Final Fantasy XIV goes online Sept. 30 on PC

$50 regular version of upcoming MMORPG arrives at end of third quarter; $75 collector's edition to offer early access; PS3 launch TBA.

At the 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo earlier this month, Square Enix showed off its upcoming massively multiplayer role-playing game Final Fantasy XIV. Today, the Japanese publisher dated the game, saying it would launch in North America on September 30 on the PC at a price point of $50. The PlayStation 3 version, which was on display at Sony's E3 2010 press conference, has not been given a release window beyond "2010," though it had been set for a simultaneous release with the PC edition.

For $25 more, Final Fantasy fans can pick up the collector's edition of FFXIV and get access to the game eight days early.
For $25 more, Final Fantasy fans can pick up the collector's edition of FFXIV and get access to the game eight days early.

Final Fantasy fanatics willing to pay $25 will be able to access the game eight days ahead of the masses, courtesy of the early access codes included in the $75 collector's edition of the game. (Square Enix did add the caveat that "timing of access subject to initial server capacity.") Besides the game disc and manual, included will be the following cache of goodies:

--A behind-the-scenes DVD with the obligatory documentary on the making of the game.
--A travel journal with concept art pages in which players can document their in-game wanderings.
--An in-game item called the "Onion Helm."
--A fully personalized "Right of Passage" certificate.
--Special cover illustrated by artist Yoshitaka Amano.
--An FFXIV-branded security token for use with regular password.

Final Fantasy XIV Online will be set in the realm of Eorzea, a world not seen before in any other installments in the franchise. Like in other MMORPGs, gamers will be able to explore the realm after selecting from a variety of races, combat classes, and professional skills. More information on Eorzea's lore and backstory can be found on the game's Web site.

Final Fantasy XIV will be the second installment in the long-running role-playing game to take on the MMORPG genre. The first such game, Final Fantasy XI, debuted on the PC in 2003 and found its way to the PlayStation 2 the next year. An Xbox 360 edition followed in 2006. In a unique twist, the game allowed players from all three platforms to play together in the same gameworld.

Final Fantasy should stick with normal RPG's not MMO's, gonna skip this even tho' i am a FF fan, but FF online...meh.... didn't like XI and so i guess i will not like this. I'll probably spend my money on ToR (i just hope it won't be delayed).

Am I the only one who thinks the Amano artwork on the collector's edition kinda resembles Cecil in his Dark Knight armor sans-helmet? Not saying there's any link there, but it's cool to see his design paid some tribute.

I wish they'd stop doing MMO as proper numbered entries in the series.

Paying a monthly fee for an mmo is just the same as paying for cable or an internet connection. You are paying for content and support. I played WoW for 2 years before getting bored, it was worth the fee. I am hoping FFXIV will be worth it as well.

@clarkspark - FFXIV will play better with a controller even on PC because it was designed to play with one. The developers have stated this in multiple interviews.

@ Dynamo321 It is very likely. They had a similar pricing system in XI. Also, every individual character can do all jobs. So you only "need" one character.

As far as control, I played alpha for FFXIV (now waiting on beta) and the controls were horrid with keyboard and mice. Different was FFXI which seemed to work perfectly on PC with keyboard and mouse. Although after buying a xbox360 controller for the PC, FFXIV worked like a charm and managed the menus and commands with ease. That being said I'm ready for FFXIV on PC with my xbox controller. :p

@kc_hokie I know that, I played the game for 5 years. Just don't agree about the controls, I preferred played it on 360 or ps2 way more, I found the buttons and overall layout absolutely horrible on the pc. That changed when I started using the 360 controller on the pc. I actually had to make macros for doing things that would be very easy to do with the controller before then.

@Barighm Correction: The PC version often reigns superior due to many reasons that have little to do with design intention. The most obvious reason is that an up to date PC is almost always packing way more powerful processing capability, RAM, and video accelerator hardware than these consoles that have been out since 2005. Others may include simple conveniences like dual monitor setups for easy web browsing while playing, as well as the ever popular "alt-tab" among other little joys.

@Dynamo321 - Nope. The PC version of FFXI was superior. PS2 users even had to rush out and buy a hard drive attachment and network adapter to play the game. The PS2 version was more of a PC port than anything.

