Now Playing: Final Fantasy 7 Remake Xbox One Release Date Was A Mistake - GS News Update

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is confirmed to launch on March 3, 2020 for PlayStation 4, but is an Xbox One version also coming? Despite what you may have seen, it seems that it's not. Following an erroneous posting, Square Enix has reiterated it's only planned for launch on PS4.

The Xbox Germany Facebook page recently posted a video that stated that the Final Fantasy VII Remake would release on Xbox One on March 3 alongside the PS4 edition. However, Xbox Germany's marketing communications and social lead Maxi Graff confirmed that it was only a mistake.

The related materials with the March 3 date were removed right away, and Graff apologized for the mistake. Graff went on to say that the team will work to make sure this kind of slip-up doesn't happen again.

Following this mistake, Square Enix issued a statement saying, "As previously announced, Final Fantasy VII Remake will be released for the PlayStation 4 on March 3 2020. We have no plans for other platforms."

The Final Fantasy VII Remake is coming in March, which is a little while before the next-generation of consoles are believed to release in Holiday 2020. According to Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda, the Final Fantasy VII Remake is being designed to play on current- and next-generation hardware.

"I believe it is being developed so that it is going to be playable on both, so I'm not really concerned about that and I believe that the fans are also going to be able to enjoy it on both, including the next-generation of consoles."

Square Enix's E3 2019 press conference brought a fresh look at the Final Fantasy VII Remake, with an extended trailer as well as an extended gameplay and combat demonstration. Square Enix also revealed the game will span two Blu-ray discs when it launches on PS4, and the publisher will offer an extravagant $330 collector's edition through its online store. The highly anticipated game will finally launch worldwide on March 3, 2020.

Unless I see "Only on Playstation" or "PS4 Console Exclusive" anywhere in the marketing I'd say it's certainly only a timed exclusive

Avatar image for valtair

It will come to xbox, either the one or scarlett. Timed exclusive, square enix loses money if they don't release it on some xbox.

As if for even one second they aren't gonna check that box to build for Xbox in the Unreal Editor and make a bunch more money...

Of course it was a mistake. SE is under NDA, what else are they supposed to say?

Kinda like how they had "no plans" to release Nier: Automata on Xbox One? They just can't announce it until timed exclusivity ends.

@GinsuVictim:

You're correct, it will absolutely end up on an Xbox family console after the timed exclusivity at some point in the future. Nearly all major releases that aren't from in house studios will end up on the two mainstream consoles, they just might have timed exclusivity for a period. True exclusives from third party develops really only exists for niche titles, not major releases.

That said, as others have pointed out, given the episodic nature of the planned remake, I know I'll be more than willing to wait until it has some kind of final collection, which will likely also be multi console platform + PC. That's assuming the ambitious plans pan out, and it doesn't end up like the Half Life "episodes." There's no rush to play this one, in any case.

When the game was announced the previous year at E3. The video said "First on PS4", implying that it would be a timed exclusive to other platforms. I was actually able to pre-order it from Walmart on Xbox, but this was later cancelled a few months after.I say we will

see it at some point on Xbox. I can wait. I have enough games to play right now.

@Terminator95: Or... You can step up and be a true gamer, and own all consoles like me.(Nintendo, Xbox, Playstation, and PC) That way, I get the best of all worlds!

@Terminator95: wow. I don't know what is worse. How sad you sound or the fact that your commenting on a story from so long ago. Final Fantasy Vii will surely come to Xbox at some point. As for other games. Guess what I have all of the third party games you're playing on your system of choice. Get over it.

I guarantee that once the game is released in its entirety (i.e. all the Episodes are out) FF7R will be ported to everything else as a "Complete Edition". Square Enix ports all of their games eventually, and when they do, they tend to port them to every platform they possibly can because it's typically easy to do and begets a substantial profit.

