many things, like camera, or free animations. The right side joystick will then be the 4 traditional Triangle, Square, Circle and Cross buttons and I think they'll be a little smaller too, due to being where the right joystick used to be.

I think they may also take a different direction, like something super impressive. This way they can benefit from several new genera, PC players are enjoying the most. I think they may do what I said above, though there's a difference. They may do it in 3 parts, splitting the controller in half, using each side independently though also offering a mouse to replace the right or left side depending. I even considered a mouse wheel on the right half, to be a mouse replacement for a interesting new control type, for games to be played a bit differently using the wheel as a rotation method. This will also be considered for motion controls, if they don't have a separate solution for it as I am sure they will. All this boils down to the hardware and software, they are developing for system. If they really want to take it far enough, for many generations to come, I think they should go as far as they can this time. That way problems and patches to fix problems are out of the way, for the new generations after this one. All in all I think touch screen/pads will be their best option, to develop hand eye and swiping tech they need to impress people the most. Cool thing about it is they can make many rings for touch, tracking the players thumb and finger movements. How this will be used is up to developers, to use creatively for their benefit. Opening these options, is something they need to keep creative games being made and to keep players interested with their products.

I hope this help explain my expectations for a new console, as I would like to see progress made. This also mean some AAA titles may take a bit longer to develop, at least until a good toolset is made to apply to the new controller. Also i'd like to mention I think the PS5 will be backward compatible, controllers included. This mean the new controller won't be DualShock, it'll be something totally impressive, plus you can use a Dualshock you buy or already own from PS3 or 4.

A little too bold for Sony and AMD to be bolstering NVme storage, let alone 8K support on the PS5 when that feature isn't even widely adopted or remotely available mainstream as of yet, and it's not even trending in the PC Master Race space.

@CRAPCOM1926: Yes.. There are already tons of reports online saying that the human eye cant tell the difference between 4k and 8k... Let alone any 8k media or hardware. Its probably 15 years away from being mainstream at least.

i want to know, with your guys' permission if i may ask a few questions that i have about the PlayStation 5 or whatever it's going to be called... i always ask permission because that is the way that i am and i don't want to disrespect anybody because i just am a friendly kind-hearted guy...

* i saw that in the video that a headset was featured... my question is this if i may ask: do i need to use the headset for games or can i just play games without it... i asked that because like most people do not want to play with a headset and i am not disrespecting others either...

* not basically on the video but i saw on the PlayStation 4 which wireless controllers are considered... my question if i may ask is this: does or will the PlayStation 5 come with a wire so people who don't like wireless controllers can plug the wire into the controller/controllers... i asked this because and i am being truthful here some people, like me don't like the wireless controller/controllers...

THANK-YOU

Brandon L. Clement

P.S. if i was being disrespectful or rude in anyway, shape or form while commenting on this, please tell me and beforehand i really do apologize...

@videogamer008: There is no reason you would ever be forced to use a headset.

As far as corded controllers, the PS5 should come with a charging cable for the controller, (like with the PS4). Technically, you could play corded with that cable, but it is way too short to be a good solution, (I think the cord is like 2 feet long, tops).

If you want a corded controller, you should just be able to get a 3rd party controller that will inevitably be available for the system, or you could probably get a much longer charging cord on Amazon and use that.

Agreed on focusing on FPS first and resolution second. I bet the average gamer wouldn't notice small resolution changes but WOULD notice when FPS drops.

Sony did a fanastic job with the PS4 and certainly made the HD easily to swap, BUT Sony has a bad history of choosing proprietary tech. It kills me (and limits my playtime on it) how the Vita card doesn't allow standard SD-type cards and the cost of their 8 gb cards would get you a 64 GB card elsewhere. That philosophy has been a long standing one, so having a non-standard drive would be a real shame and limit it's long term usability.

1440p @60 FPS should be what they're mainly going for in games...1080p is so old and 30 FPS especially not a smooth 30 is annoying and not as pleasing. Right now i'm seriously contemplating not spendng my money on anymore consoles.

I still believe that current generation got much more to offer and it's way too early to move to a new machine, There're hundreds of great games unplayed by me yet on the PS4... I'm not gonna pay hundreds to reduce 2 seconds of loading time, grafix are amazing, gameplay is stunning now, why upgrade?

@abboodeh: dude cut the crap. This is the norm... How long have you been in gaming? Most console gens last 4-6 years. PS4/X1 came in 2013 it's 6 years. So cut the bs acting like you don't want next gen.

