It will take "a few years" for Final Fantasy VII to appear on iOS and Android, Square Enix has said.

Following the announcement that the publisher is bringing Final Fantasy VI to smartphones later this year--Final Fantasy I through V are already available to download--Square Enix producer Takashi Tokita has said to Shacknews that space issues mean the first 3D entry in the series won't be coming to mobiles anytime soon.

"Unfortunately, it's not that it's not impossible for us to develop Final Fantasy 7 for mobile," Tokita said. "It's that currently, space will be an issue. Phones won't be able to contain the space it takes. It's over a gigabyte. People are probably going to have to wait a few years."

Final Fantasy VII was originally released for PSOne in 1997, making headlines at the time for shipping on three CD-ROM discs. A recent PC re-release of Final Fantasy VII on Steam clocked in at over 3GB.

"It's definitely going to be years before we do the [mobile] port," Tokita added.

The next game in the series, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, will be released in February 2014. For more information on the game, check out GameSpot's recent preview.
