Final Fantasy XIII Trilogy Heading to PC Starting in October

You'll soon be able to play Final Fantasy XIII, XIII-2, and Lightning Returns on PC.

The Final Fantasy XIII trilogy of games--that is, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XIII-2, and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII--is headed to PCs beginning next month.

First out of the gate will be XIII on October 9. It'll be released digitally through Steam and Square Enix's online store for $15.99. If you know you'll be picking it up through Steam, you can pre-purchase it prior to release and get a small 10 percent discount that brings its price down to $14.39.

There's no word on whether any improvements are being made for these PC releases, but XIII (and presumably the following two) will, at the very least, offer support for Steam trading cards.

Likewise, we don't yet have prices or release dates for XIII-2 or Lightning Returns; Square Enix will only say that all three will be out by next spring. This follows the company discussing its desire to release the franchise on PC earlier this year.

The XIII games are not considered by most to be the high point of the Final Fantasy series, but this does represent the first time they'll be made available on platforms other than Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

If you've played these games before or are simply not interested, there's other Final Fantasy news to get excited about today: Final Fantasy XV got a new trailer and a release date for its demo, and we found out Final Fantasy Agito is making its way to PlayStation Vita (at least in Japan).

The system requirement and recommended specs for XIII follow below.

Minimum:

  • OS: Windows XP SP2 or later
  • Processor: 2GHz Dual Core CPU
  • Memory: 1 GB RAM
  • Graphics: Nvidia Geforce 8 Series / ATI Radeon HD 2000 series VRAM 256MB or later
  • DirectX: Version 9.0c
  • Hard Drive: 30 GB available space
  • Sound Card: Sound card compatible with DirectX 9.0c

Recommended:

  • OS: Windows Vista / 7 / 8
  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad (2.66 GHz) / AMD Phenom II X4 (2.8 GHz) processor
  • Memory: 1 GB RAM
  • Graphics: Nvidia Geforce GTX 460 / ATI Radeon HD 5870
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Hard Drive: 30 GB available space
  • Sound Card: DirectX 11 compatible sound card
  • Additional Notes: A game controller using Xinput is recommended for this game. (If using a DirectInput based controller, please use the driver side key configuration to adjust settings as required.)

as far as i got into 13 & 13\2 i never saw much point. it was just mashing auto-battle over and over. might as well have just made it another cgi movie to watch.

It's really exciting to see them put out a flagship series. Everyone should email them and give their support. Square North American Email: support_na_cs@square-enix.com Final Fantasy games have a unique Anime art that often spans traditional fantasy and modern sci fi styles, heartwarming story, classic turn-based combat, and huge amounts of play and replayability. For many game collectors, they are a worth edition... but to collect every classic console to have the original versions of Final Fantasy games is often impractical. These downloadable / Steam Cloud releases modernize their product and help them ensure their legacy.

<< LINK REMOVED >> If you were making millions of dollars off of a series, you would be selling it too.... even if you didn't like it very much. You'll understand economic and things like that when you get older.

I have been playing XIII for a while, and I can say that playing it with Japanese voice over makes the game so much better. And no Leona Lewis anywhere because you use the original Japanese soundtrack! Yay!

<< LINK REMOVED >> That doesn't fix how incredibly bad the game still is without Vanille and Lightning and Fang ruining it with their english dubbing.

If they really wanted to make a lot of money, they'd just remake 7 already.

Even if I'm not a huge fan of XIII, this is still exciting to me. Hopefully this is a trend and we will get 9, 10, 12 and even 15 on PC.

Well, at least we can mod the crap out of it then. Expect Lightning to be replaced by Hi-Res 3DS Max reditions of Cloud Strife, and subsequent imports of other models. Hurray...

Very cool. I enjoyed the 13 series. After Chapter 8, 13-1 was so fun. 13-2's gameplay was weak but the story and cutscenes were beautiful. 13-3 had strong gameplay, but had many other weak points, but still a 13 game. It was fun. Looking forward to playing 13-1 for the 3rd time lol

If I can get a save editor to start myself out where I was on the PS3 or even import the save I would love to finish up this game.

Lighting is most welcome on PC, I've been waiting a long time for this, I already own the three games on PS3 but will definitely get these again for my favorite gaming system, I hope this means we will be getting all future Final Fantasy games on PC as well, I'm currently in love with XIV and don't want to move away from my desktop anymore!... ^_^

This is currently #6 on the Steam chart. Meanwhile FF 4, which is actually out and not just a pre-order, is down at #50!? Come on Master Race, we're smarter than this!!

<< LINK REMOVED >> As much as I loved FFIV in the past, it has aged and with it being older more people may have played it. There are many people that may have missed the game or simply want to play it on PC for better visuals.

Why does a 4 year old game need 30 GBs of HD space ? How many uncompressed cutscenes and audio files are in this game anyway ?

@faizanhd

FF13 features about 70 minutes of extraordinarily high quality 1080p cutscenes, honestly the FF13 trilogy prerendered cutscenes might be the most gorgeous things I've seen in all of gaming.

I think it took up about 38GBs on the PS3 version and the Xbox 360 version required 3 DVDs and had to compress the cutscenes.

Things that will need modded...
-More interactive backgrounds and branching paths (re-work the maps a bit).
-Better voice acting.
-Option for Japanese with English subtitles.
-Better music.
-Better story.
-Make NORA members less annoying.
-Interactive towns.
-Make the attractions at Nautilus (City of Dreams) interactive and accessible.
-Ability to backtrack or teleport to previous maps.
-Ability to bypass tutorials.
-No level caps during the story mode.

-Menu options unlocked from the start.
-Change level up system to be more like FFX's Sphere Grid (non-linear).

<< LINK REMOVED >> I'm not sure how much you know about modding games, but a lot of that stuff isn't really stuff that can be changed with mods. Even if it could FFXIII doesn't have the community or tools behind it to allow for these kinds of massive structural overhauls.

<< LINK REMOVED >>

- voice acting is OK

- You have those as DLC

- The music at first is weird and a departure from previous FF but the music is still fine to me especially in FF XIII-2

- Story is fine and not really different from any other FF

- well you don't see them that much so whatever

- That may be a little more interesting but since in XIII you're a wanted enemy of public safety it would be wierd, in XIII-2 you can talk to some people but since you move through time it would be a nightmare because some stuff isn't there in a different time line etc

- yes that would've been very cool like in FFVII

- Not really a necessity in XIII and both sequel this isn't a problem

- I think you can

- That would be hard in XIII since it is a pain to level up without the Growth Egg and well you know, it is something to do in post story mode ....

- k ?

- it still linear until you have access to the sphere to let you go into the other's sphere grid and then ... every caracter can learn the same habilities which is kinda boring too.