@abboodeh: well, ps5 is not releasing until the end of NEXT year... so i don't see your point. ps5 will release in year SEVEN of the ps4. how much longer do you expect them to drag it out for? also, it's not like every single game will release exclusively on ps5 once ps5 releases. i expect many games to be cross platform for at least two years after ps5 releases as that has been the case with pretty much every sony platform since the ps1. not to mention, since ps5 is b/c with ps4, you could sell your ps4 if you wish to help pay for the ps5. seems like a win win to me.

[solved]: ps5 is obviously just better than the ps4, because the number at the end is bigger!

My main thing is the full support SSD's. I've had a 1TB Hybrid SSD since launch and its significantly faster even without the internal hardware's full support. This is welcome news! I think I basically cut down Witcher 3 load times by nearly half even with the Hybrid.

Cant wait to see the PS5 unfold with more details. As it stands though, the only thing I'm excited about is Cyberpunk. Can't wait to be lost in that world.

the 8k announcement is just a bullet point to show that the console is future proof. in reality, the focus absolutely will not be on 8k -- how could it be if no consumer tv's even exist in that resolution? (and won't be mainstream for many years at that), let alone the fact visually impressive games won't have a prayer in running at 8k. people need to relax. the focus will be on native 4k gaming with options to supersample at 1080p/60 for those who don't have a 4k tv. of course all physical ps4 games will be b/c with ps5... even after sony officially announced that, there are still skeptics out there who don't believe physical games or digital games will be b/c lol... BOTH formats will be b/c on ps5, otherwise you cannot claim it is b/c. simple as that. the 0.8 second load time for spiderman is the most impressive news about the ps5. this is game changing and revolutionary -- not even high end pc's can compare since to get such performance, a game needs to be optimzed and tailor made for the hardware at hand. that will NEVER be possible on pc to the same extent.

@Xristophoros: The bespoke optimization of first-party games is a great thing for console platforms no doubt, but the trade-off is that consoles generally lack the hardware to power through performance issues the way that a gaming PC can. This is why The Witcher 3 was patched for two years straight on consoles. The lack of capable hardware generally leaves the developer with little to no wiggle room to meet performance expectations. I stress first-party in my first sentence because third-party console games typically don't have the same level of optimizations as first-party games, such as the major issues seen in the Witcher 3 that I mentioned above.

P.S. Next gen for the PC will begin right around the same time as the release of next gen consoles and we know what that means. The future looks great for both platforms respectively, but as usual the consoles will get left behind.

@Xristophoros: Consumer TV in that resolution might show up faster if the product that supports it is out there in the millions and that's one way to get 8K out the door in a form of a console instead of a $20.000 dollar TV. I Expect that the next Xbox will do the same so there will be choices out there.

@angrycreep: You seem to be quite eager for 8K and I don't understand why. I sell and install TVs and other electronics for a living. Given how the vast majority of people watch TV, 8K is completely pointless. One of the few applications that really could do with an increase in resolution is VR headsets.

@angrycreep: the only games that are going to run at 8k are likely legacy games (ps3 and earlier) or modern indi games. don't expect to see cutting edge, next gen games running at 8k, though. 8k video is another possibility, but that's it. the industry has nothing else exciting to talk about so they throw around the 8k term to show "progress". it is a sham at this point in time... many would argue that there are diminishing returns with resolution beyond 4k as well unless you have an 80" tv in your house. in other words, only a few elite people will benefit from 8k... 99% of the world will never need to upgrade from 4k and most people are more than happy with 1080p. i think 8k is a pipe dream and will fail.

Ok, I'm not worried about 8K at this point, since I don't really see the display of most games being much better at 4K for the size TV I have, but I would like to know if they're going to have the DVD player at least 4K compatible. Kinda annoying that I can play games at 4K but not watch a 4K UHD DVD on the player. I'm not getting a 4K DVD player just for that, but I likely will get a PS5 so it'd be a nice bonus. As it is, I don't want a separate DVD player just for the sake of how many items are plugged into my TV and power strip. (ah, first world problems)

@mpm76: If they are content in selling it for less than $500 then they my skip the 4K player and just tell you to stream and watch it. If they include this so you are guarantee to pay at least 500 bucks plus taxes for your next PS

Im happy for the backwards compatibility. I've owned my PS4 pro since 2016 and only use it to play excellent Sony exclusives. I enjoy my Xbox more because of its infrastructure(which isnt perfect) and most of my friends are on xbox, but the lack of exclusives really did a number on Microsoft this generation. There isn't any good reason for owning an Xbone over a PS4. I feel Microsoft won the last generation of consoles, but surely lost this one. Im looking forward to both Sony and Microsoft stepping their game up for the next gen. I love good competition and regardless i will buy all consoles that come out next gen as long as they are backwards compatible. I have a large digital library and shouldn't have to buy my games all over again.
