First Look: Capcom's Super Street Fighter 2 Collection

The biggest of all fighting games comes to the 32-bit machine in an all-new collection for Saturn and PlayStation.

Over time, Capcom has become synonymous with one fighting game - Street Fighter II. That series alone has spawned several upgrades, including Street Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter II Championship Edition, Super Street Fighter II, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, and more. The series has been ported to just about every console in one form or another - including the Game Boy.

Now, Capcom is taking elements of the series and bringing them to the PlayStation and Saturn, in the form of the Street Fighter II Collection, whose first volume includes Super Street Fighter II and Super Street Fighter II Turbo. In the current release, only those two games are finished on the disc.

The screens you see here are from the PlayStation version of the game. Granted, the PlayStation has become known as a system that can't handle 2-D fighting games without lots of loading time. The PlayStation version gets around this by having a shortcut, in the form of a less-detailed character select screen and vs. screen. The loading time isn't bad either; it's about that of Street Fighter Alpha 2 on the PlayStation.

The gameplay is almost exactly like the arcade version. Street Fighter aficionados may be able to notice that some detail has been cut from the animation, but it's minimal.
