According to a Famitsu article detailing the event, the main reason for Tanaka's departure from the publisher is personal health issues. Tanaka said that he has to cope with a major illness, which he wishes not to specify, that had led to his final decision to leave the company. He also stated that he will be returning to the Japanese game development scene as a solo creator.

His replacement is Akihiko Matsui, who is known as the battle designer for Final Fantasy XIV. Tanaka was a veteran in the company, having joined in 1983. He was one of the developers responsible for the creation of Final Fantasy I, II, and III. He also took the helm as a producer and battle designer for Xenogears and Chrono Cross.

In related news, the Vana Fest 2012 event highlighted the announcement of a new Final Fantasy XI expansion called Seekers of Adoulin. Apart from new map areas and quests, the expansion will be introducing two new classes: the geomancer and rune fencers. The expansion will be out in 2013.

I played FFXI daily for almost 7 years, and it's without a doubt the greatest game I've played in 30+ years of gaming. I wish I was still playing it today!

@BoSnerdly as frustrating as FFXI is at times, it certainly was unique and arguably my favorite MMO ever. I had finally forced myself off the addiction and unbearable withdrawal, but the words "new expansion with two new classes" are giving me the FF itch again :).

I'm very sorry to hear this. I hope his illness isn't what I'm thinking and that he will be cured.

Wishing him the best, hopefully this is a recoverable illness. I have enjoyed a lot of his games, especially FFXI. We're just going to pretend FFXIV never happened :)

Man, what time is it?

*looks down at watch*

Strange, it's 6:50, and I don't give a damn.

Square made me stop caring about them.

I group them up with EA, except EA's done some good stuff two or three times.

Square's ONLY (And I do mean only, as every Chrono Trigger and SMRPG are ass) good game was FF6

@Albaficas It's not an opinion. It's fact.FFs 7-12 were made with weaboos in mind.FF6 was made with the idea of creating an actual engaging world. Also, aside from space, steam punk settings are the best places to set anything. Didn't you know?

Or is the love of FF7 clouding (pun not intended) your vision.

Look, FF7 WAS good. Until after the first disc.

In the first disc, Cloud was an approachable, arrogant dick who didn't care who got hurt, so long as he obtained his goal. He was essentially the Japanese video game equivalence to Riddick. Now, Square noticed they were doing something right and said, "Well, herp a derp, why would we want anyone to LIKE any character other than Cloud?" So they then focused all the character developing on Cloud, leaving everyone else to collect dust.

At the end, Cloud still has the personality of a pan fried kipper.

Surprised that neither the article nor comments mention this, but many FFXI players don't think Tanaka's resignation is due to illness. He's reviled among the playerbase, likely the single most hated employee (now ex-employee) of Square Enix, and his poor direction of FFXI in the past 2 years or so reduced the playerbase by thosuands. Right now, the hottest topic on the official FFXI forum is BYE TANAKA! (http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxi/threads/24637-BYE-TANAKA!). A poster in that topic articulates what many players believe is the real story:"Tanaka would be forced out of the game due to his inability to listen to players and poor vision for a MMORPG [if he had not resigned]. He has proven to be very capable at making single player console RPGs, and completely inadequate at making MMORPGs. He treated FFXI and FFXIV as just another single player console RPG, but with many players, and look what it did to both of those games. Community members stated several times that things were broken and their "vision" of both games were flawed, he refused to listen, even to his own test server / beta players. They took him off FFXIV to get that game fixed, and so far it's worked extremely well. Now that he's messed up FFXI even more (since abyssea) their pulling him off to increase profitability. His choice was retirement or being humiliated by being made the executive manager for archival of file 13."

Tanaka was also the demon behind FFXIV.

@Blue_Donkeykong The way your post is written is misguiding and overly demonizing of Tanaka. The very thread you linked to is largely filled with people defending Tanaka. Yes there are a fair amount of posts saying something along the lines of "Tanaka won't be missed as a FFXI developer but I wish him no ill will as a person. Get better soon." And yes prior to his retirement announcement there were plenty of complaints, memes and jokes about him in regards to new FFXI content. However I do not think this reflects the view of the majority of the player base (the thread you linked is evidence to that). It was a relatively small but vocal portion of the players who were overestimating Tanaka's influence on the game.

As to "many players" doubting the fact that he's ill: I think you quoted the only post in that entire thread that brings up this idea (the same poster brings it up again a 2nd time). I'd like to bring up another quote "Then come vana'fest, the man looked pretty damn ill. Seriously, look at a pic from a year ago or so, then watch his vana'fest footage. I was talking about it with my friend and wife, and at the end he retired due to "health problems"."

Lastly I'd like to point out that the new expansion "Seekers of Adoulin" has to have been in development for a while now, meaning Tanaka had a hand in its creation and is in part responsible for its existence. FFXI is an aging game so I doubt a full expansion was an easy sell.

All that said, I do find myself in the camp of hoping that the game will improve now that he's gone. I just don't expect anything drastic.

@Blue_Donkeykong "Demon"? I think your choice of word there betrays your intent in this matter. Reading through that forum thread, I see relatively little ill will towards Tanaka. A few people who disagreed with his direction, but generally a lot of respect for his life's work.

I don't see much in the way of revilement for him in the playerbase, nor do I see any indication that he was hated at Square Enix.

It's not an unusual thing to start suffering health problems when you reach the age of 50.

Could be the radiation from Japan's blow reactor core in Fukishima?

I heard the food is contaminated over there and nobody is steping up about it.

I wish him the best. Never played FFXI but I know quite a few fans of it and it's always a shame to see an industry veteran leaving the company he helped define.

@tachsniper Obviously you haven't seen people close to you battling with cancer, and I really wish you will never witness

such situations, but you know, this isn't an excuse to be a inhumane.

@tachsniper The guy is seriously ill and you insult his name simply because your beloved Final Fantasy franchise wasn't treated in the way you wanted it to be?

I fear for humanity if the future looks anything like you.

What can one say to this, except to wish him a speedy recovery?

People, please try to keep petty gaming politics out of this.
