Final Fantasy 16 Revealed At PS5 Showcase Event

Final Fantasy XVI, a new entry in Square Enix's storied RPG series, is coming to PlayStation 5 as a console exclusive.

Sony kicked off this week's PS5 Showcase event in a huge way by unveiling Final Fantasy XVI, the next mainline installment in Square Enix's storied JRPG franchise. The reveal trailer showcased the game's fantasy elements and combat, and it looks like it'll be a next-gen only title.

You play as a bodyguard to Joshua, the son of the Archduke of the region the game is set in. There seems to be some sort of blight taking hold of the land around you, bringing with it all sorts of dangers. Combat was shown off, with many nods to both Final Fantasy XV and the more recent Final Fantasy VII Remake, which released on PS4 earlier this year.

The "fantasy" in this particular Final Fantasy looks like it's inspired by something akin to Game of Thrones, meaning that it looks quite different from past games in the series. Some fans have also noted similarities to Square's PlayStation 1-era RPG, Vagrant Story. There's also quite a bit of one-on-one combat in the trailer--it remains to be seen what FF XVI's party system will look like.

You can watch the trailer above. Square Enix notes that it's captured on PC hardware, but has been designed to emulate the PS5 experience.

Square Enix shared some additional details about Final Fantasy XVI in a PlayStation Blog post. The game is being directed by Hiroshi Takai, who previously worked on Romancing SaGa and The Last Remnant, while Final Fantasy XIV director Naoki Yoshida will serve as XVI's producer.

This marks the first new mainline installment in the series since the aforementioned Final Fantasy XV, which originally launched back in 2016, but the series has seen many releases in the interim. Final Fantasy VII Remake launched on PS4 earlier this year, and follow-up games are in the works.

The series' MMO entry, Final Fantasy XIV, has also received an ongoing stream of content. Its big Shadowbringers expansion launched back in July 2019, and since then it has received numerous updates, the most recent of which--patch 5.3--arrived last month.

No release date for Final Fantasy XVI was shared, but the game is slated to release in 2021. Sony announced that the game will be a console exclusive on PS5, suggesting that it will not be coming to Xbox Series X or Series S.

That certainly wasn't the only news to come out of the PS5 Showcase. You can catch up on all the biggest announcements and reveals in our PS5 event recap. For more information on purchasing the console, refer to our PS5 preorder guide.

It looked like shit tbh.. but if the FF14 guy is involved, why not give the benefit of the doubt? I never played FF14, but people praise the dude so much, he basically built a new game from scratch, etc.. That's remarkable, even if the MMO basically lost it's relevance and the market is wide open, so FF14 ends up as one of the only "triple A" (many, many quotations) options... But still, why not, let's see what the guy can do. I fully embrace a new generation of talent because Nomura and his team of clowns are just distasteful and antiquated. What they did with FF7 was insulting. All that "fabula cristalis" bullshit, the kingdom hearts nonsense, etc.. this belongs in the past, Square needs to move forward and focus on new talent. The Dragon Quest team remains as strong as ever, so it makes sense to keep supporting them. Now the Final Fantasy team? The Nomura generation? They suck

These Witcher comparisons are confusing to me. The only thing this seems to have in common with The Witcher is the Medieval fantasy setting. Other than that I see nothing in common with The Witcher. If anything it looks like Final Devil May Cry Fantasy. It's sad that Final Fantasy is straying further and further from its roots and is now just a run of the mil series that puts out action RPG's. FFXV was trash, FFVII Remake was hot trash and this looks to be more of the same. Trash.

FF15 is dog****.

VII Remake is some fanservice hack of a game.

This game at least demonstrates some mature writing and strong story telling elements. Without all the weeb ****

Im a PC graphics whore, and this game looks about right for a next gen RPG.

@emmanuelguerrero: It doesn't matter if the story tries to be "matured" with character designs like these. The spiky hairs, androgynous soldiers riding giant chickens, etc.. It's hard to separate FF from the anime/weeb crap. Also the over the top combat, characters teleporting, jumping 12 feet in the air, skinny humanoids wielding giant weapons, etc.. I doubt FF can ever get rid of the anime bullshit. So why not fully embrace it, like FF7 did? It looks ridiculous and childish, but there's a niche who loves this kind of crap. To get stuck between "realism" and weeaboos, that's not the ideal situation

@gleencross: Yeah... no thanks plenty of those Jrps games. I'll take my attempt at a serious story and good writing.

To summarize; half weeb is better than full blown in my opinion. If the writing is good enough, I may be able to look over the rest of the over the top stuff.

That is PS5 game? It reminds me of a failed FFXI original, looks like a PS3 game... Comparing to FFXV and FFVII remake, this is just awful.

So yet another action RPG, and yet another game where it's mostly nothing but dudes...For god's sake, I don't want another FF XV! What happened to the mix of real time and turn based combat the series used to have!? What happened to the mixed parties!? What happened to STRATEGY!? Ugh, this franchise has really gone down the drain...

@TeslaCoi1: Exactly. Looking at the success of the Persona series, why not FF provides a competition for it? Instead, they want to be action oriented. Hell, they will compete with Witcher 3, Cyberpunk, From Software, etc.. imo this is a more difficulty situation, it's easier to just clash with Persona. Do you, be japanese, accept and be proud of your origins. But maybe that's for the best, because the guy who directed the revived Persona trilogy (3, 4 and 5), he is right now developing a high fantasy RPG. So, you can expect the HUGE quality differences between a fantasy RPG made by the Persona team compared to what Square ever did.