So yeah, don't worry, Xbox Fans. The game will assuredly come to Xbox Scarlett (or whatever the latest Xbox Console is called) once the final Episode has been out for awhile. Same goes for those of you on PC and possibly Nintendo as well. The PS4 Fanboys can brag about how they got the privilege to pay $60 for each Episode right up until you get the option to pay $60 for the entire series of Episodes. Until then, enjoy one of the many other Final Fantasy games that has been ported six ways to Sunday or branch out by checking out some of their other RPGs like Dragon Quest, Mana, or the SaGa series.

@Blk_Mage_Ctype: You act like Square won't charge the new consoles a premium for it anyway. FF12 costs like 50 bucks on xbox one.

No frigging way they aren't going to gouche xbox and switch owners as much as they can.

Which is why buying this game at all is stupid. You are paying square to delay games and charge you for what should be included. And since this will probably sell a billion copies, just watch them try that business model for their next game. njoy Final fantasy XVI episode 1-7 at 50 bucks each.

@Blk_Mage_Ctype: Your theory about Scarlett/Next Gen consoles as a "complete edition" is plausible.... but never switch or PC. It's a lot harder to port games to a complicated/unique infrastructure these days.

@Xristophoros: Let them have this. This is the last year sony fanboys will be able to crow about exclusives. When XGS gets even bigger and starts churning out high end exclusives like clockwork, they won't be able to use that any more. After that the only thing the playstation ecosystem will have over xbox is a plethora of waifu games. And sony's trying to censor those.

So let them have this one thing, for pity's sake.

Avatar image for aross2004

@uberDave: Exclusives and good exclusives are two different things.

Avatar image for Xristophoros

@uberDave: the majority of microsoft exclusives are medicore at best. i don't expect that to change, with or without more studios under its belt. the culture and talent just isn't there. even a "great" microsoft exclusive pales in comparison to what sony has put out so as a gamer, you need to decide how much value the xbox brand gives you. the censorship at sony is truly hyperbolic... sure, some trash pedo-perve games have been censsored, but most "healthy" people do not even know those games exist, let alone would they ever have a desire to play that trash. if sony feels like there is a need for curation to clean up the stink, i am fine with that. the devil may cry 5 censorship (which has since been reverted back) is mind boggling, i will admit that. there is no excuse to censor a butt crack in what is a very respectable game like dmc 5. there is nothing in that game that was demeaning or even remotely gross or pandering to perves like the breast-fondling japanese games in question. in other words, less than 1% of the playstation ecosystem is upset about the censorship so the games in question only affect 1% of the population. those people can be ignored entirely and it would not make a lick of difference to sony's bottom line. in fact, the playstation ecosystem would be better off without those folks.

@uberDave: Meh, who cares about exclusives? It's well documented that the adoption rate for most exclusive games is pretty low. When Bloodborne came out the Xbox bashing was epic. 6 months later they released the sales results and less than 0.5% of PS owners actually played the game. Console fanboys love to shove exclusives in each others faces but the vocal ones who lay it on thick rarely actually buy the game so I've no idea why they even care? Bragging rights is for kids. I buy maybe 1 or 2 exclusives for each console in an entire year. If that. I think Horizon Zero Dawn, Bloodborne, the Last of Us Remastered and the Nathan Drake collection are the only exclusives I own for PS4 that are still exclusive. For Xbox One, I think I've bought Halo 5, Gears 4, Quantum Break, Rare Replay and Sunset Overdrive. Plus a few indies on both consoles and a few I'm probably forgetting. The rest are no longer exclusive. That's not a lot for an entire cycle of two consoles spread over a family of 5 gamers and I bet that's still more than the average.

Avatar image for PrpleTrtleBuBum
PrpleTrtleBuBum

@bdrtfm: well most all games have that lousy adoption rate barring some sports and a couple of shooters. almost all other games are niche that maybe 20 percent of console owners buy. for some reason certain fans just want to treat it as if the console brand is their racing horse stable or something.

i mean i absolutely loved psx and x0, but i played at all like 5% of the games released on them at best. now im a pc guy and ive played like 0,1% of the games. sure its nice to think that i have a billion games to choose from but in the end my time, tastes and money make most of it obsolete

It will come to Xbox sooner or later.