@kc_hokie weird, remember differently. I thought the macro slots and interface were designed around the ps2, the pc version was pretty clunky to control.

@Dynamo321 - No. FFXI was a total pain to play on a console. It had an interface designed for PCs (even though the PS2 version came out first).

Sounds interesting but I think I'll wait for the Xbox 360 version. This is the first MMORPG developed for consoles and Final Fantasy XIII did so well on the Xbox 360. It would be crazy for Square Enix not to make an Xbox 360 version.

"Square is setting out to put Final Fantasy XIV on the Xbox 360, but is hitting snags with the Xbox Live policy, reports VG247. Producer Hiromichi Tanaka credited the discussions with Microsoft for delaying an official announcement of the game. "For FFXIV, because 360 has its own policy with Xbox Live that is different from [the] internet, that's something we're in discussions with Microsoft [about], to come to an agreement," he said. "That's one of the reasons it's not going to be launched [simultaneously]." The PlayStation 3 would probably have a window of exclusivity even if Microsoft discussions weren't ongoing; the announcement was saved for Sony's E3 press conference, and only after did Square chime in to let us know that it was coming to other platforms. A name as big as Final Fantasy is sure to make Microsoft bend its internal rules a bit, so we'll definitely see the MMO hit at some point" ~ source 1up.com

I just wished SE wouldn't have played it so safe. I mean all the races are from FFXI and the art style and world are very similar. It kinds of makes it seems "meh" to me. I mean no single new race. They just changed their names, it's a bit silly.

This sucks... i was under the impression that PS3 would have access to FFXIV before PC users (think i remember hearing it at last years sony convention cant remember)... O and for everyone out there FFXIV WILL NOT be on the 360.. there are differences with Square Enix & Xbox Live system.

[quote]Who really wants to play a MMORPG on a console anyways when the PC will always reign supreme when it comes to them?[/quote] Games made for PC's will always reign supreme in their department because...you know, they were made for PC's. Now, show me an MMORPG designed, built from the ground up, and custom tailored for consoles THEN we'll talk about which one performs better. The closest thing to such a game I've played, in terms of similar systems, is Borderlands and I gotta say it played just fine.

ok about the 360 version. Im sure the PC version of this game is roughly 10 GB. Ya a PS3 Bluray can hold 60gb but usually never uses half of that. So how do you get a 10GB game on 360? Installation. 360s usually now have 60+GB HD. And ive seen 360 outperform the PS3 many times before. So im sure it wouldnt be too hard to bring FF 14 to 360, with no downgrading. And does anyone know for sure how the PS3 version of this game will look or run? But it wont come to 360, so drop it. But Im excited to see a major new MMO come to this gen consoles FINALLY! Most present and future MMOs look like clones. But after seeing the 40k MMO trailer (go look for yourself) 40k Dark Millennium is the only MMO on my radar. Maybe that and a space one. Tons of WOW and Lineage 2 clones out there. Not sure how people get excited about the same crap over and over.

@deedee_1 @JustPlainLucas @Kabo0m I would just like to point out that MMORPGs work without the discs and rely on the installed software on your HDD instead, so my guess is that FFXIV will probably work on PS3, PC and Xbox360 (Should it ever be released on Xbox) as long as you have the available HDD space. Edit: I really hope that you will be able to play on one server with all platforms as with FFXI.

@deedee_1 It could play it just fine if the game is more server side than disc side which it sounds like it isn't but either way the 360 CAN handle MMORPGs. Who really wants to play a MMORPG on a console anyways when the PC will always reign supreme when it comes to them?

@TheMistique your very wrong, Warhammer has always had the first 30 days free when you purchase the box, it even says so in the box of the original or collectors edition.... every MMO for which you have to purchase the physical copy of the box brings 30 free days with it.

@DeanoFantasy When I really get into an MMO, I buy fewer games per month and save a LOT of money because I am sufficiently entertained. This makes $15 per month totally worth it to me. Sure, my lifetime payments to WoW will be pretty darn high considering it's just one game, but how many games have you played that could sustain hours and hours of play per day and keep you entertained for several months or years. Plus, you're paying for the content that's constantly added.

There are still people walking around who complain about paying monthly fees in MMORPGs? I didn't think they still made people like that any more.
