Square Enix role-playing game Final Fantasy IV is now available on iOS. The game launched today in the iTunes store for $16 with compatibility for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.

Final Fantasy IV originally launched in 1991 and has since been ported to a range of platforms, including a 2008 polygonal remake for the Nintendo DS. It was the first title to include the franchise's now-familiar Active Time Battle system. Also, this latest version features voice acting.

The iOS version of Final Fantasy IV sports a few system-specific features and alterations including support for Game Center, which allows users to earn achievements and track progress against friends. The game's difficulty level has also been adjusted for "improved playability," Square Enix said.

Final Fantasy IV is not the only franchise entry Square Enix has brought to iOS recently. The company last week launched Theatrhythm Final Fantasy as a free download in iTunes with ten $1-3 expansion packs available.

$16 bucks for a 21 year old game that most people already own for approximately 37 different console and portable systems already? I'm probably going to pass. One of my favorite RPGs of all time, but I only need so many copies.

This game is not exactly the same as the people played 21 years ago. It has 3d graphics and voice acting in some scenes.

It same as DS version, but it is rendered at higher resolution (which make the game look less pixelated)

Here is comparison between DS and Iphone version of FFIII

The trailer mentions that FFV is in the works. They better keep going, I'd love to see VI on my iPad.

@Darnasian @Adeth @baystatethrashr Ya never understood why that one didn't get more attention. V is a GREAT game. I'd put it on the same level as 4/6 IMO. What it lacks in a strong story it makes up for with the most diverse battle system of the 3 SNES era games.

There's been more FFIV re-releases than all the other FF games combined.

Unfortunately, square enix games always come to iOS first

I'm pretty sure it will be out on Android sometime next year

For one of the higher quality RPGs of it's gen, no. On a non-mobile portable platform such a quality remake/port would of sold for $40-$50 so if anything it's on the cheap side.

I for one am happy that SE is pricing their items reasonably though it's still on the low side. If more mobile developers consider the fact that they can not only make quality games but also price them at reasonable prices for their quality perhaps we can see Iphone games not only grow in quality and length but also get rid of the one thing that makes the good developers money, in app purchases basically paying to win.

@nedrith SE games are hand down some of the most expensive gaming apps in the mobile sphere. I wouldn't call a rerelease of a 20 some odd year game cheap at 16 bucks. All they did is upscale the DS remake in HD. It's not really that special and most of the work was already done for them. 16 bucks is steep when you could probably get any of the other 6-8 rereleases for less then that a pawn shop.

FFIII is the best game I even play on my galaxy S3

I have no problem paying $16 for a good game that offers over 25 hours of gameplay

I can't wait for FFIV to come out on android

@Kracka2205 Not at all. People have just gotten spoiled by the race to the bottom on iOS. Crappy games can be $1, but good games need to be more.

@Kracka2205 Yeah, but that really speaks more to how skewed the pricing in the iOS market is right now. I'm kind of glad that SE is sticking to their guns. If more devs/publishers could do this, then maybe we'd see more than shovelware and F2P games on the store.
