Now Playing: Telltale Had "No Choice" In Layoffs, Might Still Finish The Walking Dead - GS News Update

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

The second episode in Telltale's The Walking Dead final season season arrives on schedule this Tuesday, but with the massive layoffs from last week, will episodes Three and Four ever release? They might. Telltale announced today that "multiple potential partners" have come forward to "express interest" in helping Telltale release the final two episodes.

However, Telltale said it "can't make any promises." And even if a deal is secured with one of the potential partners, it may only be to complete and release the games "in some form." You can read the full statement below.

Telltale shared no details on who the "potential partners" might be. And the wording about releasing the final two episodes "in some form" is less than encouraging. Whatever the case, Telltale said it hopes to "have answers for your other questions soon."

Telltale's "majority studio closure" was announced on Friday, and it resulted in 225 of the studio's 250 people losing their jobs. In the wake of this announcement, many wondered what would happen to Telltale's The Walking Dead and other franchises.

Given that The Walking Dead: Final Season was already in progress, fans were understandably concerned about if they would get to see how the story wraps up. There is also the matter of refunds. Players who pre-bought the season pass to get all the episodes may want a refund.

The character Clementine is at the heart of the story in The Walking Dead's final season. Her voice actress, Melissa Hutchinson, said on Twitter that she was sad about Telltale's closure and what it means for the fate of The Walking Dead. Hutchinson said she thought Telltale would release Episode Two and "that will be it." This is a developing story, so things are changing all the time, it seems.

"We'll help you release the game...as long as we get the revenue and don't have to pay anything"

Just kill the game. A skeleton crew of employees and "third parties" will not result in a quality game.

I wonder what kind of "partnership" they mean. I'm going to guess that it will be about selling them the project so they can finish it.

Because, if after laying off so many people without any kind of compensation you happen to have money to hire another "partner", then you have some f***ing nerve and lack of shame.

@Warlord_Irochi: What partners means is probably some investors or other studios who will obviously make their investment back. Business :D

Sorry for the people, who lost their jobs, but, they should have known that this type of nieche-games will only get them so far. Gameplay wise, all of their games are the same (some walking, dialogue options and quick-time events). Gameplay aspect wears down pretty fast after two or three games. And, regarding the story, since their all gimmick was story-driven games, even though whether someone likes the story or not is purely subjective, but, in my opinion, the only good story (and that's debatable) had only a couple of games: TWD Season 1, The Wolf Among Us and Tales from the Borderlands. And at best, I'd rate their stories 6-7/10 (from the ones I liked).

Another thing, they made episodic games (it's not like a TV series when each new episode comes out every week, or in Netflix case, they bring the whole season). The period from one episode to the next often lasted for more than three months. That's not a good thing, when you have, let's say, Remedy Entertainment's "Alan Wake", which released in full and had all of the "episodes" (chapters or something) already available for you to play or that newish game of them forgot the name, but it had "agent Broylles" from Fringe (not to mention DotNod Enterntainment's Life is Strange, and some other story-driven games).

Shame. Tales from the Borderlands is still one of the best, funniest games I've ever played. The titles for each episode were amazing.

You know that scene where Scott Calvin says "yeah yeah, but what if I fall off a roof?" I'm like "Yeah yeah, but what about Batman?"

@Terrorantula: Dude, have you tried calling the police? Let us help you. Please tell us who on God's green earth is putting a gun to your head and forcing you to buy and play these games?

Because that is really the only reason this should bother you... right? Surely, SURELY that is the reason. Because normal, sane human beings don't think everything made on the planet must be tailor suited to them and them alone. But that would just be silly. You, of course, are being serious, and must be coerced into experiencing game after game that Telltale makes.

@P00DGE: I never played that many of their games. like i never got into Walking dead tv show so didnt want to play the same thing in a way. Its like i watch the show, dont want to play a game based on it. Liked The Wolf Among Us.

So many good books TellTale could have made amazing story driven games out of.

I wish they made more original games not based on things like popular TV shows or other games. That offers so much more freedom towards story telling across the genres.

