Spike and Acquire have released the first solid details on the upcoming PlayStation 2 action game Samurai. The 3D action-adventure game focuses on weapons-based combat, but it also has story elements and a relatively large cast of characters. Samurai's story takes place in the year 1877, in a changing time when the usefulness of the samurai has been brought into question. During these unsettled times, the player assumes the role of a samurai who is wandering the land looking for work.

The game's developer promises that Samurai's gameplay will be open-ended and its story will change depending on the decisions made by the player as he or she advances in the game. At the game's onset, players will have the option to customize their unique samurai warrior. As they wander out into the gameworld, they will be able to talk to a variety of NPC characters and accept missions of their choosing. A variety of missions, including assassination, kidnapping, rescue, negotiation, and stealth, will be available in the game. The combat in Samurai features simple weapons-based and grab attacks, but there will also be a variety of combination attacks at the player's disposal--the developer promises more than 40 unique attack combinations.

According to Acquire, the game is bit on the short side in terms of total gameplay time. However, the developer says that due to the dynamic nature of the game's story and missions, Samurai will be a different experience every time it's played. Samurai is currently slated for a February 7 release in Japan. No word on a North American release date at this time.
