Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of the Final Fantasy series, will be receiving a lifetime achievement award at the 15th Annual Game Developers Choice Awards. The awards ceremony will take place on the evening of March 4 at the Moscone Convention Center during the 2015 Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco.

No Caption Provided

Sakaguchi was the director of planning and development at Square Company, Ltd. (now Square Enix) where he created Final Fantasy, a role-playing game that would go on to spawn numerous sequels, spinoffs, films, and television series. The game was named Final Fantasy in reference to his plan to leave the industry if the project was not successful, and with the intention of being the studio's final project before it went bankrupt. Final Fantasy went on to be a success, establishing a legacy that has carried on until today.

"Final Fantasy helped pave the way for game stories that dealt with death, regret and character development in a mature and significant way, and we’re proud to honor Sakaguchi-san as a true leader in the space, and an inspired game developer," GDC events general manager Meggan Scavio said.

Sakaguchi went on to found development house Mistwalker in 2004. There he assisted with the creation of Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, The Last Story and Terra Battle.

This year's Choice Awards will be hosted by Double Fine Productions founder Tim Schafer. GameSpot will be hosting the awards' live stream on site, so be sure to tune in for live coverage on March 4.

Congrats to him. He deserves it. And Final Fantasy has been a shadow of its former self since he left Square.

Glad to know more people understand that the quality of the FF titles in terms of overall cohesiveness in storytelling, gameplay and pacing after Sakaguchi's absence pale in comparison overall to when he was still with Squaresoft back then.

Nice. Let's face it most of the people who've mangled the franchise to some degree since won't be getting the same down the line. This man has given me hours of RPG goodness and is truly deserving. I just wish more people had played Lost Odyssey. Needs a redo and a sequel.

At least someone deserving the award is getting it. Congrats. It's such a shame that MS didn't market and see that another Lost Odyssey would be great for RPG gamers. I would've liked to see where the story was headed beyond the mirrors.

@gajbutler: nah X, X-2, 11, 13 were great, but 13 had alot of bad elements too, but wasnt nearly as bad a s 12 or XV or XIV

9 however is the best ever.

What, did Sakaguchi die? But seriously, well deserved award, FF is still to this day my favorite game series ever no matter how much Square-Enix is trying to change that. Hopefully we'll see something new from Mistwalker other than that mobile game, which granted looks fun but it's still a damn mobile game.

will never understand why people never mention blue dragon. sure the name might suck but the game far from does. it made the previous jrpg enchant arm by from software (known as enchanted arms in north america) look like an xbox original. also, yes that is the same from software of demon's souls, dark souls, and bloodborne fame. back to blue dragon, it was a great collaboration between sakaguchi and akira toriyama (of dragonball and dragon quest/warrior fame). it fondly reminded me of past dragon warrior games i used to play on my nes. it was mr sakaguchi's way of showing that he didnt care that people didnt like old school style rpgs and that there was still room for them back during its prime and it did. this is just my opinion so all you flamers can go cry somewhere else but i thought lost odyssey was mediocre at best. i thought the 1000 years of dreams stories in the game were actually better than the game itself. also, lost odyssey hasnt aged gracefully as i play it again every now and then along with blue dragon. at least blue dragon has an excuse for its cutesy art style since it was a design choice but lost odyssey's visual style looks extremely dated in almost every aspect by today's standards. before you ask, yes im one of those that thought final fantasy vi (aka iii) was better than final fantasy vii, if you take into consideration how good the games were at the times of their release.

Very interesting, never knew that, which makes sense since I'm not a big fan I never bothered to look up where the name came from :). Still I respect it as a major franchise in gaming history and I am looking forward to XV. I wonder if some real Final Fantasy fans will reply to this comment and tell me why XV isn't a true Final Fantasy game :).

<< LINK REMOVED >> One of the most common answers would probably be, that ever since 13 they've been focusing on graphics over anything even remotely interesting story and gameplay wise. Oh, and they're making the main FF games action focused.

He deserves it. A shame what the company became when he was forced out solely because of ONE mistake with the Spirits Within. One failure can make a lifetime of successes null and void in the business world unfortunately.

There's a typo at the end "...Double Find Productions founder Tim Schafer" - Should be double fine*

Also, Sakaguchi has certainly earned it!

That's very nice and all but it's really sad to see him wasting away his talents creating mobile phone/tablet games. I'd love to see more epic JRPG masterpieces from him again.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Crusader of Centy is also one a lot of people forget. I grew up on Sega Genesis, but i admit i missed out on a bunch of classics from Super Nintendo and 64. I rode Sega all the way until Dreamcast died. Then i jumped to Gamecube then PS2. Quality from Sega was just awesome, i dont regret it. Gamecube turned me into a big Nintendo fan.