@dudebropartyyo: The games they made that were based on licensed materials focused on stories that had never been told before. Walking Dead has a couple of cameos from the main cast, but is largely a brand new story with brand new character set in the same universe. Same for the Game of Thrones game, Jurassic Park game, etc etc.

My favorite game of theirs was Back to the Future, which functioned pretty much like the 4th movie. In fact, whenever I feel like replaying that game, I always start by rewatching the 3 movies first, since it picks up right where the 3rd movie left off, and was just great fun while staying true to the tone and style of the movies.

@P00DGE: Telltale pissed off a lot of its core fans.

I for one was mildly disappointed by the low quality and buggy game they produced like the michonne miniseries and the batman game.

What was disappointing was that i wanted to play that "Big" seaosn 3 they teased at the end of season 2 of the walking dead. Seeing them take high profile licenses from DC, Marvel and Microsoft and produce mediocre games instead of appeasing their original fans who made them popular in the first place felt like when an enthusiast brand on kickstarter attempting to go mainstream by ignoring their core users. It was just disappointing.

Then they really fucked me over with that new frontier game which they teased mercilessly. i still remember that post E3 interview where the dude said " Many of you will notice that a finger is missing on clementine Oooowww " and i was officially hyped to see how it all tie together from the broad ending of season 2. Then it just got wrapped up in a fucking 5 minutes flashback ! I was furious, the fuckers hyped me up just to sell me another mediocre game by dangling in front of me the memories of the best game i've ever played in my life.

So yea, at that point i was despising their very existence, I hope the people who got sacked land on their feet and hopefully have something better than the reported toxic environment they were working in. But the people who called the shots, the people who actively sought to use cheap marketing tactics and hypes while offering a middle finger to core fans for a product. i hope those people never land on their feet, i hope they're discarded and shunned out of the gaming industry.

@Terrorantula: that's a little weird, isn't it?

Why did it bother you just that they existed?

I don't own the final season and it sucks this is happening with the company, but if Telltale cannot deliver the last two episodes to those who own it, then they should refund every purchaser $10 bucks.

If they Are able to find funding and bring back talent to finish the game, and fans rally around this season and episodes to show there is still viable interest in these games when they are done right, then it greatly increases the chance Telltale could be acquired. Still a long shot but it would make them much more attractive as an acquisition, debts and all. Hopefully people will rally around this title.

Since the change at CEO they definitely seemed to be righting a really messed up ship. They cut back on staff, focused in on one project at a time, worked toward updating the engine and I think it absolutely showed in Episode 1 this season, they just need more runway. I’ve had a great time with some of their titles and am willing to buy the season pass and see what happens.

I enjoyed the novelty of playing Game of Thrones for two chapters before getting bored. The voice acting was great, though, and I imagine very expensive. I wonder if Kit Harington wore the lifts whilst reading his lines.

@timthegem: Funnily enough, that is as far as I got too. And it was actually pretty damn good! The story that is. I went in expecting Game of Thronesy style storytelling and character killing, and it STILL caught me by surprise a couple of times. I can't quite say why I never played beyond episode 2 though.

@P00DGE: I think it got a lot of hate due to the art style which was kinda dodgy. They probably should of opted for more of a dark comic book style for the models.

Regardless of my personal stand on their business practices, they launched some great games and it's never good when 200 people lose their jobs. I hope all of them get employed very soon!

Telltale's release schedules have never met their own deadlines. The game mechanic although initially enjoyable, is over twenty years old. Along the way Telltale inundated us with too many story games with no increase in quality.

This isn't even remotely surprising, what I am amazed by is that it took this long. I am sure this is an unpopular opinion but I won't miss Telltale even a little. Thanks for the approx. 10-12 hours of moderate enjoyability I had playing The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us.

I bet the CEO will get a silver lining. That truly sucks for the devs that put in their time, but hopefully they will be able to get a job with a better company.

Maybe Deck Nine should be the one....they did the prequel to Life is Strange. They should pick up Wolf Among Us as well.