@gleencross: I'm glad the likes of Xenoblade Chronicles and Persona games exist. I'm not sure I can ever get back into this franchise if this is the path they're determined to stick to...

While I enjoyed FF15, I don't know if I am all that thrilled with this one. This one seems to be going much heavier into the medieval theme, with much less technology. That really doesn't interest me much these days. I can only play those kinds of games so much, and most of that time is already reserved.

Still looking forward to playing FF7 remake on PC though.

I hope that FF17 doesn't lean so heavy into the medieval aspect, and brings the blend of modern/future technology back into it.

That said if FF16 does turn out to look more interesting as it develops, or releases as a fantastic game... I would be willing to give it a go.

@Lach0121: The charm of FF is the mixing of concepts, still high fantasy but with a bunch of stuff mixed in. Just the fact this game features crazy creatures and magic, that's already a mix between high fantasy and medieval if you think about it. Maybe it's not enough, you want more technology?

From what I can tell they're probably doing a plot that's equal parts Game of Thrones, The Witcher, and The Dark Crystal.

I guess turn based Final Fantasy is never coming back? Kingdom Hearts was a nice change of pace, but XV was pretty much KH combat, VII Remake classic mode was slightly less mobile, and XVI isn't looking much different.

It is nice to see a return to a more traditional, medieval fantasy aesthetic though. Even though they're still leaning in on realistic design, not much different than XIV. While Nomura's designs are great, I think the last time they actually broke from futuristic/realistic was Final Fantasy IX. They were even hesitant to take risks like that then, I don't think we'll ever see a fantasy like IX ever again, which is a shame.

@lionheartssj1: Most likely, they abandoned the turn-based concept. At least Atlus perfected the system with Persona 5, then you have Divinity 2 doing a great job with the "tactics" side of things, etc.. And considering the people behind the FF series have no talent whatsoever, it's actually a positive for them to stay away from turns. Why tarnish this style even more? Let the real talent take over.

RIGHT??? What a lazy pathetic 'magic' system. I hated it and it ruined my desire to keep playing for me.

@misterginger: To me, FFXV is a game that was almost good. So much of it had so much potential to be great, but it just wasn't.

It was like SE got 80% of the way through making a good open world game, and then rather than finish it properly, they painted it Final Fantasy colors instead.

It still boggles my mind that SE managed to spend 10 years on the game and still managed to leave it feeling so incredibly rushed and incomplete.

@dancingcactus: I could legit do without any teen romance BS in any game, ever. I could also do without all the cringe unskippable dialogue. I miss FF1 where the king says "Go save us from this evil" and you just go do it, and quest dialogue wasn't someone giving you their entire life story as they are dressed in skimpy cleavage tank tops and jean shorts, or shirtless guys in leather jackets for some reason with chains and metal links and belt buckles randomly placed all over their other clothes in weird places.

@soulcrusher777: We still have the Megami Tensei franchise, Dragon Quest remains solid, the director of Persona 3, 4 and 5.. he is developing a high fantasy RPG for a while now (this game will blew peoples minds, I am sure of it). So, if FF died, so be it. We just have to let it go and embrace new stuff.

@metalhead367: A lot has happened since the days of XV man. Square Enix and Sony both have their eye on the PC market explicitly now, and don't see it as mutual competition. The xbox is still their direct competitor however. I don't believe xbox will be getting a lot of these games going forward, starting with FF7R. That's what I'm seeing anyway, correct me if I'm wrong.

@clockworkengine: FF7R is only timed exclusive, it was announced for PC and Xbox all the way back in 2015 and launches in April 2021. FF16 is also obviously timed exclusive, the Sony trailer only mentions PC but the Sqaure Enix trailer specifically states coming to multiple platforms at a later date which they later tried to take back and are now saying that they can't confirm if its coming to PC or Xbox and yet their own official trailer still states it is.

@ahpuck: It's a new team it seems, it's not the Nomura generation. That alone is a great positive sign, Nomura and his clowns are not involved at all, it's the FF14 people. So, I think they will deliver a decent game, but not a good FF game considering the devil may cry bullshit. That's better than the absolute trash we had in recent years, remember that "fabula cristalis" bullshit? The franchise is being plagued by it ever since the FF13 days, finally they are moving forward.

@gleencross: I liked FF XIII. It was a lot better than XV imo. It was linear and the combat was kind of stale, yes, but it had a good story, good setting, good characters, and proper magic. None of which XV has imo. The all-guy party in leather jackets thing, no proper magic, and a fully real time, action oriented gameplay was seriously off putting for me in that one. I don't think XIII's combat is good, but I don't think XV's is any good either. Xenoblade Chronicles' system is the way to go.

@alastor529: Final Fantasy games are not like other games.

Square Enix lets Nomura throw all the deadlines out the window and lets him do pretty much whatever he wants.

Imagine 3D Realms developing DNF, but never running out of money.

Looks good so far. The only thing that concerns me is in all of the gameplay scenes, it looks like you fight on your own. Where's the rest of the team? Hopefully, it's just because they're early in development.

This looks great and I like what I see with the more traditional setting and style , but at the same time I DONT want Final Fantasy 15 part 2. I just wanna move away from that combat system and anything related to that game. I want a brand new fresh Final Fantasy that mostly takes a whole new experimental approach , and even If this fails I can always still respect them being brave and really trying radically different approaches. I'm not gonna lie though I would love turn based back In a mainstream FF one day.
