Final Fantasy XIV goes online Sept. 30 on PC

$50 regular version of upcoming MMORPG arrives at end of third quarter; $75 collector's edition to offer early access; PS3 launch TBA.

At the 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo earlier this month, Square Enix showed off its upcoming massively multiplayer role-playing game Final Fantasy XIV. Today, the Japanese publisher dated the game, saying it would launch in North America on September 30 on the PC at a price point of $50. The PlayStation 3 version, which was on display at Sony's E3 2010 press conference, has not been given a release window beyond "2010," though it had been set for a simultaneous release with the PC edition.

For $25 more, Final Fantasy fans can pick up the collector's edition of FFXIV and get access to the game eight days early.
For $25 more, Final Fantasy fans can pick up the collector's edition of FFXIV and get access to the game eight days early.

Final Fantasy fanatics willing to pay $25 will be able to access the game eight days ahead of the masses, courtesy of the early access codes included in the $75 collector's edition of the game. (Square Enix did add the caveat that "timing of access subject to initial server capacity.") Besides the game disc and manual, included will be the following cache of goodies:

--A behind-the-scenes DVD with the obligatory documentary on the making of the game.
--A travel journal with concept art pages in which players can document their in-game wanderings.
--An in-game item called the "Onion Helm."
--A fully personalized "Right of Passage" certificate.
--Special cover illustrated by artist Yoshitaka Amano.
--An FFXIV-branded security token for use with regular password.

Final Fantasy XIV Online will be set in the realm of Eorzea, a world not seen before in any other installments in the franchise. Like in other MMORPGs, gamers will be able to explore the realm after selecting from a variety of races, combat classes, and professional skills. More information on Eorzea's lore and backstory can be found on the game's Web site.

Final Fantasy XIV will be the second installment in the long-running role-playing game to take on the MMORPG genre. The first such game, Final Fantasy XI, debuted on the PC in 2003 and found its way to the PlayStation 2 the next year. An Xbox 360 edition followed in 2006. In a unique twist, the game allowed players from all three platforms to play together in the same gameworld.

Kind of bittersweet news. I'm going to play on PC and we only have one , so my fiance is going to play on PS3, but now it looks like we'll have to wait a bit to quest together.

@Born_Lucky If you have a rig that will run crysis and you already have a dual core and 9800 GT there is no way you would need to spend $500.00 to play this game.. Im sure you could run it at low-medium settings as it is. Learn computers.

With a dual core @2.8GHz and a 9800 GT - the game is unplayable. It would cost $500 to upgrade my rig (which runs Crysis) - just to play this one game. It ain't happening.

@ vicsrealms From what i heard u will be able to solo the quests but like in WoW u will still need ppl to do the group quests and dungeons. I played FF11 since the first day it came out on ps2 i liked it alot i played for 5 years but after beating the gods is sky i was kinda getting bored lol Im looking forward to this game on ps3 and $15 a month is not bad and im sure they will have an option so u can pay for 6months or 12months with a discount. Look at the Xbox users they pay $50 a year for xbox live just so they can play the $60 games they buy online and most of them dont wine about it

The game looks awesome.. sadly i wont be playing it because my taste in games has change and I no longer have interest in these type of games ( MMO & the battle systems they have ) To whoever plays it have fun! Looks great! they just need to at least make the monthly fee lower for you FFOnline boys and girls. Its only fair.

WHAT?????? Dammit, they promised simultaneously launch on PS3 & PC. This is the worst gaming news I've heard all year. Why the delay? I don't understand how it could be ready for PC and not the PS3.

@maverick_76 What do you mean WoW is free? You need to buy the game and all of its expansions if you want to experience all the content. Also it is not $10 a month, more like $14...

@Perd1t1on I believe it's going to be around $15'ish/month In General: Scrawlfx posted an update saying the NA release is set to 9/22 for the PC CE, 9/30 for the PC standard edition, and...... 3/2011 for the PS3 version. That's a pretty long wait for the console release, and a huge difference from their intended simultaneous NA release. :'( I might actually have to shop for a PC now.

Monthly price is $13.00 USD a month. All F2P have cash shops. And they are one hell of a grind fest. You can go play those if you want, I will enjoy paying to keep that trash off of FFXIV. And as for Final Fantasy XI, 310,000 players still play that game. Though it is has probably went up a bit since they just recently raised the level cap to 80. Playstation 3 version will not be out until 2011, most sites are pointing at a March Release. And as for it coming to 360, Microsoft is trying to get SE to put it on the Gold Level so that some of the $13.00 you would pay goes to Microsoft. SE pretty much told them to kiss their ass. Silver service level or nothing.

The monthly subscription fee will be £8.99 ($12.99) with additional characters available for £2.10 ($3.00) a month. A maximum of eight characters can be registered on any one account. Each account is eligible for one free retainer (a non-playable character that maintains item sales and storage when users are logged out) with each additional retainer costing £0.70 ($1.00). Ripped from: << LINK REMOVED >> Although I think it's stupid that you have to pay for more than 1 character, there's really no point in having more than one since your character can switch jobs.

@Ciphas They have finished the story and the character design (clothes mainly as they weren't satisfied about how they were dressed). In other words: They have wasted 1 year in the production. Expect vs xiii to be released by 2011 fall in japan.

Any MMO without a fee has lacked in content heavily and polish. I realize it's Bioware and not the same makers as there last MMO but that has to be in the back of some peoples minds, it was a disaster. That and Bioware makes some incredibly initially buggy games, might make for a shaky start to an MMO attempt. Could surprise me though.
