Final Fantasy VII rereleased for PS3, PSP

E3 2009: Square Enix role-playing classic launches three consecutive days of PlayStation Network updates.

LOS ANGELES--The entire game industry is working overtime because of this week's Electronic Entertainment Expo, and the people working on Sony's PlayStation Network store are no different. Ordinarily updated only on Thursdays, the online storefront for the PlayStation 3 and PSP is getting three new volleys of content this week for North American consumers.

Has the statute of limitations on spoilers for this one passed yet?

Sony opened up the release spigot Tuesday with the addition of two hit PlayStation games to the downloadable catalog: Final Fantasy VII and Medal of Honor. Final Fantasy VII is the oldest game in the Square Enix series yet to be remade, but at least those clamoring for Cloud and Sephiroth will be able to relive the original story for $9.99. Meanwhile, Electronic Arts' original World War II shooter Medal of Honor will cost the more standard $5.99.

The rerelease isn't the only Final Fantasy-related content new to the PlayStation store. Sony also put up new themes, trailers, and wallpaper for the upcoming PSP fighting spin-off Final Fantasy: Dissidia. Rounding out the releases are free downloadable content for Dynasty Warriors: Strikeforce and a slew of E3 trailers for Uncharted 2, Fat Princess, Heavy Rain, and more.

@BlueScar The game weighs in at 1.32gb so you will need a larger card to store it. 2gb cards are pretty reasonable now...I would go for it!

Bluescar... No, your memory stick is too small. You need room for at least 1.4 GB to play it. It's a huge game.

thanks for all your answers! so this FF7 is from ps1, not the psp crisis core version. thanks for clearing everything up. no wonder it costs a lot less :) i also saw some games that are much cheaper in PSN than in local stores, i guess this is a way of saving money? :)

Final Fantasy 7 can already be purchased by anyone on their PC. Also, I think people don't realize that this version of Final Fantasy 7 is not being released on Blu-ray. It is simply being released as a download online, just like it was in Japan. This isn't anything special. If you want to play Final Fantasy 7 right now, you would be better off buying the PC version. If Square Enix is making the decision to "milk" the FF7 franchise, then that is their decision, because it is a business decision. But in all honesty, I think Square Enix needs to do a better job of "milking" since there are far more users of Xbox Live in the Western markets than there are PSN users. Japan already has seen this release, so if Square Enix is going to release this game in the western markets, it would be virtually effortless for them to include the Xbox Live Arcade service. Microsoft needs to get their act together with this one. I sure hope the reason why Xbox Live Arcade didn't see this release was because of the stupid "size limit" that Microsoft put on Xbox Live Arcade, except during "special" circumstances. If Square Enix asked, I hope Microsoft would allow FF7 to be considered "special."

I've played RPGs for a long time... but when VII came out, those that didn't play this genre jumped on the bandwagon.

@finaleve: what's the point in saying you don't get why people like one of the most popular games ever made? The answer is obvious: you're just missing something. If it's that popular then the flaw lies with you, not the majority.

@akira_hayase: $9.99 is the correct price, no additional charges. That's the price in dollars so I'm assuming you're on the US store.

Lets think about it this way for a second...What if Squares Main Goal (besides milking us for $9.99) is to see if a remake would sell? With Advent Children Bluray and This PSN release of FFVII what if they just want to see if a remake for this FF title will sell? Have you guys thought of that?

Akira it's ff7 for ps1, so yes it is 9.99, but there is an additional fee of taxes and what not so it adds up to around 11.50. PSN is using US currency.

i'm quite new to the PSN store thing, sorry if this sounds stupid, but i just went on the psn store from my psp, and it saids for FF7 it's for $9.99. are taxes included and is there additional charges? because it seems a bit odd as stores sell their UMD for $49.99+ but in PSN, it's only $9.99? and what currency is the PSN using? thanks

Ok, yes its just a port of a game most of us already have, but what you're forgetting is that it can be put onto your psp. So basically its 10 bucks for a portable ffvii! I bought it last night.

So maybe it isn't a remake, but I have never gotten the chance to complete this game so this is great for me. Sure I could of bought the hard copy, but that costs $60 which is crazy for such an old game. $9.99 is much more reasonable, and the fact that it transfers to PSP is a bonus!

Hear that FF7 fans? The game you can never let go of, no matter how poorly written the story was, is being re-released in all it's original, cube-graphics glory! The phrase "Let it go, it's not as good as it was when you were 7." comes to mind.

ppl this is not saying FF7 is being remade just re-released on PSN. if they do remake it( which i REALLY want), it definatly wont cost $9.99. but i think this could be a good sign they are trying to milk every1 to buy the old ff7 and once every1 does, then they can announce a remake :D

This is a bad idea. I would rather play an HD remake of the game than to play a lazy port. This does not necessarily rule out the possibility of a Final Fantasy VII remake. In fact, the Final Fantasy VII staff has already refused to rule out the possibility of a full-fledged remake for PS3. That may happen after Final Fantasy Versus XIII is released in Japan.

@karnovrpg Or simply never had a PS1/2/3. Anyway, while this is all well and good, I would much rather have that fabled remake of it, or (even better) said fabled remake along with FFVII-2. Now THAT would be something worth getting excited over, rather than this MMO nonsense they're going with.
