Final Fantasy XIV goes online Sept. 30 on PC

$50 regular version of upcoming MMORPG arrives at end of third quarter; $75 collector's edition to offer early access; PS3 launch TBA.

At the 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo earlier this month, Square Enix showed off its upcoming massively multiplayer role-playing game Final Fantasy XIV. Today, the Japanese publisher dated the game, saying it would launch in North America on September 30 on the PC at a price point of $50. The PlayStation 3 version, which was on display at Sony's E3 2010 press conference, has not been given a release window beyond "2010," though it had been set for a simultaneous release with the PC edition.

For $25 more, Final Fantasy fans can pick up the collector's edition of FFXIV and get access to the game eight days early.
For $25 more, Final Fantasy fans can pick up the collector's edition of FFXIV and get access to the game eight days early.

Final Fantasy fanatics willing to pay $25 will be able to access the game eight days ahead of the masses, courtesy of the early access codes included in the $75 collector's edition of the game. (Square Enix did add the caveat that "timing of access subject to initial server capacity.") Besides the game disc and manual, included will be the following cache of goodies:

--A behind-the-scenes DVD with the obligatory documentary on the making of the game.
--A travel journal with concept art pages in which players can document their in-game wanderings.
--An in-game item called the "Onion Helm."
--A fully personalized "Right of Passage" certificate.
--Special cover illustrated by artist Yoshitaka Amano.
--An FFXIV-branded security token for use with regular password.

Final Fantasy XIV Online will be set in the realm of Eorzea, a world not seen before in any other installments in the franchise. Like in other MMORPGs, gamers will be able to explore the realm after selecting from a variety of races, combat classes, and professional skills. More information on Eorzea's lore and backstory can be found on the game's Web site.

Final Fantasy XIV will be the second installment in the long-running role-playing game to take on the MMORPG genre. The first such game, Final Fantasy XI, debuted on the PC in 2003 and found its way to the PlayStation 2 the next year. An Xbox 360 edition followed in 2006. In a unique twist, the game allowed players from all three platforms to play together in the same gameworld.

I heard from an rl bud that the new kotor mmo won't have a monthly fee. If that is so then how in the world will normal mmos even TRY to compete with that. Even if it did have the usual 15 a month, I would still take Bioware's mmo over this or WoW, but no monthly fee is just over kill.

That's a reasonable price for a collector's edition. It's better than some out there that charge +$100. The only exception to get a +$100 collector's edition is Starcraft II. That edition is stuffed with some cool things.

Also I admit that WOW got it right, the game is free but the service is $10/month. I wonder why FF doesn't do this???

I found extra characters in ffxi a must though because of limited space and limited auction listings. If you were a serious crafter good luck getting by without 3-4 characters.

@sircyrus You have a good point with early access and names. I heard there was a way to reserve old ffxi names, but that could have just been BS.

@Arghyeeho That would be the only positive thing about them carrying that over from FFXI. Extra characters are useless, aside from wanting to play different races (or using them as inventory mules), since one character can do everything. So I wouldn't be surprised to see them charge that fee again.

@sircyrus Well, they'd be paying more than $25 if you count the extra character slots(assuming they adopt the same alt model as 11)

Monthly fees are there to stay. It's not like MMOs are targeted to 13 years old anyway. 1 month of MMO is cheaper than 2 beers in a bar

I've been keeping an eye on this game, will be picking it up for sure. But the 8-days early for CE is pretty dumb. I understand staggering player access at the start helps with server stability in the early days, but 8 days is rather extreme for a game with unique names. That just means anyone willing to pay $25 extra will be snatching up as many names as they can on parked level 1 characters.

if there was no monthly fee the servers wouldnt be maintained as well as it normally would be. also there would be ads, i hate ads. i dont mind a monthly fee, its nottoo harsh for those with a yob. also, i hope they dont keep the ps3 version held up too long, and i hope the pc servers are the same as the ps3s, kinda like what they did with 11.

I hope we can get the Collectors Edition for the PS3, not for the early access but all the awesome stuff it comes with. That journal looks beautiful and I want that Onion Helm.

Free-to-play is such a con, though. The quality gap between games like City of Heroes or World of Warcraft, and Maple Story, or...whatever other Free MMO game is tremendous. The saying "You get what you pay for" in definitely evident to anyone that has tried both sides of the fence.

@ ItsBriskBaby probally not the mmos that offer the life time fee are normally the ones that die out completely after a year or go down hill by offering free to keep it alive

Square Enix should get with the times and make the subscription free-to-play based. From what I hear even Blizzard is considering making the change.

So many stingy people online. Undoubtedly these same people pay $100/month for cable TV with hundreds of TV channels they never watch.

There absolutely WILL be a monthly fee. So stop asking that question a billion times over. Stop crying about it as well. Their is a justified reason you pay the monthly fee for all MMORPGs.

It's their game series, so SE gets to name it how they want! lol.. Damn! the next one's alrighty gonna be out before I ever get my hands on a Ridill / Adaman Hauberk & of course Kraken Club!! (actually I had one in my possesion at one time we got off LoO back when that was possible, I shoulda kept it)..... @@ Is there gonna be a Fafnir in this one too? hahaa... Behemoth will be there most likely. I seriously wonder though, they're saying all this stuff about crafting your own weapons, etc.. how about getting Elite drops off mobs?

Looks like it will get maybe a million US subscribers in it's first month. Then after about 2-3 months 75% of the population will quit. Just like in the first FF MMO and every other MMO out there not named WOW. It will probably always have a strong Japanese subscriber base though.

I'm disappointed in the PS3 release info, however, with New Vegas and Black Ops coming out soon I can easily deal with it.

If there's no subscription fee I'm in. I don't play MMOs because I bounce around with games and wouldn't play them consistently enough to make it worth while.

Most of you will never pay $13 to play a MMO game with great servers and upgrades. You are willing to spend $60 for one game which you probably going to play 2-3 days and done.

Honestly, I've never played an MMO. Don't know how they work, what you do in them, nothing. Maybe I should get this to break the ice, and since it's Final Fantasy, a series im familiar with, it might make it all the more enjoyable.

I've been a FF fan since it's creation and I played the original FF11 MMO as a beta testing and then later as a player on the PS2. I had some fun with it for a while until WOW swiped me away. I'm looking forward to giving this new entry of FFXIV MMO a go. We'll see if it can loosen WOW's grip on me :)

Well, this a bit upsetting. By setting the release date of the PC version and not the PS3 version, they have effectively made a veiled announcement that the PS3 version is being delayed. I would buy it for the PC, but my computer can't handle it. Oh well, I've waited this long; I can wait a bit longer.

I'll pass... The only MMOs I'm interested in are Guild War 2 and Dark Millennium Online. The Old Republic will probably the best of all but I don't care for Star Wars. Final Fantasy? Meh!

Maybe i am missing out, maybe im bein smart with my money? Everyone has a different opinion just respect each others. Anyways only game i am ever gonna probably spend 15$ a month on is star wars the old republic if it lives up to the hype and the reviews are good.
