Monte Cristo visited the GameSpot office yesterday with a pre-alpha build of Micro Commandos, its upcoming real-time tactical strategy game. Players control a group of tiny aliens sent to take over Earth, but first they must learn how to survive by using the energy sources and objects found in various environments. The goal of the game is to find the ultimate weapon that will help them bring the planet to its knees.

Although the game is still in the early stages of development, the build showed off some of the game's lighthearted characters and environments. The complete game will include 13 different areas, such as a pizzeria, a haunted house, a museum, a cabaret, and a school. The alien invasion force must build a tiny base of operations from which to explore their environment, and they must fend off attacks from cockroaches, spiders, mice, and kittens while they search for the ultimate weapon. The game will have a four-mission tutorial and a single-player campaign with 12 missions.

We've posted some screenshots in the gallery above that show off some of the game's characters and environments. Micro Commandos is scheduled for release in May.
