Final Fantasy XIV goes online Sept. 30 on PC

$50 regular version of upcoming MMORPG arrives at end of third quarter; $75 collector's edition to offer early access; PS3 launch TBA.

At the 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo earlier this month, Square Enix showed off its upcoming massively multiplayer role-playing game Final Fantasy XIV. Today, the Japanese publisher dated the game, saying it would launch in North America on September 30 on the PC at a price point of $50. The PlayStation 3 version, which was on display at Sony's E3 2010 press conference, has not been given a release window beyond "2010," though it had been set for a simultaneous release with the PC edition.

For $25 more, Final Fantasy fans can pick up the collector's edition of FFXIV and get access to the game eight days early.
For $25 more, Final Fantasy fans can pick up the collector's edition of FFXIV and get access to the game eight days early.

Final Fantasy fanatics willing to pay $25 will be able to access the game eight days ahead of the masses, courtesy of the early access codes included in the $75 collector's edition of the game. (Square Enix did add the caveat that "timing of access subject to initial server capacity.") Besides the game disc and manual, included will be the following cache of goodies:

--A behind-the-scenes DVD with the obligatory documentary on the making of the game.
--A travel journal with concept art pages in which players can document their in-game wanderings.
--An in-game item called the "Onion Helm."
--A fully personalized "Right of Passage" certificate.
--Special cover illustrated by artist Yoshitaka Amano.
--An FFXIV-branded security token for use with regular password.

Final Fantasy XIV Online will be set in the realm of Eorzea, a world not seen before in any other installments in the franchise. Like in other MMORPGs, gamers will be able to explore the realm after selecting from a variety of races, combat classes, and professional skills. More information on Eorzea's lore and backstory can be found on the game's Web site.

Final Fantasy XIV will be the second installment in the long-running role-playing game to take on the MMORPG genre. The first such game, Final Fantasy XI, debuted on the PC in 2003 and found its way to the PlayStation 2 the next year. An Xbox 360 edition followed in 2006. In a unique twist, the game allowed players from all three platforms to play together in the same gameworld.

Paying extra to play the game early isn't a good way to promote it. Should be like Medal of Honor where you just pre-order and you can try it earlier. One very important question is preventing me from even trying this game though. Do we have to pay monthly for console versions?

Oh I don't know... maybe Bioware? I haven't played any of their crappy overrated shooters and PC games, but at least they're good at what they do, even if I don't like shooters or breaking my back hunching over the PC for a game. SE on the other hand... Just look at this gen. Frickin embarrassing is what they are. Though of course as I always say, it's gamers' fault first and foremost.

Oh... if only I had the time... I have heard that soloing will be more of a focus this time around where you only need to part up for certain quests. The problems I had with FFXI and WoW was that all of my clan friends were addicts. By the time I got back online they were all 20 levels ahead of me and this kept happening until I decided to quit because randoms groups made it hard to stay interested. Especially having to wait around and convince people to join you, then hope they don't ditch after they get that "rare item" they went in there to get. I sort-of was hoping FFXIV would take the free-to-play route and charge for micro-transactions to get past certain points. That way I could get into the game without having a monthly commitment. It doesn't sound like this is the plan, though.
In a unique twist, the game allowed players from all three platforms to play together in the same gameworld.
That was one of the coolest aspects of playing FFIX. I played on PS2, while most of my clan friends were on PC. It was cross-platform gaming without Windows Live and the like.

I'm stuck between this and The Old Republic, they both look awesome, I suppose I could start this and if I don't like it try The Old Republic when it releases next year.

I wouldn't support Square Enix even if they payed me. I look more towards developers that have innovation AND are good at what they do.

I've been unable to get into MMO's since FFXI and SWG (pre-cu) so this news is quite exciting. I originally planned to wait at least 3 months after its release before buying the game, however I've just pre-ordered the collectors edition which is not something I normally do. Hopefully it'll help restore my faith in MMO's after the horrid time I've had with WoW and its many clones.

The beta was quite fun, and they've (surprisingly) made it much more enjoyable for people with a more casual playing style, which is fantastic since I'm older and working now. Pre-ordered collector's edition - I can't wait! @mischiefmeerkat You might want to do some research before ranting. FFXIV has been in the process for quite some time. It is also an online game, not part of the "normal" series. Comparing XIII to XIV is like comparing "Need for Speed" with "Need for Speed World Online." They just aren't similar. @Born_Lucky If your rig plays Crysis, it will play this. I'm in the closed beta, and this plays on my HP HDX Premium laptop, which is not in ANY means made for gaming. You simply need to turn down detail.

Playing online mmorpgs will make you sick honestly i cant encourage anyone enough that you should stay away from games like this & WoW, theres nothing more empty feeling than dedicating than almost all your time & money for these games for 3 years to get a whatever 80 level paladin or so and then stop playing it. MMORPG games are a waste of time play story based offline RPG games and other games instead. These games will make you sick and hooked in a bad way, im not talking of experience but i tried a WoW trial for 14 days and played around 9 days trying to like it, its just a bunch of stats overload and unsatisfying key pressing nothing more. I feel sorry for players who ruin their lives with these games

I hope it isn't going to be one of those games that you need a degree in, to be able to play. Still, looking forward to giving it a go.

@cashomoney There's a small market for PC games in Japan, thus there are few PC-exclusive JP developers. Less PC-centric developers means less experience, thus, their inexperience in optmising PC games. I don't know which JP PC games you were playing; I'd hazard a guess they were coded using engines from western developers, such as Valve, Crytek or Epic. Check the credits to see where the graphics engine came from before you make wild claims such as "the coding is usually better".

@Shtinky errrrr i actually find that Japanese games run better on a pc... the coding is usually better... NA games are crap for efficiency in comparison... however ummm if the game is poorly ported to pc in the first place fps is of course going to be lower. But thats the case for any game no matter place of creation. But yea... can't wait for this to hit the shelves and such, definitly worth a try.

@wumpscutnut Japanese PC games tend to not be properly optimised for PC's. I wouldn't be surprised if someone could run Crysis fine on their PC but not this.
