SquareSoft announced that its PlayOnline network service will carry a monthly fee for its users. The first PlayStation 2 game to fully implement the PlayOnline network will be Final Fantasy XI and it will cost under 1,000 yen (US$9.23) a month for online gamers. Square expects to have over two million subscribers to its network by that date. Nihon Kezai Shimbun reports that Square will begin featuring both PlayStation 2 and PC software utilizing the service sometime next year.

On a related note, Square official could not confirm reports that Final Fantasy XI would be playable exclusively online, with only essential elements of the game stored on the game disc.