There is already FF VII on Xbox( original port) and remakes of FF9,10,10-2 and XII. FF VIII is gona be remade too. Not to mention the ports of Romancing Saga. So SE is bringing their Rpgs to Xbox.

This here sounds like a timed exclusivity deal between Sony and SE

@shadowwarrior4: How do you know Microsoft hates jrpgs? The guy mentions the word "Exclusive" in his apology. That normally means someone made a deal to keep it off of other systems. The origianl was never on Xbox either so.... I read nothing anywhere that says Microsoft doesn't want the game on Xbox. Maybe Sony paid for a timed exclusive and won't let Squenix say so. Who knows? JRPG's just don't sell well on Xbox. Or at least they haven't in the past. That's not Microsoft's fault. They can't make people buy a game.

Well one thing, a few years back it was being talked being possibly released on Xbox one as well as PS4, because it showed the Xbox logo at the end of tech trailer right next to PlayStation logo. That was showed here in America as well. But secondly, and most importantly, why isn't it coming to Xbox One owners as well? They just released/releasing FF7, FF8, FF9, FFX & FFX-2, and FF XII on Xbox One, while FF XIV was released on both platform, so why is the only FInal Fantasy to get a Remake going to be ONLY for PS4? This exclusivity stuff is retarded, an anyone who says it makes more money doesn't really know economics that well. It's safe, not lucrative. I say this both ways, not just PlayStation, I think Xbox having exclusives is pointless as well, all games should be available on all current systems when games are released. A game franchise Pandering to a company like say PlayStation or Xbox for a quick pay for exclusive rights is like a bar that only sells to straight people but not gays, or a bill that takes checks or credit cards but you can't pay with actual cash in hand (there actually are some places like this, some literally ONLY take credit cards), it's stupid. Profit is profit. Obviously a person can use examples like " what if the profit comes from drugs, or something else of an illegal or immoral nature," but then they're just picking at words used, not the point in which I'm making. I think it would be Awesome to see Gears of War on PlayStation and God of War on Xbox, why? Because everyone should be able to enjoy the same games. Hell, I'd love to have access to playing Nintendo games on my PS4 or my Xbox since I have no interest in their device, but do miss their games, like the Zelda series. All I'm saying

Avatar image for Atzenkiller

I wonder how a "mistake" like this could possibly happen. Seems like they just put it on their to get people's hopes up, hoping that they'll then start demanding SE to release the game for Xbox as well, and SE to eventually cave in. Can't really think of any other explanation.

Avatar image for Barighm
Barighm

@Atzenkiller: The only other thing I can think of is that the game is actually designed for the PS4 Pro and One X. Both demand games available for the lower grade of consoles, but Sony caved while MS refused. That or MS plans on using the game as a way to push their new digital platforms, or Squeenix sees a PC release as being more than enough for non-Playstation owners.

Every time I hear final fantasy the memories come crashing down again and those long loading screens that would take over a minute. At times at had time to go outside and buy a pizza and comeback and the game was still in a loading screen. Great PlayStation memories

Avatar image for Barighm

@angrycreep: There has never been an FF game that did that. Your PS1 must have been borked, or you're thinking of a more recent FF (I don't remember how long FF13 or 15 took to load).

Avatar image for angrycreep

@Barighm: Are you series? You wrong and yes there was games for the original PS that would do that. Final Fantasy for PS1 the one with the I believe 3 or 4 disc would take a minute or nearly one to load some areas? There was nothing wrong with my PS1 every game would load perfectly fine it was just those games that would take a million years to load an area.

@angrycreep: Sounds like your PSX's disc drive was fucked. I don't remember any FF games having long loading times. Not longer than was usual for the console gens after it, and certainly not as long as they've been this gen.
