Final Fight brawls to Wii VC

Seminal SNES beat-'em-up hits the streets of Nintendo's downloadable game service alongside Mighty Bomb Jack, Ordyne.

When Capcom originally released Final Fight on the Super Nintendo in 1991, having a former pro wrestler turned political figure was novel. But Mike Haggar, the mayor of Metro City, put a prescient pounding on the notion that people wouldn't vote for a man capable of delivering a devastating jumping piledriver, in some sense paving the way for Jesse "The Body" Ventura's stint as governor of Minnesota nearly a decade later.

Now gamers can relive those days, because Nintendo today announced the release of the Super Nintendo edition of Final Fight for the Wii's Virtual Console downloadable game service. When the mayor's daughter is kidnapped by the Mad Gear gang, Haggar teams up with her boyfriend Cody to save her by pummeling the punks into oblivion. While the arcade original featured two-player simultaneous action and a third character, Guy, these features were sacrificed for the series' Super Nintendo debut. Final Fight is available for 800 Wii points ($8).

Joining Final Fight on the Virtual Console today are Tecmo's NES action platformer Mighty Bomb Jack and Namco Bandai's TurboGrafx-16 multiplayer-capable port of the arcade shooter Ordyne. Mighty Bomb Jack is available for 500 Wii points ($5), while Ordyne goes for 600 Wii points ($6).

Watered-down NES ports are one of the downsides of the Wii's Virtual Console service. You can get the original arcade version of Final Fight (complete with multiplayer and the third playable character) on GameTap.

I played and loved the SNES version of Final Fight, not the arcade version. Go Nintendo for not changing a thing

I wish the mega cd version was on here, that game totally ripped the snes version apart, I mean, it actually had ALL the levels!! I really hope that Nintendo would eventually have some mega cd games on there, snatcher would be amazing on the wii as it already has the wii remote to do the blasting!! And sonic cd is one of the best sonic games. The music in final fight on the mega cd was the best, super quality and re-enhanced stuff. And it was smooth, well smooth. But never fear - capcom will probably release another "classics" game, but for the wii - and it will most definately have final fight on it (and 1945 too hopefully). Capcom made SOOO many awesome brawl-em-up games, I loved Caddilacs and Dinosaurs, but the mega cd version is TERRIBLE, its not even the same :(

vidgamer2002 "Final Fight was a great game in either the SNES or Arcade form. Personally, I enjoyed the SNES a little more mainly because the music was much better in this version when compared to the Arcade version. Plus, this game was the reason I wanted to buy a SNES. It has a certain charm that is hard to describe. Maybe Capcom could rerelease the Arcade version incorporating the SNES soundtrack. That would be sweet. Of course, there would be an option to switch between the two." I don't care what you say the snes version can't hold a candle to the arcade version. Sound track , graphics or anything else. But after all its Virtua console, not Virtua Arcade, I guess.

The SNES version of Final Fight was rather poor. I have it on Capcom classics vol. 1 already, so I'll pass.

Hawk456 WHAT!!!! They took out Mike from punch out??? How can they do that? It was called Mike Tyson's Punch out, not just Punch out. I dont know about that one, i think Nintendo should be giving that one away for free, concidering its not actually the same experience I had playing Punch out back in the day.... Hell if Mike wasn't in the game originally i could tell everyone i beat it..... Just think many kids will be able to beat Super Macho Man and not find the hardship's of getting Knock out with one punch from Mike, its just not the same... Hell it taught me early the lesson of the real world always cheating a guy, now kids are going to be missing out on that lesson.... Its going to be a hard disappointing life with out this lesson. Sad Nintendo doesn't want to teach this generation of kids this lesson, like mine.

It's better than nothing but the VC has had a few weak showings of late (excluding Tecmo Bowl). Final Fight doesn't have Guy ... Punch-Out didn't have Mike Tyson. It's the equivalent of getting an ice cream sandwich from the freezer versus one from the Ice Cream Man... sure, an ice cream sandiwch is an ice cream sandwich but psychologically, it's just not the same. The VC is due for a solid release... Metroid? SMB2? Super Metroid? SMB3? SMRPG? Give me something I can sink my teeth into...

I'll stick to the GBA version. Why would i buy a version of Final Fight without Guy?! Beggers beleif. VC is awesome, and i've spent my fare share of money there, but im starting to lose faith, not because of the games coming out for it, i dont care in which order they come out, i realise nintendo is a business like any other, and wants to make money. It's just that for a couple quid more, i can usually find a cart copy of most of the games on ebay. Granted stuff like Zelda, and rarer titles i will probably purchase eventually. But otherwise, i'd be happier owning the real cart until my SNES expires.

notice that nintendo has a VIRTUAL CONSOLE...not an arcade like xbox...so you have to give props to them for making a straight port from the snes...and if you dont wanna buy it...then don't...simple as that

Everytime the put new games up on the VC I here everyone saying very similar things.... "Give us Chrono Trigger!!! Where is Zombies Ate My Neighbors???".... Seriously folks..... Why are they gonna release the best games first? The more games they release before those titles the more money they make. Personally I am looking forward to not only getting those great titles but titles I never owned or may have never heard of. So give them time they will put Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, and all those other great games up.... its just gonna cost us and I am cool with that.

8 bucks may not be much (barely more than 1 hr at minimum wage), but i bet i could buy the original game at a used game store cheaper and It would be on a cartridge. Paying that kinda money for a download is a joke. Final fight was one of my all-time favorite arcade games, but the Snes version is not that great. They changed a few things that just make it garbage compared to the arcade. however the graphics were decent enough. and YOU will WANT a 2player option.

Can't say that I'm excited about any of these. I'm getting annoyed seeing the Wii's online store fill up with VC titles I'll never want to buy.

This virtual console thing has a cool concept, but it is somewhat of a ripoff. Final Fight 8 dollars? Come on you could get a good PS1 game for that price now a days or even Dreamcast.

It's not called Virtual Arcade, it's Virtual Console. Maybe the Wii will get arcade titles in the future, but I really don't have a problem with a service doing exactly what it says it will do.

Final Fight for SNES wasn't too bad port. Although Arcade one is much better, SNES port is very playable. But if you have GBA family or NDS family, its better off having Final Fight ONE, for the secret character and extra feature sake.

Really, why not give us the better version? They should always do that...perhaps they should add an "Arcade" section to the VC. In all fairness, I did play the hell out of Final Fight back in the day-it was one of my fav SNES games, even without multiplayer. But it would have been a helluva lot more fun if I could have shared the experience with friends, and now it's something that I don't wish to waste $8 on. Nintendo, I hope you're listening...

I'm sorry but this sounds like more filler. Why doesn't Nintendo take advantage of it's great Virtual Console? Bring back some of the true classics.. I'm still waiting for a true Chrono Trigger update.

Zinkeboy, these weren't "shoddy" ports years ago, Arcade boards were typically far more powerful than home consoles. Home ports of these games were often welcomed as they were more effecient and (in the long run) cheaper than using the arcade version. It was an acceptable trade off in the day, convinience for options. Just because the technology is similar today doesn't mean its always been.

Yet another week of sludge. I understand Nintendo wants to space-out releasing their really good stuff, but cmon...the library is big enough that you can give us more than this kind of junk. At least ONE game that Ive heard of would be nice!!

DrKill09 "Final Fight is great, but why does it seem the Wii only gets watered down ports instead of the real acade versions?" I guess the fact that there are catagories like SNES, NES, TG-16, Sega Genesis, but no ARCADE must have slipped past you.
