Final Fantasy IV hits iOS for $16

Square Enix brings role-playing game to iTunes with compatibility for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.

Square Enix role-playing game Final Fantasy IV is now available on iOS. The game launched today in the iTunes store for $16 with compatibility for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.

No Caption Provided

Final Fantasy IV originally launched in 1991 and has since been ported to a range of platforms, including a 2008 polygonal remake for the Nintendo DS. It was the first title to include the franchise's now-familiar Active Time Battle system. Also, this latest version features voice acting.

The iOS version of Final Fantasy IV sports a few system-specific features and alterations including support for Game Center, which allows users to earn achievements and track progress against friends. The game's difficulty level has also been adjusted for "improved playability," Square Enix said.

Final Fantasy IV is not the only franchise entry Square Enix has brought to iOS recently. The company last week launched Theatrhythm Final Fantasy as a free download in iTunes with ten $1-3 expansion packs available.

I like how Square Enix STILL TO THIS DAY doesn't seem to comprehend the concept of competitive pricing...

Because I just love being asked to pay between 4 and 16 times (sometimes up to 20 and 30 times) as much as every other game for that same platform! It's somehow MORE fun when things are expensive!

@Jedilink109 Final Fantasy is a classic if you want it you will get it. What is Final Fantasy in competition with Angry Birds?

@megakick @Jedilink109 True, but at this point there's no reason to price it this high. SE has released the game so many times that anything they make on it now is pure profit. Besides, it's available for pretty much every other platform under the sun (and in physical form, no less).

Hey Square Enix, instead of re-releasing all of the older (better) FF games on iOS and portable systems, how about either (A) Do a remake of FF VI or VII on current-gen consoles or (B) Why not just take the old (better) formula (great story, simpler, easier to use controls and battle systems, airships, towns, more open / less linear world, etc) that made the older games so great, but with the graphics of FF XIII?

Seems like such a no-brainer to so many people except for Square Enix I guess...

@RPG_Fan_I_Am I didn't say developing such a game would be "so easy". I meant that Square Enix should actually listen to their fans and make the Final Fantasy game we want, instead of the game they want us to want.

Think about it. All the time and resources that went into making 3 FF XIII games. I would've gladly taken just one, but with more traditional FF features like I mentioned above. Combine those with XIII's graphics and most long time FF fans would be happy.

@redskinStu Square Enix tends to over-price their games. Not the first time they've done this.

How many times are they going to re-release FFIV? If they're going to keep re-releasing their old games, why not FF6?

@King9999 This.Final Fantasy IV is great; despite the fact that it suffers from never being able to permanently kill off any characters, it's still one of my favorites in the series. However, it pales in comparison to VI. I'd love to see a re-release, regardless of the platform it's on.

the truth hurts. what it is you ask? first and foremost, those milking practices that square is so fond of has ended up in betrayal of its fans. chrono trigger's remake was cancelled when square threatened the devs with lawsuits so she could milk the exact same old game over and over again. so the same goes with FF4. secondly, a mobile device is not a handheld gaming console. playing games is just a minor function. i can't see anyone popping the iphone out in the bus to play final fantasy anytime soon. the controls are not adequate either.

@PETERAKO Somehow, even when the touchscreen controls aren't an issue, games are just less fun when played on a mobile device.

@PETERAKO applications are just a minor function of all these current smart phones? Also have you actually played any of their iOS titles? The way the controls work are just as good as any handheld, and that's no overstatement (excluding Secret of Mana, still playable but it's just not as good)

I have the FF Anthology (PS1) and the FF Chronicles (PS1). Why would I need this? I also have some of these for my DS as well. The price is way to high. You could probably get this on PSN for $10 or less if you really wanted it. FF IV in Japan was FF II here in the states.

$16 for a game you'll play for well over 20-25 hours is more than reasonable. Jesus Christ.

It was FF IV (FF2 US) that got me hooked into RPG's heavily in my gaming youth. Because of FFIV I am not afraid to admit that I was (still am) a SE fanboy. Too bad Apple gets first crack in gaming releases... I own a Galaxy SII and a Tab 2 10.1.

Wow, what is up with that price?!

I wouldn't want to play that with touch controls anyways, but I still have my SNES, PSOne, and GBA copies to keep me company. I've bought this game enough.

@IAMTYLERDURDEN @rabih55555 @SolidTy There's also an analog stick you can buy that just attaches to the screen if you're playing a game where you need tactile feedback. It's called the Fling. Just type in ipad fling. you'll find it. They have an iphone one too.

I don't work for the company or anything, but I recently got one and it works on several games. Not all games unfortunately.

Agreed.

If it were for Android and $10, maybe. But my GBA cart with my DS Lite will do just fine.

Both on a closed platform (igadgets) and at a ridiculous price...Square-Enix has truly fallen off.

Well, I still got my old GBA cart and my DS Lite.

@nate1222 @SolidTy Ya I hated the PS1 version. Had awful load times compared to any other version. Those already sometimes tedious random battles are made unbearable when it takes bloody 5-10 seconds to get in and out of every damn battle in the game.
