Final Fantasy Tactics assaults iPhone this week

Port of highly acclaimed strategy RPG to cost $15.99.

Fans of 1998's critically acclaimed role-playing game, Final Fantasy Tactics, will be able to relive job-changing, Ivalice cross-country traveling, and Lucavi demon-slaying shenanigans once again on the iPhone. According to the game's official Facebook page, the fan favorite strategy RPG will be out on August 4 on the iTunes store. This version of the game is based on the PSP port subtitled The War of the Lions.

Will this port thrive on the App Store or die in obscurity?
Will this port thrive on the App Store or die in obscurity?

The game will cost $15.99, which is slightly more than most iPhone and iPad apps offered on the online store. For comparison, the top 10 games on the App Store as of August 1 cost between $0.99 and $1.99. The game is also listed as not being a universal app; the iPad version will be out "this autumn."

This version of the game will also have an autosave function. If players were to get a phone call, the game will automatically save the last point they were at in the game. The US version will have the English character voices during cutscenes a la the PSP version. Unlike that version, however, the multiplayer mode is cut off from the iPhone version.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions on the PSP was praised for its great and involving story; fantastic character customization system; and intense, challenging battles. For more information on this version, as well as the 1998 original and its eventual sequels on the GameBoy Advance and DS, check out GameSpot's coverage on the franchise.

Why are people (not necessarily from this article) so surprised that Square Enix would charge $15.99 for this game? Apparently not many people have noticed that the iPhone port of Final Fantasy III (the DS remake) has been the same price since it's release in March... I love a lot of iPhone games but that's a ridiculous price for a game you could get on DS (or Tactics on PSP) for not much more..

@leeko_link Half Life and Portal happen in the same world...they are still not sequels. The FFTA series has a really different tone that FFT(I provably don't have to explain you that right? lol). There are no other creatures beside humans(and monsters) on the magical lands of Ivalice in FFT...whereas in FFTA the characters live in a 'normal' world and are transported by a book to an imaginary world full of different races. The gameplay is also very different...but I also don't think I need to go into detail here...cause if you know the games you know about that. Although I like the FFTA games on its own way...I must say they are a shame compared to what FFT is. A lot was lost from FFT to FFTA. There is no true sequel to FFT. Although I would like to see a FFT2 (not necessarily continuing the story of FFT though)

@ rocka_ If they took place in Ivalice then of course they're likely sequels. The problem is each games in the Ivalice world had its own confusing title that's all, Final Fantasy XII, Vagrant Story, FFT, FFT-A1, FFT-A2, and even Revenant Wings. The GBA and DS games are what links the Ivalice World from Tactics (non-moogle world) to the Ivalice World in Final Fantasy XII (the fantasy world).

Please don't mention the GBA and DS FFTA titles as sequels.

@Chaos_Sanjuro Well, since it'll probably be directly on a memory card, it likely won't be slow because it doesn't have to constantly read the data from the disk. I'm more hoping that they can fix some of the odd sound issues like the lightning.

It always seems like a challenge to me when a core game has to be ported over to a touch-screen only device, but regardless of that I'm happy at least some of these older games are finding their way to the App Store. They help fill a gaping void in the list of core games on iOS. Besides, RPG's somehow seem more suited to a device you carry around with you practically all the time. I hardly get time these days to sit for hours on a game in front of my PC or even PS3, but the iPod is perfect for this as I can whip it out whenever/wherever I have time, finish a couple of quests and get right back to whatever it is I need to do. I want more of these. Many more.

Why are you being so down on the price? To me, £10 is reasonable. FFIII was more or less £10, and that was a great game. Cheaper than the DS version, anyhow, and graphically better, as well. Not to mention, trying to find the original on disc is sure to be a challenge, even for the most hardy of fans. This is one of the closer options, bizarrely. So really, there is no solid argument against the price. It's acceptable in my eyes.

If they fix the HORRIBLE slowdown issues the PSP version had, this won't be so bad. But if it doesn't... what a rip.

@darkbuster_exe This is for people who don't have a PSP. If they have a PSone maybe they want to play it when they are out and about. I'm not into mobile gaming myself that much because well when I'm out I'm busy. I'm not going to go to my friends house and just play games thats pointless. Going to the doctors office or things like that it would be useful but I hardly ever go to any place like that.

All in all, sounds like a ripoff to me. I'm pretty sure the PSP disc is much cheaper, both the original & update are on PSN for less than that, & you could always look for a PS1 disc if you really want to save some cash.

I think I will just stick to emulating FF tactics. Now FF7 on the other hand... That I would pay for.

@Tripwolf If you have played the FF's you would know that 7 isn't the best. It is just the one the revolutionized the genre. You must have never played FF4,5,6,9, or my personal favorite 10. KH1&2. the star oceans etc. Although I do agree that Squaresoft made far better games then SE.

FFT and FFVII are the best things Squaresoft ever did. Then they became SE and are garbage.

If they speed up the gameplay and/or fix the slowdown issues from WotL, I may have to consider this...if it's also ported to Android.
