Now Playing: Nintendo Switch My Way – Final Fantasy VII & Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Trailer

Nintendo has indicated that we may not have long to wait before beloved RPG Final Fantasy VII is available on the Switch. In a new, rather short commercial, the game is shown on the handheld hybrid console, with the video's description reading: "Final Fantasy VII coming soon!"

Final Fantasy developer and publisher Square Enix originally revealed its intention to bring the game to the Switch in September 2018, when it was announced for the platform alongside Final Fantasy IX, the X and X-2 remaster, and Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age. However, they only gave a vague "2019" release window. While "coming soon" doesn't exactly give us a specific release date, at least we know we won't be waiting until the end of the year for it.

Square Enix previously confirmed that these versions of the Final Fantasy games will be based on recent ports either to other consoles or PC--obviously, this is not the in-development Final Fantasy VII remake. Final Fantasy VII was released for PC in 2013, with the game also available on the PlayStation Store digitally. Along with the Switch release, these games will also be making the jump to Xbox One, which is a first for a number of them.

Other Final Fantasy games on their way to Switch include the compilation game World of Final Fantasy and an updated version of GameCube title Crystal Chronicles.

Ouch... the video clearly shows that the game is not taking up the whole screen. Square please don't release it like iOS and not taking up all the screen of the device.

Now if we can get VII remake news.....

Avatar image for tsunami2311

they are really milking FFVII, might be another decade before the FFVII remake happens. then again I not sure I want to see who the butcher the gameplay

Avatar image for PrpleTrtleBuBum

Every release makes the game seem a bit cheaper. When it was PSX it was like godly 10/10 mega novel. Now its like "play it while youre sitting on a toilet swiping left and right for 5 bucks"

Atleast Cloud finally makes some sense in Smash

Still one of the best games ever made at the time, blocky field character models aside. It's still a pretty great game with a fantastic soundtrack.

You should really fact check your dates. Final Fantasy VII was released for pc well before 2013. The game was first released in 1998 for windows 98.

fact check? gamespot?

I have FF7 and FF8 for PC I preorder them both, and the PC verison were uttlerly inferior dont even get me started on how bad the butcher the music this "midi" verisons of music

@wingd: when I read that I immediatelly wanted to log in and write the same comment you wrote. Glad other people also noticed this oversight.

Yeah, when I read that I was thinking "I'm pretty sure there was a PC version long before 2013".

Figuring most Gamespot staff were probably still in the single digits age wise in '98, I guess its an understandable oversight =p

@wingd: Yup! I still have my original copy, complete with weird box

FF8 as well. Weird they ported FF8 to PC but don't seem to want to bring it elsewhere.

This would be fine if Square and Nintendo were only charging $10 or less, but seriously how many times are typical gamers going to blindly rebuy FFVII for $17 or $20 on yet another platform?

Avatar image for girlusocrazy

@mbrogz3000: Somebody's never played it before I guess. I played it on PSOne, PC, PSP/Vita, I think I'm good.

Still neat to see it on a Nintendo system.

Vita could do this in 2012 (9 months before Wii U had even come out). Better than Switch in fact because of the Vita's OLED screen.

I thought Cloud dressing up for Don Corneo was just a joke. Never thought it would be an omen.

This must make it one of the most ported games in history, God knows how many platforms this is now available on. Hopefully this also portends to FF7 remake also being available on Switch which can only be good for other Final Fantasy/Squenix remakes in the future.

Just want the date for IX. Already have VII on ps4 and didnt like X X-2.

Avatar image for sakaixx

Wonder why they only report switch ver. Xbone ver is also on the way if anyone cared

Even though I have it twice already (On original PS and PS Classic), I kinda feel like I should buy it for the Switch just to finally have it on a Nintendo system. I remember the day when FFVII was supposed to be exclusive to Nintendo 64, but because Nintendo was growing ever more stubborn, they lost it to Sony.

