Now Playing: Final Fantasy XV - Assassin's Festival Trailer

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

The August update for Final Fantasy XV is now live. In addition to the usual assortment of bug fixes, the version 1.4 update adds a couple of new features to the game, most notably the recently announced Assassin's Creed crossover event.

This month's patch marks the start of the Assassin's Festival, a limited-time in-game event that introduces new mini-games, items, and "gameplay elements" based on Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed series. Among the items players can acquire during the festival are Medjay's Assassin's Robes; all four members of the party can wear them to resemble Assassins. Noctis can also get Master Assassin's Robes from the Dream Egg, which can be obtained from the Moogle Chocobo Carnival going on until the end of September.

Beyond the Assassin's Festival, the update also adds chapter select and bestiary functions to the game. The former is available after players complete the main quest, while the latter can be accessed from the game's main menu.

The Assassin's Festival runs until January 31, 2018. Square Enix hasn't announced if the event will return in the future or if PC players will have a chance to take part in it when Final Fantasy XV launches on computers early next year. You can find the full patch notes for today's update, taken from the Final Fantasy XV subreddit, below:

Despite the fact I don't give half a f*ck to Assassin's Creed, FFXV's main world seems comprehensive enough to afford the medieval setting. And the sneak attacks made me think of how a thief class would work in the game's battle system. Episode Gladio and Prompto weren't enough to make me go back for a new game + round, but I think this just did it.

What is the point of this limited time crap? Either put something in the game or don't but don't restrict when someone can play it.

it looks good but why going to such length to promote the AC series? it doesn't make sens. following the AC origins, gamers should have bought the full previous series by now just to catch up with the story.

People are still playing this? I platted it a month after it came out and never looked back.

Has it gotten better nowadays? Felt like I played half a game...

@Xristophoros: eh, Final Fantasy was better as an old-school rpg than it is as a reality-warping zombie

s-e thought it was higher priority to implement assed creed antics into an already disappointing game rather than polish up the what was already there -- which by the way was clearly incomplete, even after all the patches? hmm, nice use of resources there. how much were they paid by ubisoft for this schlock? just when we thought ff xv couldn't get any worse, this is thrown at us -- something nobody wanted -- no to mention the pocket edition of the game which has the ugliest art direction i have ever seen lol... how can anyone take this franchise seriously anymore? the ff xiii series, while having many flaws, is actually superior to ff xv in many ways -- i never thought i would say it but it's true. at least ff xiii provided a decent story and characters and very enjoyable battle system. sure, there is no sense of exploration for the bulk of the game, but that can be forgiven since the core mechanics worked well. the same cannot be said for ff xv which has a lackluster and un-intuitive battle system married by extremely poor storytelling and near non existent characters. let's not get into how uninspired the world setting is and how much of a chore it is traversing in the regalia. if you thought the ff series lost its way after x, you are greatly mistaken. ff xii is a godsend compared to xv. of all the games i have played in the series, i would rank xv at the very distant bottom.

at any rate, i know there are people who will defend this assed creed nonsense being in a ff game, so have fun guys! :D

@Xristophoros: eh i can take it seriously, it is true that square is just trying to get as much money as they can but the dev team behind 15 cares a lot about their game as you can see in the patch notes there have been plenty of additions to the base game in the past year and thats all i care about, as long as bs advertising doesnt interfere with that im happy.

Not in this case. The thing is free. Too bad it must have a time cap probably due to advertising policies.

@danku_chan: it is not entirely the fault of the developers -- they must have been pressured to get the game out as soon as possible due to the tremendous amount resources the project was taking up (due to a misguided and troubled development cycle) . i understand the business side of things. that said, the patches they put out after launch have not done much to improve the package in my opinion. those who pre-ordered the game got burned and many stopped playing after a few hours out of boredom and disappointment. i mean, the game starts with hardly any introduction whatsoever. it is a deeply flawed game no matter how one looks at it. if you are new to the series and don't have a measuring stick to base the quality on, i can see how you would get enjoyment out of it. i have not seen many long-time final fantasy fans praising xv though. on the contrary, all i see are feelings of disappointment all around.

@Xristophoros: You see, I'm one of those long time fans, dating from the SNES days, and I think it is quite a fun game, flawed as it is. Probably shallow combat and points A to B usually being too far away, making you either drive a long time or load constantly are the things I have to complain. That and the fact that the world is not really all connected seamlessly. And kinda empty... Ok, there are more than a few problems, but they are somewhat minor considering that despite shallow, combat is fun and flashy. Plot-wise, the game presented a new, twisted storytelling. I mean, it all sort of clicks in the final moments and you then realize there is a huge untold backstory. Unlike Gamespot's backwards review says, the cast is quite likable too. There are more sidequests than you care to partake. No matter what, the game looks good, a criteria Final Fantasy used to be the benchmark in the past. But more importantly, the overall setting feels like Final Fantasy, something that has been missing for quite a while.

After FFIX, I didn't actually have fun playing the kind of FF that emerged from the PS2 era on. But this is from a different breed and this direction has a lot of potential for the JRPG genre in general. I honestly think it has been mastered in its first attempt, with Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii, but it will be good to see what S-E and more horsepower can do with it after FFXV.

Anyway, sorry about my long rant, I was waiting for something to install and felt like taking it off my chest.