Now... if SE could just find that source code for FFVIII....

Nice. One of my all time favourite games. Will definitely play it again on the Switch.

I've always thought FF7 was over rated and more a success because of timing more than anything. I much preferred the games that followed it. But I would happily rebuy FF7 off the eshop for Switch as it would be an amazing handheld/portable title. Now if only we could get a remake of (or just a new) Tactics! That would be amazing on Switch.

Avatar image for gotrekfabian

@ZIMdoom: At it's time of release, FF7 was an amazing experience which very few games could hold a candle to. The materia system is probably the franchise's best to date even if the actual turn based combat was (of course) superceded and the story, mostly because of Sephiroth, was one of the best. Sephiroth is easily one of the most memorable and best realised villains in video games, TV and film and not just FF. I'm guessing that you didn't play the game at release and, had you done so, would realise that it really isn't overrated at all and that 22 years after it originally launched it is still an amazing game even it it has been bettered. Gaming really wouldn't be the same today had games like FF7 not stretched the boundaries of what was then possible.

Avatar image for ZIMdoom

@gotrekfabian: you would guess wrong. I was a FF fan going back to the NES days. I bought the PS at launch and FF7 was one of my my anticipated games at the time and I bought it at launch. I played the hell out of it which is why I’m far more interested in this switch news than the PS4 remake. Yes, FF7 was amazing at the time, as you said. I also agree that the material system holds up very well as does Sephiroth as a good villain. However, the hodgepodge graphics are bad a lot of the time due to how the game went through development. Even for the time they were bad at times. The story for the game is terrible and I don’t care who disagrees with me on that. You are literally just chasing Sephirtoh from one location to another as the game throws plot and story at you at each new location. Sorry, but that just isn’t good RPG story telling IMHO. The story from almost every other FF game after was superior. The thing to remember is FF7 came out at a time when gaming was cracking into the mainstream, when there wasn’t much ROG competition for consoles, when discs allowed a much greater game experience to be made, and for a new console that really had a lot to prove and changed gaming as we know it forever. So yes, FF7 was a fine game at the time. But I think it is still popular and people have such nostalgia for it less because it was truly great and more because it was the right game at the right moment in time. Not because the game is actually the best FF or one of the best RPGs of that generation...or any

Avatar image for gotrekfabian

@ZIMdoom: I think that it will be good for you to replay the game if you think that chasing Sephiroth is all the story was as there were plenty of subplots and character back stories which added to the overall experience. As for the graphics, I disagree. The first 3D FF as well as being one of the first 3d games ever (3d gaming only commenced about a year before and games were few and far between which weren't realised in full 3d) made this an amazing experience. It was also a game which would give over 100 hours of gameplay if you sought out epic bosses and mini games which was an extreme rarity. FF7 undoubtedly changed the map for games and still holds up as a great experience today.

Avatar image for brightamethyst

@ZIMdoom: Agreed. FF7 is a good game, but it doesn't even come close to living up to the hype. It's not even the best FF, let alone the best game, or even best JRPG ever.

Avatar image for silv3rst0rm

Square is about to "Limit Break" their FF7 fans indeed...

Avatar image for Ryusui

If only Square-Enix could be bothered to put a new translation in it.

Avatar image for Mando44646

World of Final Fantasy is not a "compilation game." It is already out and has been for a while

Avatar image for aross2004

@Mando44646: Would have been better if they referred to it as a mash-up.

Avatar image for lionheartssj1

Can't wait to replay these on the go.

Avatar image for Xristophoros

@lionheartssj1: vita has ff i through x... wake up.

Avatar image for lionheartssj1

@Xristophoros: Not everyone has, nor wants a Vita.

Avatar image for normanislost

@Xristophoros: maybe he has a switch and doesn't have a vita? wake up

Avatar image for sakaixx

@lionheartssj1: you can already do that years ago... On mobile.. its official release btw not emulation
